Yáo, Olesya and Grace All Survive AU (But with a bittersweet sad twist - Yáo and Olesya still never make it to Erid)

And it's by design. They know that Grace didn't want to die. They saw it on his face during that meeting. They see it in his face as he struggles to gather his scrape his memories together. They know that he literally didn't sign up for it and yet he works SO HARD on it all - in spite of it all. So when they learn that Rocky has enough fuel to SEND THEM HOME they are so achingly aware that THERE ISN'T ENOUGH FOOD FOR 3 PEOPLE TO MAKE IT BACK. Grace doesn't have the heart to tell Rocky that the astrophage wasn't the only problem. That food is too. He doesn't have the heart so he hugs Rocky and thanks him anyway - because someone is fighting for their survival when they can't. Yáo, Olesya know they were going to die anyway. They had made peace with it a long long time ago. They knew were going to do the mission and then die - they knew it then, they know it now. They know that there wasn't enough food to make it home for three people... But for maybe for one? They knew Grace was smart - he'd figure it out. (Hell, they thing the could have done this whole mission practically by himself he's so smart!) So when they learn of the gifted fuel they start quietly rationing their food. They choose to end their own lives to give Grace a chance to live. To give him enough to make it back home. Imagine the complete and utter devastation when Grace discovers one day that his crewmates are just... gone. He had no idea. (They never wanted him to know - they kept it to themselves, doing everything they could to prepare him for the long trek home) They are just gone and all that is left of them are their last words are recorded audio messages, scribbled notes, letters tucked in corners, a video log or two. All left just for him - telling him to keep on fighting. To keep LIVING. That it's okay, this was always going to be the end for them - they had made peace with it. What they hadn't made peace with was the fact that Ryland grace would die too. They thank him for being pretty amazing company - for the lessons - for the friendship. They thank him for his bravery most of all. So just IMAGINE the overwhelming all-encompassing loss and grief when Grace realizes just what his friends did for him. In spite of everything - even in the wake of Grace remembering what a COWARD he was (and divulging this to them in a quiet moment of self-judgment) He's alone with his grief and guilt and so many others things and then - - and then the taumoeba get into the fuel lines - the xenonite failed - and Rocky is left adrift. And Grace chooses to turn around to save Rocky and then after he fights damnit - He fights to live. Grace fights for Himself, he fights for Rocky, he fights for the chance to see Erid. He fights to live long enough to see the light of Earth's star brighten.

Most of all he fights for Yáo and for Olesya - because of what they gave up so he could fight. Yáo and Olesya are laid to rest in space - Ryland unable to let them go until after he and Rocky reunite. (His best friend is by his side when he crumbles after letting them go into the vacuum of space) Along side the fallen Eridians there is a memorial for THEM TOO. And their names are sung into the history of Erid and its saviours - never to be forgotten. Ryland Grace gets to live in a place he calls home - and that's exactly what they sacrificed themselves for.

ANYWAY- There is a lot of potential for neat and yet DEVASTATING stories with this! ... En... Enjoy? (Sorry?) ... I made myself sad :( But it'd be so interesting tho - :(
