Red had been doing the exact same thing he had been doing since the second he woke up: stare numbly at the television screen and think. Let his imagination run wild as his mind tore itself apart, beginning with the self image he had. Red had been proud of his body before, posting the occasional thirst trap onto Instagram and happily throwing his shirt off for a quick dip in the ocean. Now, the very thought of having to remove his thin patient’s smock sent a bolt of anxiety through him.

Ugly, that’s what his mind is saying. Red is scarred everywhere now and he can barely look at himself without flinching. How can he face anyone like this? How could he face Billy like this, no longer looking like the way he did before. Handsome, Red would call it. Handsome, beautiful, almost flawless. Now?

Red looked up at the sound of his door opening, eyes widening at the sight of Billy Flynt, taking him in and drinking every minute detail. He looked so aside from himself, wearing clothes that were wrinkled and the bags under his eyes looked designer. Still, it didn’t stop the swell of emotion in Red’s threat and he choked back a sob, tears streaming down his face again. Any worry he had for self image or the future disappeared without a trace. Red tracked the man until he sat down and finally closed his eyes, covering his mouth with his hands.

“Hi,” he managed out. “Hi. I never… I never thought I’d see you again.” Red openly sobbed once and tried to wipe his tears away, careful not to disturb the needles in his arms. Red was swamped with emotions at the moment and he reached out for Billy’s hand, holding it tightly and running a thumb along the back of it. He needed to make sure this was real, that he wouldn’t wake up to a cold cell and wish to God he had died. Red sniffled and brought Bill’s hand up for a kiss on a knuckle, tears still blurring his vision. “I missed you so much, you have no idea.”

Billy reached out with a free hand and wiped away at any stray tears, now openly crying and not knowing what to do about that. He was smiling, so grateful to see his boyfriend again. The world no longer felt like a simulation he watched from above, set in greyscale and muted. Everything wailed out in song. “I’m right here, don’t cry, I’m crying. I shouldn’t even be the one to tell you not to cry.” 

After the soft kiss on his hand, he gently pulled on Red’s, repeating his action and pressing his lips against the other man’s hand himself. He didn’t know how long they spent apart, after three days, he lost track of time and himself. Everything felt like a limbo, it was such a strange and foreign feeling, and nothing he could ever properly describe out loud. All he did know was that the sound was back. The colors were back. He was real again. Without Red in his life, there was no possible way to feel real. 

“I’m right here, I’m not going anywhere. It’s going to be alright, now.” He never wanted Red to leave ever again. Just the thought of this happening to them a second time, it hurt him to even think about it. Perhaps there was more Bill could have done in terms of keeping him safe. He certainly was going to start doing all those things, now. Maybe if Red came to live with him permanently, or maybe he could do well with an extra bodyguard or two to run along with him, they could find someone who could keep up... anything to stop this from happening a second, or third in Bill’s case, time.

Billy looked nothing like his usual self, but he supposed the same could be said for Red, so he didn’t feel too out of place when he walked in a different person. He stood outside the hospital room for an hour straight, long after Kenta had left. Twice he was stopped by a nurse to be asked if he was an escaped psych ward patient. He was too tired to be insulted by that and too on-edge to play the ‘don’t you know who I am?’ card. Mostly, he was shocked he looked that out of it. Maybe it was the uncombed hair, the tired bags under his eyes, and the loose fitting clothing that he might have spent at least a day and a half straight in. It was actually absolutely that and he regretted showing up such an obvious mess. When he got the call that Red was not only found, but alive, it was like all the sound returned to the world and he dropped everything and just... went. 

Reluctantly, he walked into the room, terrified of what he was about to see. He knew it wasn’t going to be easy on the eyes, seeing anyone you love in any sort of pain or trauma was going to be painful to look at. But as he slowly opened the door, rehearsing everything down to the first thing he was going to say to Red, he told himself that he needed to just focus on the relief. The positives. Red was alive, dear god, he was still alive. Billy could work with alive, no matter how messed up emotionally Red was, all Billy needed was a pulse and he had hopes that it was all going to be okay. 

