Driving home.
Remnants of the tin streamers life litter the streambed. Watercolours of fragments found in the stream.
Mad Michael
The wooded strip on the corner of Bridgemoor is dark and dank and is a thin parcel of land on the edge of the stream. For many years it was the home of Mad Michael. He had planted a neat grid of trees on the land and created a woody heaven under which he camped.
The remains of his camp can still be seen, a plastic tarp, tent poles, buckets and other odd items strewn beneath the trees. There is a bridge across the stream into the old oak sissel wood that runs up the valleyside to Nance farm.
On the other side of the stream are a few more discarded items; a folded up garden chair with cushions that have absorbed the rain and mizzle of the valley, a grey disintegrated bin bag that was full of old empty plastic drinks bottles tied up as though it might be left for the weekly recycling and another bag of unidentifiable rubbish. Strewn to the right of what looked like an area that was used as part of the camp is an old bottle dump. In amongst the piles of leaves and moss mounds are old bottles either peaking out or lying on top of the leaf litter. Here and there are old enamel pales and bowls that have succumb to the damp and have started to add rust to the composting of the woodland detritus.
I had begun to wonder whether Michael had been tin streaming from his camp by the stream. The buckets and bowls might suggest the collecting of water to slosh and sieve the gravel from the bottom of the stream in search of gold or other precious metals. But the link is tenuous, they could easily just have been used for washing and cooking. Was he following in the traditional occupation of the Bridgemoor Cottages or was he just a hermit wanting to camp out under the stars?

Been working in a new medium, cross-stitch, for Klaas Rommelaere’s contribution to the group exhibition In Your Hands, at the Newlyn Art Gallery in July. He asked us to send in object we loved from our home, and from the ones I sent he chose Ralph’s lovely teapot. So here is my finished textile piece.

And here you can see it in the exhibition.

Living in the woods.
What’s left by one man who lived in the woods. I wonder what happened to him?
Just found that my very short clip (barley fields at 10.56) was part of this project produced during the first lockdown in 2020, edited by Gemma Wearing .

The Barn Owl
We walked from Helston to Loe Bar on a grey and wet afternoon in late December. We set off mid-afternoon and by the time we reached the sea the sun was dimming, this coupled with the gathering rain clouds meant the light was quickly disappearing. By the time we reached the u-shaped path that curved over the river twilight had descended and we were soaked by the heavy downpour which had just passed over. We stopped at the café and Rob stood waiting for me as I went to see if it was still open. It had already closed for the night, but as I returned he motioned for me to be quiet. In front of us was the pale owl swooping across the mud brown water that had broken the banks of the stream. It flew towards the lake, where two herons were also looking for supper. The owl flew over the damp valley looking for food, a mouse maybe, or perhaps a frog sitting in the damp pools. The owl’s pale sandy wings made it stand out in the crepuscular light. It swooped along the bank of the pool and at times hovered over specific spots, we left it sat in a tree scanning the landscape for a possible meal. As we walked back several small brown things ran across the path in front of us and we could hear a tawny owl calling in the waterlogged willow carr to the right of the path. Mallards swam through the trunks of trees usually found on the banks of the Helford which were now emerging from the rising waters. I hoped to see an elusive otter in the eventide but was not so lucky, nevertheless the sight of the ghostly owl flying over the water was return enough for my damp feet, sodden gloves and running nose.
Dear Susannah, So it would appear that you weren’t the only one who had a private pool created for their bathing, and not the only Susanna for whom they were created. Were you all influenced by Dr …
