Advice for writing Characters with Anxiety or PTSD!!

it's not just "worrying a lot" or one dramatic flashback scene. anxiety can be constant background noise, or it can hit in sudden physical waves, racing heart, nausea, feeling weirdly detached from your own body. PTSD is the nervous system staying on high alert long after the actual danger's gone. ask what the specific triggers and symptoms are before you write it, bc generalized anxiety and trauma-based PTSD work in genuinely different ways.

⤷ panic attacks are physical, not just emotional. chest tightness, dizziness, tingling hands, a feeling like you're dying or completely detached from reality. a character having one for the first few times might genuinely think something is medically wrong with them, not just "oh no i'm scared." it's not just breathing fast and looking spooked, it's the body convinced it's under attack.

⤷ triggers are rarely obvious or dramatic. a specific smell, a certain tone of voice, a particular time of day, fluorescent lighting. trauma responses often get triggered by mundane sensory details that seem to have nothing to do with the original event on the surface, and the character themselves might not even understand why they just shut down. don't limit your triggers to "seeing something that looks exactly like what happened," the brain makes connections that don't have to make sense to anyone watching from outside.

⤷ hypervigilance is exhausting and constant, not a dramatic beat. a character with PTSD might automatically scan every room for exits the second they walk in, sit facing the door out of habit, flinch at sudden movement or noise. this isn't them having A Moment, it's background behavior they've stopped even noticing themselves, bc it's just how their body operates now.

⤷ avoidance isn't cowardice, it's self-protection. a character refusing to talk about something, changing the subject, leaving the room, that's not necessarily weak-willed. avoidance is often the nervous system's own attempt to prevent a flashback or a panic response before it starts. writing forced confrontation as the only real path to healing is a common trope, but it's not actually how most healing works.

⤷ recovery isn't linear and doesn't end with one cathartic scene. a character can do real, genuine trauma work and still have a bad week months or even years later. writing healing as a single breakthrough moment after which the anxiety or PTSD is just "resolved" undersells how long and nonlinear this process actually is for most people, and honestly can make readers who are living through it feel like something's wrong with them for not being "fixed" already.

do the research, and if you can, read firsthand accounts from people who've actually lived through this rather than just other fiction that's already gotten it wrong.

Worldbuilding Notes: Types of Prisons in a Castle

Dungeon

underground cells, locked by bars or a wooden door

prisoners usually kept in chains or locked in cages in cells designed for discomfort (slanted floors, too small to stand or sit, ...)

damp, cold, dark, and often infested with vermin and rodents

Oubliette

narrow pits accessible only through a hatch in the high ceiling

prisoners either left to starve or given just enough food to survive for months of even years, alone in the darkness

after the prisoner's death the body was either removed or kept, to be discovered by the next prisoner

used for those that the captors wish to forget

Prison Apartments

typically for royals or nobles who are kept under house arrest in apartments instead of a cell

usually just normal rooms with guards positioned outside; in some cases prisoners were even allowed to move around the castle but not leave it

Torture Chamber

attached to the cells and equipped for the purpose of torture

somestimes made up of several chambers, in which prisoners would be taken from one to the next with progressively worsening conditions

a lot of the torture devices we think off when thinking back to such chambers have no record of ever being actually used (eg. the iron maiden)

Worldbuilding Notes: Differentiating between noble/royal residences

Palace

luxurious residence for high nobility

symbolical display of wealth and governance

often not or barely fortified

Castle

residence for nobility with fortifications and military structure

symbolical display of military power

often positioned strategically (on mountains or lakes, in river bends, …)

Fortress/Stronghold

purely functional defensive military outpost

usually in/near border regions for military to operate out of, lead offenses from and shelter retreating forces

Citadel

the most fortified area of a town or city (defensive core & last line of defense)

in form of a castle, fortress or simply a fortified center (defended through walls, elevation a maut, …)

houses military command, food storage and in time of war royalty

Keep

strongest, most defensible part of a castle in form of a tower

became highly uieffective with the invention of improved artilliary, as it became an easy target for cannons

alternate version would be a "bergfried," a tower with essentially the same function but not meant for permanent residence, only as a shelter during active invasion

Manor House

residence of a noble overseeing their lands and local peasants

mainly differs in function only

can be architectually very similar to a castle or could also be more similar to a farmhouse

typically no strong fortification, but often enclosed within walls or ditches

Bastion

a structure projective outward from the walls of a fortification, giving artillery better defensive positions and a greater range

contrary to a lot of modern (and even historic usage) a bastion is merely an architectual element, not its own kind of building

Keep in mind that the difference between some of these terms is mostly semantics. Often several terms could be applied (but don‘t have to be) or a term that wouldn‘t be fitting is applied because of its historical usage.