He shuffled in, eyes glued to the ground. He forgot to buy flowers and felt like such an idiot for doing so, that he made a note to make sure Bertha filled the houses with flowers the day Red got discharged. Slowly he looked up and assessed the damages and any script he had prepared while pacing outside the room was gone. Thrown from his head and out the window, not a single bit of preparation could have helped him deal with the mixture of anguish and relief. Guilt and happiness. Sadness and excitement. For a man who prided himself on not often wearing his emotions on his sleeve, he was maybe feeling a bit too much right now. Tears sprung to his eyes even though he told himself he wasn’t going to fucking cry. He sat down at a chair by the side of Red’s bed and broke into a smile, those damned tears falling because of course his body just had to betray him in this moment. He couldn’t bring himself to care too much about the crying, though, he was too busy trying to sort through everything he felt in the moment. Right now, the emotions elicited a shaky, breathy laugh as he choked out one, single, “Hi... long time, no see.”

Bill spent most of his time completely frozen during this entire situation. He didn’t leave his house. All operations led by the Angels were suspended. He hardly left his desk most days. It was just him by the phone, waiting for calls. Waiting for money to wire over if needed. Waiting and waiting. It was a lot of taking himself out of the situation because he knew if he got too involved, he would only mess things up in the same way he messed it up for Lucy. How he handled her abduction caused her death. He wasn’t about to have another one die on him because of his meddling. 

So he provided funds when necessary and gave any and all control the Angel’s had in search and rescue over to Matthias. He didn’t even want to partake in destroying the men who did this. All he wanted was the nightmare to be over. It had him stuck in a place where time didn’t exist and sleep never came. Food was around, but he rarely ate it. Not unless Bertha sat across from him in the office he never left, staring him down until he picked up a fork. Even if he wanted to be out there with the rest of them, he was too exhausted, starving, and all-around useless to be of much help. If not for Bertha, maybe he’d be dead. He wouldn’t mind being dead. If Red was dead, then he ought to be. He didn’t know if Red was dead or not, he shouldn’t do that to himself, he shouldn’t. He shouldn’t. He... 

He picked up his phone and texted Matthias. 

Hey, any updates? What’s going on out there?

Billy didn’t quite know why he received this email. He actually had to laugh at it. As it began, he was fairly certain that one of those five people would be a high ranking Angel. One of his that he’d probably send Matthias to go fetch for him. Nothing he didn’t prepare his men for. As he sipped his coffee and watched, he snorted at the clear scare tactics in it, and the goofy Guy Fawkes mask. “Coward can’t even show his real face. What a joke.” He mumbled, rolling his eyes.

But around the time the video showed Wren, his rival leader, he stopped laughing. He blinked and leaned in, eyes narrowed. What was going on here… Why would they take Wren? Such a high profile abduction would be suicide for any smaller gang. Something twisted in his gut. A wave of anxiety came over him as he wondered just how personal this video was going to get. They sent this to him because he’s connected to one of the five. Obviously. Did they manage to snatch up Matthias??? Oh, he didn’t want to think about that, but who else? Who else would be important to Billy?

As Red’s face showed on the camera, his heart dropped into his stomach. A cold sweat broke out on the back of his neck. Tears formed without hesitation, every alarm bell in his head went off. Red being the one they took was so unthinkable, he didn’t even consider it. Just a few hours ago, Billy received a text from him. He was supposed to show up at the house tonight… Well, he clearly wasn’t now! As he watched the man get tased on camera and gasped and whispered out a pained “No!” He had to look away. He couldn’t handle it.

Seconds after the video ended, Billy was on his feet, walking out of his office and towards the door. He brushed right past Bertha as he croaked out, “I have to call an emergency meeting. Don’t wait up.” Bertha noticed his tears and tried to stop him to all what was wrong. It was the first time he ever yelled so angrily at the woman when he shrugged her off violently and said, “No! I need to go!”

Step one, get his two closest Angels on the job. The only thing on his mind as he got into a black porche and sped out of his driveway was he would not lose another one. Not again, never this again. Static memories of Lucy’s abduction and death invaded his mind, he spoke to his in-car assistant, hands gripping on for dear life to the steering wheel. “Call Matthias.”

Couples who went to the gym together, stayed together, right? Billy supposed it wasn’t even so much about the gym as it was doing things together. The more a couple did together, the stronger the bond. Billy was just shocked he had a boyfriend at all to do things with. He didn’t typically date men as much as women. It happened, sure, but rarely. And in the post-Lucy days, he slept with them and bailed. Red was a special case, as Billy had yet to do either of those things to him.

