   To be fair, the last time Apphia had been in this forest, she’d been missing a soul and had died in just about every horrible way possible - the only reason she’d come back is to say hi to all the funky little ghost people around here, and to annoy-

The Snatcher.

“s’not up to you whether I visit or not, pool noodle.” She’s just. immediately in there with the hostility. She didn’t bring any blue paint, at least. “You look well. Still doing that stupid soul thing? Or have you finally found something worthwhile to do with your time?” … She’s still a little bitter about the soul thing. And the death wish thing.

“ 𝕻𝖔𝖔𝖑 𝖓𝖔𝖔𝖉𝖑𝖊?!”

     Ok, wow. Hat Kid certainly hadn’t changed one bit since they said their abrupt good-byes, and quite frankly the demon king of the forest was not going to have it. He pressed his balled up fists into his sides, leaning forward like the pool noodle he was in an attempt to appear menacing.

“ There you go insulting me again! Kid, you seriously need to work on your people skills!” He grimaced, mood turned sour, “ And I’ll have you know my soul stealing business is completely worthwhile! Not like I'm about to sit down and explain any of this complicated grown-up stuff to a pint-sized terror such as yourself.”

     The ghost flicked the end of his tail as his minions stilled, all of them turning their full attention on said pint-sized terror, “ Not so cocky anymore, now are we?”

     The Subcon Forest was a strange and eerie place full of mystery and magic, a place characterized by it’s strange combination of childlike fun and ghastly horror. Most of those who even dared attempt entry were turned away at the treeline, the sheer malevolent magic barring entry for most people. Rumors spread due to this, some stating there was a buried treasure hidden in the heart of the forest, or that a cruel spirit haunted the forest’s grounds, damning any poor fool who so braved it.

     Up on a hill an impossibly tall tree sat in a pool of crystal clear water, the structure towering past the canopy and into the heavens above. Large gnarled thorns bridged the way into what seemed like a quaint little living space located in a hollowed part of the tree. The forest was quiet, almost too quiet, so seeing proof of human occupation might have disturbed most.

     It had probably been close to half a year since Snatcher had last seen that space brat, so one could imagine the look of sheer shock on his face when he heard word of her return. The undead children of the forest had practically clamored over to Hat Kid, many of them bombarding her with questions on her travels, and what took her so long to return to the Subcon Forest. Snatcher, of course, made sure he was late to the party, as if he were trying to make a tsundere statement that he didn’t miss her that much.

“ Hey, kiddo! Long time no see! I was honestly hoping you decided to stay clear of this place, but I guess we can’t all get what we want, hm?”
