“I love snow!!” - Brooke

It honestly melted his heart to get to see this side of Brooke. It was almost child-like. It was nice. Toby laughed at the blonde’s antics. Her face lit up as she watched the snow come down. Its speed had doubled in the five minutes they’ve been watching it. 

They’d gotten together for one of their “business deals” and he actually was allowed into her house. Her dad was out of town for the weekend was the reason why, but he still considered it a win. He found it absolutely adorable that she couldn’t take her focus away from the scene happening outside the window. 

“You’re just a little bit cute, Miss. Maddox.” He put his index finger and thumb a little bit a part to show emphasis. He brings his body closer behind her to where there was little room between them. He wrapped his arms around her from the back. “Don’t worry though; your secret’s safe with me. He brought his mouth down to gently kiss her neck as a way to seal the deal.

“Seems like it. We just drink with their picture up at a bonfire.” Jace admitted with a shrug. Seemed to work, it’s how they celebrated the death of the Serpents who had passed on. “Um, probably not? I’m not really from this side of town. Although from the sounds of it, looks like I will be your new classmate soon.” He admitted with an amused smile. “Anyway, the name’s Jace.”

Toby nodded. His family hadn’t experienced a lot of loss, but the one death in his family, his grandpa, they had a very small funeral and then had a pot luck at his grandma’s house. If Toby were to die he knew he wouldn’t get this kind of treatment at all.

Toby’s eyebrow raised at the guy - Jace’s - statement. “You’re from the Southside? Don’t you guys have your own school?” Toby was confused. “I think I’m missing something.” He took a good look at the guy. He looked like a typical Serpent. Not the Toby minded them really. He had no opinion of them either way. “I’m Toby.” He finally introduced himself too.

Veronica liked to keep herself busy when tradegy struck, no matter what had happened, keeping busy was nice. So, she had decided that she would continue to keep Pop’s open as a place for people to come to, to eat, to talk and to just be with loved ones. Something that she wished she could do more often now, this even made her want to call her father. Which was a step up, considering their last conversation wasn’t really pleasant. 

She heard the door ding and as she looked up, she saw Toby and she couldn’t help but smile. Toby was a huge sweetheart and Veronica liked having him around. He could make her smile and laugh like no one else could. He was a keeper, that was for sure! 

“For you, handsome, anything.” She winked playfully at him. “I’m happy to see you. I was worried.”

Toby leaned over the bar closer to Veronica with a smile. “You were worried about me? And here I thought I was just another guy for you grind on once.” Toby didn’t know what to think about the Veronica Lodge choosing to dance with him the other night. He obviously enjoyed it. A lot. He was kind of a dumb ass though because he kind of just stood there and let her do it. He didn’t dare touch her because he didn’t know what was allowed and what wasn’t. And if Toby was anything he was respectful. 

“I’m kidding, obviously.” He commented after a few moments in his own thoughts. “I’m glad you’re okay too.” He was truly glad she was in one piece. “You looked nice as an angel.” Toby didn’t know her comfort with bringing up that night after what happened, but he figured she deserved to know that she looked beautiful.

“Okay I know what I want.” Toby said after thinking on it for a little while. ”And since you said anything it’s going to be a lot.” Toby took a breath. “I’ll take a famous Pop’s chocolate milkshake, a batch of fries, some chicken nuggets, and your phone number.”

Jace knew he technically shouldn’t be at the school but hearing about Jason’s death was unreal. Sure, he had heard of the guy, who didn’t know the Blossoms in Savannah? However, hearing about a death, no matter who it was or how old they were, it kind of stung him. He lost his mother and his father, he was an orphan and he didn’t have any biological family left, sadly. So, he understood how horrible it could be to lose people. “Oh, yeah. No problem.” Jace told the other, stuffing his hands in his pockets. “I think this is the thing rich people do..” He told him.

Toby chuckled at the other’s answer. “You’re probably right.” He wouldn’t be surprised if it was just a rich people thing to do. He dusted himself off and took in the other guy.

“I’m sorry but do I know you?” Toby asked in confusion. He didn’t recognize the guy, but then again he didn’t know everybody who went to Grove’s.

Sebastian was strolling through the hallways of Groves and headed to the athletic office. There were no doubts in his mind that some of his players were probably staying home due to the death of Jason Blossom, but he figured he would show up to get some work done without the students bombarding him. As he neared Jason’s locker, there were quite a few students leaving flowers, cards, and notes. Just as he was passing it by he noticed one of his players Toby Cavanaugh’s feet catch one of the gifts and was nearly about to take a spill. 

