big fan of grace being treated like some kind of mood ring for eva. not only based on how he behaves but also by straight-up asking him if it's a good time to put in a new request for equipment or if she'll give you 100 HP psychic damage for knocking on her door.

grace is humming along as he carries three coffees in a cardboard tray and a brown bag with pastries? she's going to be in a great mood, better hurry to finish up that paperwork to give to her.

however if you show up for breakfast and grace is already sitting alone in a corner looking like he hasn't slept, avoid the entire hallway her office is in at all cost.

on the extremely rare occasions you see her waiting by the door as he gathers their breakfast you might even be able to get away with giving her not-good news. (one brave engineer once tried it, and she simply rolled her eyes and told him to fix it within the next twenty-four hours)

opposite of that is when they're walking together and grace sees someone approach and vehemently shakes his head and mouths 'go away'. if you have something that absolutely cannot wait, well, good luck. you'll need it.

it's not that she is cruel or needlessly yells, she simply has this commandeering tone of voice and steel in her eyes that makes you freeze up while in her office; the moment you're out, you'll probably start sobbing.

(there was one memorable occasion where grace carried a small table into the hallway and sat outside of her office all day while she was on conference calls. anyone who wanted to talk to her had to make do with him instead.

last person of the day swears high and low that eva opened the door in the middle of their conversation, saw grace practically barricading her office, and then smiled while saying "come in when you're done."

said person doubled their bet on them being caught together in the next week.

all they did was drink expensive liquor together while complaining about politicians and stupidly rich people. the fact that they both slept on the couch in her office that night means nothing except that they both got a bit more than sloshed. freak4freak secret third thing.)

To my fanfic writers out there who enjoy writing some trauma filled angst or hurt/comfort I have a fun fact for everyone that can be used a fuel to a fic where you wish to torture Simon. Depending on where you are in the world, there are different minerals in your water. This not only changes the taste of the water but also how it reacts with things around it. For those of you unfamiliar, there are places that have very iron-rich water. (Do you see where I'm going with this) Recently I visited one of these places and it's most obvious feature is it's staining the appliances it interacts with most frequently. And wouldn't you know that stain happens to be a particular shade of red. ALSO If you are in a place with very, very iron-rich water (like I was) it will taste and smell metallic. So much so to the point of coming out of the shower I was asked why I smell like blood from someone across the room...

As a non writer but frequently reading I am seeing potential in modern aus for sure but also for bloodymary shippers, Erid is a rock planet so if they aren't synthesizing the water it's gotta come from somewhere and maybe they are in a very iron heavy region.

So please my wonderful fanfic writers out there take this fun fact and run with it for all your traumatized characters

The importance of his doctorate in molecular biology aside, the way in which Ryland Grace approaches an alien life form with curiosity, compassion and kindness is indicative of his lived experience as a teacher in a middle school.

It is one thing to be able to teach effectively, and another to manage a variety of different individuals needs while maintaining engagement. Every skill that Grace uses in his meeting of Rocky, and building a relationship with him, whether he remembers or not, are skills a good educator and mentor uses.

To not assume ill intent. To approach first with curiosity. To explain difficult concepts in a palatable way without condescension or malice. To empathize with one's situation and acknowledge how it may shape one's responses. To exercise patience. To adapt and shift gears in the face of uncertainty. To remain calm in the height of stress and remain a leader.

Grace as a scientist yes, but as a teacher, maintaining an openness to not only work with Rocky, but to also embrace his differences and utilize his strengths to find creative solutions that benefit both of them.

History is fraught with disputes and wars driven by ignorance and sustained by fear of unique cultures and experiences that are different to our own. It is practically in our DNA to reject or fear that of which is different to us, and so it is not weak to trust or to be kind. It is harder to be these things, because the opposing forces come so effortlessly.

Grace's inclination toward 'flight' instead of 'fight' is not an indicator of weakness. It is preservation. It is learned behavior. To take a step back, recalibrate and approach again. You do not win students over by being a fearless dictator. You win them over by treating them like people, and acknowledging where you yourself have room for growth. Ryland Grace is a coward for many reasons that define his narrative, but being trusting and kind are not among them.

Humanity owes its salvation to Ryland Grace the middle school teacher.