Worldbuilding Notes: Naming your Manor House

In order to name a manor house, usually a case specific suffix would have been added to the owner's last name, the region or toher related terms. While today almost all of the following may just be referred to as "Manor," these are the original classifications:

Court – buildings in which lords would receive their tenants (Eg.: Ashton Court, Kemerton Court)

Castle – Places of residence for royalty or residences of feudal barons in rule over several dozen other manors (Eg.: Lambton Castle, Hever Castle)

Park – used typically for houses built in the countryside with well-kept gardens and nature (Eg.: Hartham Park, Sandhill Park)

Place – likely a shortened form of "Palace", used for a grande residence with less royal connotations (Eg.: Hinxworth Place, Icomb Place)

Lodge – residences located in a royal forest during the feudal era, occupied by wardens or keepers of the forest (often specified as to the function: hunting lodge, fishing lodge, shooting lodge, ...) (Eg.: Queen Elizabeth's Hunting Lodge, Glen Affric Lodge)

Manor – residences for lords or (since the romantic revival) any grand country house (Eg.: Hughenden Manor, Ascott Manor)

Celebrations to have in your fictional society

Across humanity there are some things most known cultures have celebrations for and can be used well as an easy way to expand on the lore of your world without info dumping. here are some of them:

Independence / Unity / National / Freedom Day: the day used to commemorate when a nation, kingdom, or faction came together as one. This may be the day a treaty was signed, the day the former regime was overthrown, the day a new ruler was sworn in...

Ruler's Birthday: if there is a single or a few rulers, their birthdays might be celebrated with large festivities

End & Beginning of a year: regardless which calendar is used, most societies had some way to measure the length of one cycle (lunar cycle, every ___ amount of days, the beginning of a particular season, maybe something more abstract like the first day the flowers bloom or the day of the first snowfall...) and celebrate accordingly

Celebrating a Season: celebrating summer with festivities outside, spring with a flower market, autumn with a harvest festival, winter with a bonfire...

Day of Mourning/Remembrance: either in general or a day for remembering the dead from a certain event, tragedy, war...

Religious Festivals: depending on your type of belief system there could be many celebrations or only one or two

Historic Memorial Days: the day a war ended, the day of a massacre, the day of a revolution, the day of any grand and influential type of event that is remembered years later

Labour Day: a day to celebrate those who work hard to actually uphold the system and makes up the vast majority of the population, often accompanied by protest and conversations/demands between leader(s)/speakers of the people and the head of state

how to realistically write a bilingual character

no one who speaks 2+ languages ever “randomly” switches in the middle of a sentence. like that just…….. doesn’t happen? 

the only times people will get confused and mix them up is when:

a) they’re in an environment where they have to alternate between speaking two languages often/quickly, and the brain can’t keep up and messes up.

b) they’ve been in an environment where they have to speak/hear one language for a long time, and when they change settings it takes them a moment to not instinctively go for the other language.

c) they’re hearing one language (music, radio, background chatter) and trying to speak another 

interrupting themselves in the middle of a conversation because they can only remember the word they wanna say in another language

having the perfect idiom/expression for a situation but it doesn’t translate as well

having the perfect word for a situation but it doesn’t even fucking exist in that language

if ur character is out in public with their family, i can guarantee u that they’ll talk shit about people around them in their native tongue

calling their significant others pet names is a conscious choice. it doesn’t just “slip up”. it may come naturally with time, but saying a word in another language is something you like… immediately notice

swearing is complicated and i’m not getting into it rn 

anyone who has ever picked up another language has been pissed at specific vowels and pronunciations and this is the gospel truth

[forgets a word] [attempts to explicitely describe the thing they’re trying to say] [forgets a word while trying to explain themselves] “oh jesus christ nevermind”

will know how to speak a language but not know any of the mathematical/scientific/biological terms because they went to school in a different language and no one learns, like, algebra in a second language unless they studied in multiple languages.

How to create an atmosphere: Old Castle

For clarification, castles are very different in different regions. This is mostly inspired by Central European stone castles.

Sight

towering stone walls, uneven and weathered by centuries

narrow windows letting in thin beams of pale light

dust particles drifting slowly in the air

high vaulted ceilings or low, oppressive archways depending on the room

faded tapestries hanging along the walls, depicting worn, half-forgotten scenes

long wooden tables, with scratches and holes in it

heavy iron-bound chests

flickering torches or candles casting dancing shadows

a grand fireplace, sometimes lit, sometimes cold and full of ash

spiral staircases going above or below

suits of armor standing around

portraits with eyes that seem to follow you

cracks in the stone

creeping ivy if parts are exposed to the outside

Hearing

the echo of footsteps against stone floors

a distant dripping of water from somewhere unseen

the low howl of wind through corridors, arrow slits, or broken windows

the flutter of a flag being hissed above the castle

the crackle and pop of fire in a hearth

the occasional creak of ancient wooden doors or beams shifting

the flutter of wings if birds or bats have found their way inside

the rustle of fabric as someone moves through heavy clothing or cloaks

and im not saying canine and feline behaviors are wrong or bad to give a dragon (people wouldn't write dragons with those behaviors if they weren't fun in the first place!) but i feel for creatures that are mythological giant winged lizards that you can do more and get experimental with it. often the more unfamiliar behavior the more dragony the dragon feels