With a roll of his eyes, he immediately stepped in and helped steady the boy. “You’re welcome, Cavanaugh. You’re a lacrosse player, you need to be more steady on your feet. Clearly you aren’t doing enough balance exercises on your own time.” Sebastian stated simply as he eyed the other. 

Toby dusted himself off after Coach Smythe saved him from taking a dive onto the floor. Internally he was rolling his eyes because of course he’d make a comment about practicing more. But of course Toby wouldn’t say anything because the other guy was his coach, his superior. 

“You got it, Coach. Thanks again.” Toby commented. “What are you doing here so early?”

Just as promised, Brooke made her way over to Riverstreet to meet Toby Cavanaugh for his shopping spree. Death or no death, fashion was always something that was important to her, plus she needed to keep her end of the deal with him, so she reached out to Toby and told him to meet her in front of the fountain after school so she could help him pick out his clothes. She needed the distraction from all of it, and this was the perfect opportunity for that.

When she saw Toby approach, Brooke plastered a smirk on her face and began walking toward him. “Hello Cavanaugh…” She began. “I see you decided to show up for your end of the bargain, that’s a wise choice.” Brooke slipped her phone into her purse before turning back to him. “Now… You get to choose what we shop for first. Formal wear, every day wear? The world is your oyster.”

Toby’s day had been going good all things considered. He received another text message from Brooke in the middle of the day saying that today was the day she was fulfilling her end of their deal. That definitely brightened his day. He’d be lying if he said he wasn’t looking forward to it. 

After school Toby made his over to Riverstreet and turned to head to the fountain already finding the blonde in question there and waiting for him. “I hope I didn’t keep you waiting too long.” Toby commented. He didn’t have his own car so after school he walked to the nearest bus stop and had to take a connector to the mall. All in all public transit wasn’t the worst, but it wasn’t the worst, but it definitely wasn’t the best. 

“I don’t even know where to begin.” Toby admitted. “I guess everyday wear?” He rubbed the back of his neck in nerves.

Toby had been taking the week easy thus far. All of the teachers given the current situation had been very lenient with their assignments and expectations. So, it’d been relatively easy.  Toby only had a few people on his list that he made sure to check on and Miss. Veronica Lodge was the last of them.

He knew through sources that she was working tonight after school at Pop’s and he decided to stop by closer to closing time in hopes that it wouldn’t be that busy. He made his way up the steps and opened the front door with the welcome bell chiming. 

He was pretty much right. With only an hour and a half left until closing there were only a handful of people in Pop’s and it was only Veronica and the cook. He saw the black-haired girl turn his way when the bell rung. He smiled at her and approached the breakfast counter.

“What’s cookin’, good lookin’?” He asked with a goofy smirk.

Toby hadn’t really been close to Jason. He was more or less the king of the school and everybody knew him and loved him. Toby figured there wouldn’t be a lot of people at the school on Monday, but he was surprised at how many people had been at school to at least drop off flowers and gifts in Jason’s memory. He had headed to the guys’ locker room to drop off his lacrosse gear because there was practice scheduled for today. Whether or not they’d actually have it was up in the air.

He was coming out of the locker room when he tripped over one of the gifts left for Jason and almost ate hardwood, but luckily for him somebody caught his fall. “Thanks.” He said gratefully. “I think this is great and all, but why wouldn’t they just drop it off at the Blossom’s actual residence so the family could see the impact he had on the students of GHS?” Toby questioned good-heartedly.

Brooke made her way into the bar and browsed her surroundings. She’d never been to a gay bar, let alone one on the Southside. But of course, it piqued her curiosity, so she found herself there. Besides, free drinks, and a place to show off her costume? It was a win-win really. Brooke openly despised the Southside, but surely the gays there would have to know how to throw a party, and sure enough it seemed as if they did. 

Just as she made her way toward the counter, she heard someone say ‘hey you.’ She turned around to see the familiar boy standing behind her and a smirk played across her face. “We aren’t exactly on those terms just yet, but hello to you too officer Cavanaugh.” 

Toby had never expected to see Brooke actually on the Southside. Sure, they first met on the border between the two sides, but she hadn’t crossed it then and he didn’t actually think she would. He was pleasantly surprised to say the least.

“Nurse Maddox.” He tipped his fake hat. He couldn’t help but check the blonde’s assets out. He may know what was hidden beneath the skirt, but he had yet to have the honor of appreciating what was barely held behind tight, thin top. His eyes stopped there for a long moment.

“How’s your night been, Brooke?” He dropped their game with an eyebrow raise. He was truly interested in knowing what the Northside elite did prior to partying.

