As I am reading the The impossible Knife of Memory I keep hearing tori Amos screaming in my ears. Perhaps one of my favorite albums, remember I am 40, but this song seems to scream out how Hayley feels......Angry and distrustful, and scared.....
I’ve been following the conversations about Finn’s approach and mindset with a great deal of interest. Author intention is only one piece of the puzzle. The weight of reader experience and interpretation is just as significant. My thoughts are mine alone and are in no way a validation or...
I agree as an adult who works with kids who can be angry or mistrustful I can totally see Hayley's POV. Additionally, her self survival skills she has always needed are extremely apparent in the seen with the stoners, she is tough but respectful so she can survive!

I agree and I have students lie all the time to protect their parents! Kids of parents with substance abuse problems or mental health issues have a gigantic need to protect them. You have to have a kid feel safe with you before you can help them. In my experience around here, none of our child neglect agencies would care about a 17 year old with an alcoholic dad, but caring teachers and counselor who listen, really listen can be a life saver…..nonjudgmental listening is different than just listening…..as well as being genuine, kids know genuine….also when they get to know me they tell me what teachers care about them and they are right almost 100%!of the time!
I hope by this part of the book, it’s clear that Hayley’s dad has a substance abuse problem, one that stems from untreated PTSD. And I also hope it’s pretty clear that Hayley has problems trusting authority, whether it’s her parent, a step-parent, or a school counselor. But...

I took this because I love trees but I was also in the middle of Speak and it just spoke to me.....quiet, alone, and a sad tree

I tried, I really did. But once I began disappearing into this book, so did my day. I couldn’t put it down. Finished it in one sitting and just HAD to do something.
"My earbuds were in, but I wasn’t playing music. I needed to hear the world but didn’t want the world to know I was listening."
~Laurie Halse Anderson; The Impossible Knife of Memory
I do this all the time to finish stuff!