That was what happened when you saw a potential in someone. The patterns you kept before begin to break. Things begin to change. Billy noticed a lot of change.

“98… 99… 100. Good! Take a break!” Red helped Bill up from the bench press, offering him a water bottle and a towel. “I didn’t know you could bench press so much. 350 is pretty impressive!”

“I could do more than that.” Bill lied. He downed half the water and squeezed a little bit of it on his face, the cool liquid felt like sweet relief in the stifling gym. Working out in close proximity to other people was always a great way to start sweating. He wiped the towel roughly against his face and threw it back at Red suddenly with a smirk. The damp thing covered his face.

“Ew! Billy, why!” Red scrambled to get the sweaty towel off his face, tearing the thing off and throwing it back at Billy. “You play around too much. And that thing smells awful. We’ve only been working out for a couple hours, how did you manage that?”

“Oh, and I bet you smell like roses right now. I had to peel you off the treadmill. Strength and speed. What a pair we make.” Billy spun himself to one side of the bench press and got up with a groan. “Yep. Feeling all of this tomorrow and a little bit of it now.”

Red snorted, grabbing Billy’s hand and helping him up. “You’re pushing yourself too hard. You’re going to pull something. Slow down, Bill.”

“Telling me to slow down is a great way to get me to never stop going.” Billy pulled Red closer in by his hands. He pecked him on the cheek, and when Red seemed unsatisfied with that, he laughed and gave him a full-on kiss, his hands grabbing on to Red’s hips. The other patrons of the gym probably didn’t care too much for the PDA, so after a bit, Billy broke away. “Let’s hit the showers. You smell just as bad as me.”

“Yeah, well you look worse than I smell!” Red retorted with a giggle. He let go of Bill’s hands, leaning in and dropping his voice to a low whisper. “First one there wins!” and with that, he was off. And Billy knew he had no chance if he gave chase. So he lightly ran after Red with the intention of just taking the loss.

When he caught up, Red was waiting in the hallway to the locker room. Billy made eye contact with him and grinned, running over and pushing him towards a wall while their lips locked together. Red wrapped his arms around Billy’s neck, taken aback by the sudden passion behind the kiss. Billy moved his hands up and down the length of Red’s sides, laughing into the kiss as he kept Red against the wall. He growled into Red’s ear, lips curled into a smirk. “God, Cariño, you’re so perfect. Sometimes, I can’t believe you’re even mine.” he pressed three light kisses down Red’s jawline before kissing him some more. Those soft lips, he could kiss for hours.

Red let out a dreamy sigh, his hands sneaking up to comb through Billy’s hair. Each kiss he returned. Had he ever dated someone so happy to kiss him, before? As Billy began giving him gentle love bites on his neck, he decided that no. He never had anything like this before. He laughed as Billy began forming a small mark on his neck. “Bill, we need to shower.” He breathed out. “You still smell really bad.”

“So rude this one.” Billy mumbled before pulling away, grinning. “Jokes on you, I was just going to blow you in the shower.”

“You’re ridiculous.” Red pushed Billy off and grabbed his hand, walking into the locker room with him. Couples who work out together definitely stay together. Absolutely.

“I still don’t understand Spanish but I’m smart enough to know that means something like ‘son’ or whatever,” Matthias said and took a deep gulp of his beer. He sighed, satisfied now. He fiddled with the label on the beer, an emotion welling in his throat. Matthias tried his best to swallow it like he did with all of his other emotions but this one felt like a goose egg in his throat. He didn’t want to open his mouth unless it came tumbling out, something he’d never do. 

But he did anyway.

“Thank you by the way,” Matthias managed out. He wanted to say more but emotions weren’t easily articulated for him. Not like his friends who could actually say what was on their mind. Matthias shook his head and tried again. 

“You… I feel like you saved me. Like, if it hadn’t been for you, I wouldn’t feel this good about myself. You know?” Matthias asked and sighed. He sounded unbelievably ridiculous. This whole emotions thing was best left for chick flicks, it was better if he kept his mouth shut. The blonde tugged the maroon bandana out of his hair and ran a hand through it. Yup, definitely enough emotions for quite a while now. The man eventually stood up to throw his beer away and moved to his bedroom, coming back out with an acoustic guitar. He sat in the single seater next to Bill’s couch (it belonged to Bill now, his blood was on it) and began to tune it, plucking here and there. Eventually, he popped a cigarette in his mouth but didn’t light it, just needing something to nervously chew. He glanced at Bill with slight puppy dog eyes. 