Veronica spotted Toby and thought she would make her way over to the guy, to say hello and to comment on his costume. She didn’t want to make the other uncomfortable but she did want him to know how she felt at least. “You look absolutely handsome, Toby. I love it.” She told him with a smile. “ I would say I’ve been bad to tease you but that wouldn’t be a very angelic thing of me to say.” Veronica teased, considering she was dressed like an angel.

Toby was grateful for the dim lighting because Veronica Lodge complimenting him definitely made him blush a little. It was no secret she was a very attractive girl and most guys’ fantasy. Outwardly he just smirked.

“You don’t half bad yourself, angel.” He laughed at her comment about nto being angelic. “I could also make a few dozen did it hurt when you fell from heaven jokes.” He shrugged. “And how has the party been treating you, Miss. Lodge?”

Whipping her head around at the call of her name, Aria smiled when she noticed Toby.  She hadn’t noticed him when she’d first arrived, but it was nice to always run into a friend. “Toby, hey.” She smiled up at him. She nodded then, glancing around at the people around the bar. “I didn’t think much of it since it’s Halloween,” Aria mused with a light shrug, folding her arms against her chest. “Honestly, there’re a lot of people here.”

Up until now, she hadn’t realized the amount of people they were actually letting in to the place. Turning to face, Toby, she just shook her head. “Whoever it was, they know practically everyone. Looks like the entire town is here.”

Toby shrugged at the girl’s observation. “Yeah, but who do you know that’s okay with both the Northside and Southside crowd? I don’t know of anybody off the top of my head.” Granted, Toby didn’t know a lot of people and interacted with even less, but still. There was the great divide for a reason and most people respected that. 

“Anyway, how have you been? How Mike?”

Toby hadn’t been at the party for very long until he ran into a friend. Aria. He had been at her house just the week prior. They had gotten a bit closer. He didn’t just consider her a friend of a friend now. They were friends. 

“Hey, Aria!” He addressed the short girl. “How’s it going? I’m guessing you go the invite too?” Toby didn’t expect to get an invite to anything Northsider set up so this had to be part of the Southside agenda, but for what Toby wasn’t sure. 

“Do you know who or what organized all of this?”

Toby loved the power and authority that he felt wearing the police uniform costume. So, he could definitely see how they could get off on the actual power they have with the gun, taser and engraved badge added on. It didn’t make him hate them any less, but still he could understand. 

Toby made his way into the party at Seventh Heaven. For a club located on the Southside there were a lot of Northsiders here than what Toby deemed the norm. He tried not to think too much of it, but he would keep an eye on the situation to prevent any escalations. Any time too many Northsiders and Southsiders mingled ended up being a shit situation. 

“Hey you.” He addressed the first person he knew in the club, trying to establish some sort of normalcy and not look like a total wallflower.

Veronica couldn’t help but smile at Toby when he mentioned that he didn’t have much going on. At the mention of the Wifi password and the free burger, she smiled at him before nodding. “For being so generous to walk me to work, it’s the least I could do. Might even throw in some fries and a shake if you are lucky.” Ronnie winked playfully at the other. As she fixed the bag on her shoulder, she looked over at him. “Is there anything you  need to grab before we head on out?”” She asked, glad that she would be having some company on her walk.  

Toby couldn’t help but smile back at the girl. He really had nothing to do tonight, so why not make sure a girl felt safe getting to and from work. “Wow you sure know how to treat a man.” He commented when she added in a milkshake and fries. 

“I am all good to go if you are.” He answered. He held the door open for her. “So, you closing the tonight?”

As they continued their path around the grocery store, Hanna reached for items more on autopilot as she focused on Toby. It was nice just doing something as simple as shopping with company. “Don’t worry, it’s nothing dodge or illegal. I just remember how you helped over the summer loading stock into my car….both Sweet Pea and I are busy with school as well as serpent duties, so really I was wondering if you wanted some afternoon into evening work sorting out the cellar, doing stock take, placing orders that sort of thing. I can give you $8.50 an hour, a dollar more for overtime. If you’re interested that is.” 

Toby contemplated the offer for a few moments as they continued on throughout the store. It was a dollar more than he was making at the 7/11. But he would be closer to actual Serpent shit. He’d be actually in the belly of the beast. He’d been working very diligently to stay as far away from the Serpents as possible. At the same time this was Hanna he’s talking to. He trusted Hanna.

“Okay. You got me. I’ll take it. Are we talking full time or part time?” He asked the blonde. He definitely wouldn’t be telling his mom that he took another position. He worked evenings at 7/11 anyway.
