VQ s13 update

I have fully decided to put the VQ in the s13, it is even in the same location as the hatch so Im pretty stoked about the swap. I am still in parts gathering mode and have almost everything to get in into the s13.

Motor Mounts: The only mount kit that I could find that services VQ swaps in 240s was mad by mckinney and was a whopping 800$ for some pieces of metal (its mounts not rocket science) SO followers i did what i never said i would do and bought an EBay knockoff kit. Heres the selling point it looks (from preliminary mock ups) that it fits fine not sure how the motor will actually sit yet (ill keep you updated) and it was $300. So yeah McKinney love you guys but sorry I'm on one hell of a budget. The only problem that i can tell you for sure that the ebay mount kit has is a trans mount that looks like it was measured by a blind guy who slapped it together like close enough. It is for sure a few inches crooked. idk why laziness. incompetence. ebay. but i digress. It will have to be cut and welded to come close to fitting. Also both mounts were solid so I plan to modify the trans mount using an sr mount. pics and description to follow. it will be ghetto.

New Year New Things

Update! I got an 89 240 shell for Christmas! Its a complete car lacking an engine and driveshaft. I am so excited to finally have a car I can use to learn to drift on. This has created a huge problem in what I should do with the VQ and the shell. As much as I love the idea of having a clean VQ s14 as my daily, it may make more sense to put the VQ in the s13. For some reason the VQ clears the firewall better in the 13 than the 14 and I also give not a single fuck about cutting the firewall in the 13 but I would never cut the 14. ever. So I have some thinking to do but all I can say is that Im going to have a pretty awesome setup come summer! Pics to follow!

Motor mounts and update

After more research there is quite a few issues with the fitment of the VQ in the engine bay. The motor sits nearly flush to the firewall leaving no room for the upper part of the plenum (which comes off of the back of the motor because fuck me right). So options are cutting the firewall or searching for an aftermarket plenum that has the exit for the intake coming off of the front similar to the LS motors. The only issue with this is that the only aftermarket plenum i could find is nearly 3gs and is much higher than the original which will make for hood clearance issues. I would cut the firewall before i cut a hole in my hood as i want the car to be somewhat street legal and my daily for the summer. I have more work to do on this I am not sold all the way on one option or the other...

On another note motor mounts seem to be limited to McKinney mounts which, after some research, i found that the trans mount had to be modified to fit anyway. So, going against all my instincts, have decided to order an ebay knockoff (i know i know) for about 1/3 of the price and modify that version instead.

Motor is on the floor cleaned it a little bit this weekend gotta give it the once over before it goes into the car probably in a few weeks. Choosing motor mounts is the next step then labeling and pulling the KA

VQ Swap

Yesterday I picked up a 2004 VQ35DE from and awesome dude in Maryland. let the project begin. As soon as I pull the 240 off the road the work begins. My main concerns at this point

wiring (going to be a headache)

the speedometer (runs off the sending unit in the trans of a KA but the diff of a VQ so I have some thinking to do)

the rear diff (running a stock 6 bolt non abs rear currently need something more aggressive and that will work to run the speedometer off of possibly a J30 rear)

motor mounts (how low/far back the VQ needs to sit as well as how stiff I want to run)

This is what it looks like now (summer 2013) with all the body work done, brand new front end, rear end fixed, new exhaust, rolled fenders, and new wheels/tires.

I tried to make it as stock as possible then fixed all the damage from being rear ended and from my dad hitting a deer

This is what the beast used to look like (keep in mind it was early 2000s and that shit was in) It had an intake and the rest was bone stock aside from these hideous zillion pound rims.

my 240 love story

Let me just kick this off by saying that I am in no way shape or form an expert on any of this. That being said I believe that if the passion and drive is present, anything can be accomplished.

A little history...

I have owned my 1998 Nissan 240sx for about a year now after purchasing it from my father who had daily driven it, beat it up a bit, and loved the living shit out of it. I remember as a kid riding in the back seat of the "little car" and "drifting" around corners (he would pull the e-brake and my brother and I would laugh our asses off). This was my first experience with the iconic Japanese sports car that would later rule my life. Fast forward to a 16 year old kid who just got her license and very nervously learned to drive stick on the 240. Its soft stock clutch was patient with my rookie shifting skills and I immediately fell in love with everything about this car. For the next 4 years I begged and pleaded with my father to sell me his 240. He would let me borrow it and take it to school but take it back whenever he saw fit. Finally he sees a 40th anniversary 370Z and the rest is history. He has a new toy to play with and I have my great white buffalo.
