check in on your disabled "friends". Stop neglecting them because they don't have resources like a car, gas money, or money to pay for brunch or whatever you normally like to do with your friends. TALK TO THEM. ASK THEM HOW THEY ARE. OFFER TO HELP THEM. VISIT THEM. Make sure they have food to eat if they aren't lucky enough to receive SSI or SNAP. Make sure they have somewhere safe to stay.

I think the best way I've been able to communicate to people who have no idea what fatigue actually is actually like is this:

Your energy for the day is like a bag filled with marbles. And when you sleep, your bag gets refilled. Your bag isn't damaged, and so can be reliably refilled.

When you have chronic fatigue, your bag has a hole in it. When you sleep, the bag fills, but marbles keep falling out the bottom as it fills. So it takes longer to fill, and may not be full by the time you wake up. Trying to use too many marbles at once makes the hole bigger, and you may not be able to fix it. So your bag holds even less now, refills slower, and empties faster.

That's the difference. If a typical person without chronic fatigue overdoes it, maybe it just takes a few more days of rest to refill their bag. Maybe there's a little hole now, but you can fix that no problem.

But someone with chronic fatigue overdoes it? They risk permanently ripping a huge hole in that bag that they can't fix, or even destroying their bag altogether.

And there's no replacement bag.

crazy how being disabled can force you to literally give up parts of your identity. disability restricts your ability to build relationships, to have hobbies, to work, express yourself, etc. all these things help make up who you are as a person, and it’s so much harder to authentically experience them when you’re physically unable to
