Dear Diary: learning the STARE
It took a lot of time and practice to perfect. Despite what I always tell my friends.
I started with very small animals. After what happened with Comforts, for a long time I went into a hermetic life. My parents could not pry me from my room and they forced me to talk to a counselor. But how could I tell them the truth? If she knew the truth I would go to jail and everypony would know I had done the unspeakable.
"Fluttershy, we all have secrets. You need to move past this! It's now interrupting everypony's lives, not just your own! Stop being selfish!"
That is what I remember my mother saying. Or yelling, more like it.
She might not have been yelling. Sometimes, when I am upset I hear things. I might have heard her yelling when she was simply talking.
In any case, it got to be too much.
I had to attend summer classes because I missed too many days of school. That was when I saw two birds in the clouds. The larger one was chasing the smaller one, flying in and hitting her repeatedly. It angered me and, maybe because it was not my own life, I let that anger out.

I don't want to describe it, Diary. I was needlessly cruel. The little bird I had rescued was even afraid of me. I had behaved more like a griffin than a pony. Again, there was a sense of being in a dream. Not myself. When I saw the look of horror on the little birds face, and the way she cowered and flew away from me, I ran home crying.
For a few hours I could not move. I curled up in bed and cried. By now my parents were used to such behavior so they did not bother to check on me. Only when I dragged myself to the bathroom and saw the mirror did I have confirmation that the incident actually happened.
