Dr. Augustus Nathaniel Lushington is believed to be the first Black person to earn a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree in the United States. Before he earned his DVM, Augustus went to teacher-training school in 1875 and worked at Trinidadian classrooms for several years and was promoted to the rank of principal. However, he left for Venezuela, where he worked as a clerk in the town of La Guayra for a British-owned railroad. After three years, Lushington went back to Trinidad but found that opportunities were insufficient in the island In 1889, he left Trinidad again for the United States, looking for broad and various labor markets. He landed in New York, where he set off for Binghamton, New York. In 1890, he met his Antiguan wife, Elizabeth Gavino Hubert. Her west Indian friends helped Augustus enroll in Cornell University to study Agriculture. He graduated with a degree in Agriculture in 1894. He then continued his education at the University of Pennsylvania veterinary school and finished the program in three years. When he graduated he was the only African American to graduate from the University of Pennsylvania. When students walk into the School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, the first thing they see is a portrait of Lushington. ā¤ļøš¤š #BlackHistoryMonth ā¤ļøš¤š SOURCES: American Veterinary Medicine Association, Wikipedia, and The Historical Marker Database (at Minneapolis, Minnesota) https://www.instagram.com/p/CaXglITL7mT/?utm_medium=tumblr
