Ramshackle was quiet, every window dark, as the male watched from across the street. He waited, letting the silence of the night sink into his skin, feeling the weight of the sleeping world around him. A shiver of anticipation pulsed through him. Inside, they had no idea he was coming.
When he finally moved, he did so with purpose, slipping across the yard, his steps soundless on the damp grass. The shadows wrapped around him as he reached the back door. He tested the handle—a soft twist, but it held. Locked, as expected. He pulled a small pick from his pocket that ge had gotten for this moment, slipping it into the lock. His fingers moved with eerie precision, and soon he heard the soft, yielding click. He paused, letting the thrill wash over him before he stepped inside.
The house embraced him in silence, a thick, suffocating stillness that made his pulse throb in his ears. He stood in the kitchen, letting his eyes adjust to the dark. The faint hum of the refrigerator was the only sound, a reminder of the stillness that blanketed every room, every sleeping body.
As he moved deeper into the house, he made no sound, his every step a practiced whisper against the hardwood floor, his gloved fingers brushed along the counter as he passed, leaving no trace. He knew the layout of houses like this one, the way they were built, the familiar turn of the hallway leading toward the stairs. He’d been inside before.
Above, he heard a faint shift, the sound of a body turning in bed, springs groaning under the weight. He froze, his heartbeat thrumming faster. He imagined you, lying vulnerable and exposed, not a hint of suspicion in your drowsy minds. The thought sent a chill up his spine, and he moved again, drawn toward the stairs.
Each step was slow, deliberate, his weight easing down with practiced caution. The wood held firm under him until he reached the sixth step—an accidental creak slipped out, shattering the silence. He stopped, frozen, heart pounding. Above him, he heard the sound of you stirring, a sleepy murmur as they drifted toward consciousness.
A your figure appeared at the top of the stairs, silhouetted by a faint glow from a nightlight down the hall. He pressed himself against the wall, sinking into the shadows, his breathing shallow and controlled. The figure hesitated, their head tilting as though sensing something wrong, something just beyond the edge of perception.
For a split second, he imagined you might descend, that they might find him standing there, inches from the bottom step, hidden in darkness. He slid his hand into his pocket, fingers brushing over cold steel. But you only rubbed your eyes, muttering drowsily, and turned, padding back into the shadows of their room. The door clicked shut, sealing him once again in silence.
Relief washed over him, but it only heightened his resolve. He continued up the stairs, each step bringing him closer to the sleeping forms that lay within. Your sleeping form. The hallway was narrow, doors lining the walls on either side. He moved past the first room, hearing faint breathing inside, a deep, steady rhythm. The sound seeped into him, that slow rise and fall, lulling, vulnerable.
He stopped outside the second door, his hand hovering just above the handle. His fingers tightened around it, feeling the faint coolness of the metal. He pressed down gently, easing the door open a crack, just enough to let his gaze slip inside.
A bed lay against the far wall, a figure bundled under blankets, only a head visible above the covers. You looked peaceful, your breaths soft and steady, so blissfully unaware of the dark presence looming at their door. His fingers twitched, itching to step inside, to close the distance between them, to reach out—
You stirred, their head shifting on the pillow, brow furrowing in a faint, dream-laden frown. He froze, a chill racing down his spine as he watched them shift, your eyelids fluttering, the hint of wakefulness creeping in. He held his breath, every nerve alive, watching as your eyes opened just a sliver, unfocused, hazy with sleep.
You blinked, scanning the darkness, and for one terrible moment, he thought you’d seen him, that you’d lock eyes with him and shatter the fragile barrier between predator and prey. But their gaze drifted, still lost in the fog of sleep, and they settled back, drifting down once more into a deep, unsuspecting slumber.
He released his grip on the door, pulling it closed with excruciating slowness, not daring to make a sound. He backed away, every sense on high alert, feeling the pulse of the house, the muffled whispers of its occupants, his presence woven seamlessly into the night.
As he slipped down the stairs, he allowed himself a single, twisted smile. You hadn’t woken tonight. You hadn’t seen him, hadn’t sensed the danger looming just beyond your sight. But you would.
Stepping out into the night, he cast a final glance at the old worn down dorm that was now your home, his eyes glinting with a dark promise. He would be back, and next time, he would come closer.