“…Got any songs you want me to play?”

“Do I know anything that can be played on guitar is the real question. Welllll, you can definitely translate anything into a strum. Still, most of my music requires a quintet led by Frankie Valli.” How to sound old 101. Billy wasn’t even alive for most of the songs he loved. He was only just born in 1980. The 80s were considered old and any music he listened to was just about ancient according to most. and That did something to his heart. “...Can’t Take My Eyes Off Of You. I actually learned that once. Uh... in the key of C sharp. Google is your friend.” 

He waited for Matthias to begin playing, hand lazily over his chest, his eyes slid closed as he listened to the song. It felt cliche, how this song in particular held so much meaning to him. Everyone knew this song, you didn’t even have to know Frankie Valli to know this song. It was so common, so overdone, he had to smile when he began singing. Soft and sweet and not a thing like how he talked. “You’re just too good to be true, can’t take my eyes off of you. You’d be like Heaven to touch, I wanna hold you so much...” 

He had quite the smile on his face. This song was a memory. It gave him something warm.

Red grinned when Billy held him, just barely containing his happiness inside of him. This felt amazing to him, a night where he was completely loved as he was and Red hadn’t messed up a single thing tonight. He listened to Bill hum and a delightful shiver ran down his spine, Red biting his lower lip when he realized what it was. He’d felt it before, the first time he had been held by a boy he had liked in high school. Red refused to put a word to it, it was too soon but the feeling excited him. Was he feeling again, after all these years? God he was ready for happiness again and Red suspected Bill had the power to deliver him to a nirvana.

He decided to celebrate by turning his head up and catching Bill’s lips in a slow kiss. Red felt sparks ignite in his chest and he smiled into the kiss, pulling away slowly and tucked himself back underneath Billy’s chin, a small smile on his lips. Call him overeager, call him easy. Red preferred the word happy over all of them. The world could judge him when the sun rose back up in the sky but right now he felt like he was the king of the world. 

The Maybach stopped outside of Red’s complex and he thanked Chris, popping the door open on his own. His hand sought Bill’s and Red guided him back to the apartment, heart starting to pound against his chest when he remembered what he was about to do. Right, just as he had rehearsed it in his head before. Open the door with his keys, close the door, tell Bill to make himself at home, offer drinks, talk, go to sleep. 

Wait no, there was a step missing there. Red pulled out his keys and unlocked his door, stepping in and toeing off his shoes. “Make yourself at home. It’s not a penthouse but I like it a lot.” He smiled at Bill and closed the door behind him. The runner made sure to put a little bit more sway on his hips as he walked through the living room and into his kitchen. 

“I’ll be right back, I’m just going grab something for you,” Red said after he fiddled with the flowers he’d received. They were so beautiful, it only renewed his determination to make this amazing. Red looked over at Bill and gave him a bright smile, disappearing through the open doorway in the kitchen. He more or less ran into his room and tossed his clothes off, leaving him in an unbuttoned dress shirt and boxer briefs that went over the elegant white stripes against his skin. Red adjusted some of the straps before going for the shirt, letting out a nervous sigh. He quietly walked out of his room as quiet as mouse and leaned against the open doorway leading to his living room, eyes glued to the floor. 

Red cleared his throat and slowly lifted his gaze to meet Bill’s eyes. “… Would you like to unwrap your present now?” 

Billy liked the apartment. It was cozy, it had four walls and a roof. Billy would loved to put Red in something even nicer. Something higher up in the sky. He wandered around the living room while waiting for Red’s present. Looking around, he was reminded of his more humble beginnings in the city. Just beginning his double life of getting through law school by peddling drugs for Ramsey way back in the day. He lived in a place like this. All these apartments were kind of built the same, walking around it felt familiar. 

He fell back onto the couch, waiting for Red’s return. When he heard Red’s voice from the corner of the room, he looked up from his phone and blinked. He had red in his cheeks, his eyes traveled up and down Red’s body as a grin spread over his face. Oh, wow. What a present. He straightened up in his seat, gripping onto the arm rest and laughing lowly. “Oh, Red...” It was all he could manage to say. 

The straps hugged Red’s body in a flattering way, the shirt left on and unbuttoned was a great touch. Already Billy wanted it off of him. He looked hot. There was no denying it, this was really hot. But something in the back of his mind told him to cool down a little bit. Something that wanted that to be a little more special than a first date. As much as he would love to jump right into things, if they were actually attempting to date, Billy felt like he needed to prove himself worthy of this. He stood up, walking over and grabbing Red by the hands with a smile. “This was very nice, cariño, but I’m not sure if we should tonight. I’d want that to mean something with you. We’re a bit too early into this, it’s the first date, why rush? I wanna get to know you first.” 

He pressed a kiss against Red’s lips. “You’re very good looking, it’s tempting... but can I save my present for another date?” Another kiss to his neck as Billy broke away to nip playfully at Red’s neck. “I promise I’ll make it worth your while. Eres bello. No puedo quitar mis ojos de ti.” eyes half-lidded, he peppered kisses down Red’s chest and collarbone. Then he looked up, smile on his face. 

“I don’t plan on leaving you completely high and dry, though. There is something I can do for you...”

Matthias, in the middle of scrubbing a stain from Bill’s sleeve, barked out a laugh at the question and had to step away from the water to avoid splashing it everywhere. He stood up and grabbed a towel from a rack, patting his arms dry. The blonde took one look at Billy before walking back into the bathroom for his phone. He took a quick picture and immediately texted it to Red, swallowing another loud laugh as he did so. 

“Genetics. My dad was a tall fucker and my mom wasn’t bad either so I grew up into this basketball player height. The only person I met that was taller than me was that bi… lady, Roxy.” Matthias sneered at her name and shook his head. “There’s stuff to eat if you get the munchies, but I’m just gonna wash your suit.” He tossed the towel aside and went back into the bathroom. Matthias sighed and pushed the bandanna so his hair was fully out of his face. The man got down to his knees and began to clean.

Twenty minutes later he emerged with his shirt soaked and a satisfied look on his face, taking the discarded towel and patting himself dry again. He walked to the kitchen and took the wine bottle, setting it inside the fridge before pulling out a nice beer. Matthias popped the cap off with his teeth and took a swig of it, looking at Billy for a second. He took the bottle over to the couch and sat on the floor once again, slowly nursing his beer. After a lapse of silence, he set the bottle aside and looked at Bill.

“Do you remember when we met?” he asked quietly. “I was still working as a bouncer for that boujee club and you came in once.” Matthias fondly smiled at the memory, it was probably one of his most cherished ones. It marked the day he stopped trying to impress any motherfucker and finally took the reins of the chariot in his own hands. He looked back at Bill and found himself actually respecting the man. Not in the low general respect he felt on a daily basis, but Matthias valued everything about him in the moment, from the childish way his fingers poked from a jacket too big for him to the deep look in his eyes. Billy had the eyes of a warrior and Matt only prayed he could wear that look like a crown one day. 

“I think I would want to murder less if I was taller. It’s a complex. Who likes being short? Roxy, who’s... oh! Scary girl! Tall! Matthias, I need to hire more women. Women are scarier than men and would benefit us all.” He dropped his hand over his eyes and groaned again, the thought of food alone was enough to churn his stomach. He shook his head, nose crinkled. “No. No food. no mas, mijo, let me sit here and try not to puke on the suit.”  

He sat in silence while Matthias cleaned, letting his thoughts wander. He thought of Red and felt a foreign tug at his chest. That warranted a smile, was that a bit of lust he detected? The need for Red to be here? The need for his scent while he cuddled up to Billy on the couch? Oh, that sounded like a dream. He though about his gang. He really did build that thing from the ground up. Because of him, his mother lived in comfort. That was what he told himself to fall asleep at night. He slowly moved his hand from his eyes and stared up at the ceiling. 

“Lucy would like what we are right now...” He whispered before Matthias came back out from the bathroom. He smiled. He thought fondly of Lucy. Yeah. She was a catch, wasn’t she? 

Matthias’s voice snapped himself out of his stupor, and he looked over at the young man. “I do remember that. You were...” He closed his eyes, just in grasp of the memory. “...I knew I needed you in my ranks. There was something about you. Potential. Like you could be like me one day. I gave you an opportunity much better than that fuckin’ club. That’s what you needed, mijo, a little opportunity. That’s all anyone needs to make it.”
