No one before Bernini had managed to make marble so carnal. In his nimble hands it would flatter and stream, quiver and sweat. His figures weep and shout, their torses twist and run, and arch themselves in spasms of intense sensation. He could, like an alchemist, change one material into another - marble into trees, leaves, hair, and, of course, flesh. Â

Iâm a boxer and I donât see many characters who box, so I figured Iâd write this to encourage people to play a boxer or maybe just help people who already play boxers. Â Please like or reblog if you find this useful.
Letâs start with one of the fun parts, weight classes! There are tons of sections
and your weight class also depends on your level of skill. The sections are amateur boxing, womenâs professional boxing, and menâs professional boxing. Traditionally, there are only 8 weight classes but over the last century, even more have been added. Currently, there are 17 different weight classes. GLOVES
Obviously the most recognized thing a boxer can own. There are a few things you should know about the gloves, though.
The most important pair of gloves a boxer owns are their training gloves [also known as sparring gloves].
Training/sparring gloves are all purpose boxing gloves. They can be used from hitting the bags to sparring. There is a slight difference between your average pair of training gloves to the gloves advertised as sparring gloves. Sparring gloves tend to have extra padding so you donât have a bigger risk of harming a sparring partner.
The gloves your character will be using in competition, if they happen to do them, are known simply as competition gloves.
As an amateur boxer, there will be very specific size specifications. Fighting gloves are usually less thick than training gloves, and are lighter.
Gloves also have different weights. The weight of gloves are typically determined by what weight you are.
120lbs and below: 12oz to 14oz
120lbs-150lbs: 14oz to 16oz
150lbs - 180lbs: 16oz - 20oz
180lbs and up: 18oz and up
Not gloves, but in relation to them: Hand wraps.
Simply put: hand wraps are to protect your hands. Hand wraps protect the bones and tendons in hands. They will also help your wrist and thumb. Most people donât use them in sparring/training, but if your character has particularly sensitive hands or have broken their hand recently, they should be using the wraps. Their most common use is in competition but some fights opt out of using them.
TRAINING
Training for boxing is a lot more than just learning how to pivot and slip. Boxing requires a lot of stamina and dedication, while it is suited for those who like to hit things, itâs a lot harder than the masters make it seem.
If your character plans, or is, a professional boxer, they should be running a few miles every morning. If they are planning to be great, they should have a workout fit into their schedule each day. Most boxers do not do the same thing every day though, they switch what they work on. Legs, arms, abs, itâs an endless routine.
Now it comes to what actually improves the punches. Skill enhancement should be fit in every day, no matter what the character happens to be working on. Skill enhancement includes but is not limited to shadow boxing, bag work, punch mitt work with a trainer, and sparring and defensive drills.
A reminder: if your character is just starting off, they will not become a master within a year, or two, or three. Boxing is not an easy sport. It doesnât matter if theyâre a natural, boxing is not a skill you can gain overnight.
Training for boxing does not have any shortcut. Your character must train with intensity if they are planning on becoming great. By the way, pills canât help you here, boxing relies heavily on technique as well. Boxing is a ballistic and explosive sport, one of the only ways to prepare for the ring is by sparring as anything could happen in the ring.
By the way: even if your character IS a great professional boxer, they should still be practicing and working out every day. No matter how good they are at it, their intensity should never change.
BASIC MOVES
Iâm not great at describing the moves, so Iâll be making basic descriptions and linking to videos where boxers show how to do it so you can write it properly.
Stance: The stance usually depends on what their dominant hand is. Left handed people tend to be southpaw, right handed people tend to be orthodox. Of course, if your character has trained enough, they can switch easily. My brother likes to switch stances while sparring to confuse and piss off his opponent.
Left jab: The jab is the most important punch in boxing. It can attack, defend, counter, score points, make space, and many other things. Itâs your longest, fastest punch, uses the least energy, and leaves you the least vulnerable. [x]
Right straight: The right cross will naturally be your strongest punch because it comes from your dominant hand and gets leverage easily from the back. When combined, the jab and right cross become known as the basic but incredibly useful 1-2 combination. [x]
Left hook: The left hook is easily one of the deadliest punches in boxing. It comes from a side angle making it tricky to defend when an opponent is expecting straight punches. Itâs also common for knockouts because the punch turns the head and easily makes opponents dizzy. You can throw left hooks to the head with your fist horizontal or vertical; for a beginner, I recommend you to use the ones that feels most natural.
Left hooks to the body are the most common way to attack the body. The âliver shotâ (located under your right ribs) is known to be incredibly painful and has led to many body shot knockouts. Body shots typically take the wind out of you and kill your legs, hampering your ability to move. A well-placed body shot can momentarily paralyze your legs and keep you from standing even if youâre conscious and still willing to fight. [x]
Left uppercut: The left uppercut is a great punch to use on the inside or even mid-range. Itâs more powerful than the jab, comes fast, and can be quite unexpected. The only risk is that you have to be closer to your opponent and your left shoulder is not up to defend against your opponentâs rights. [x]
Right uppercut: The right uppercut is a devastating punch to use at close range or mid-range. Itâs very powerful to throw at the head or body. The greatest risk is that youâre dropping your right hand and exposing yourself to a counter left hook. [x]
DANGERS OF BOXING
As everyone knows, a bone or two is going to get broken in the ring or just in training, itâs expected. But there are a few more dangers you should be aware of [they can also be used as a plot device, who knows?].
Head injury: The American Association of Neurological Surgeons say that 90% of boxers sustain a brain injury. It is not surprising that head injury is so common in boxing. It is estimated that when a boxer gets a direct blow to the head it is like being hit by a 12lb padded, wooden mallet travelling at 20mph. Being hit on the head can cause fractures to the bone of the head and face and tissue damage in the brain. A blow can damage the surface of the brain, tear nerve networks, cause lesions, bleeding and sometimes produce large clots within the brain. The degree of damage suffered by boxers will depend on professional or amateur status.
Body damage: Cuts, bruises, broken teeth, dental problems, broken ribs, internal bleeding damage to internal organs.
Eye injuries: Although protected by very hard bone on the side eyes are very vulnerable to direct hits from below. Damage to the eyes in boxing can result from direct contact or from shock waves set up in fluid contents. Depending on the force of the blow damage may result in injury to the retina, retinal detachment, retinal hemorrhage, etc.
Remember: âFloat like a butterfly, and sting like a bee.â

Top Ten Things That Are Not Impressive For Action Characters
Sticking the landing . All this does is jack up joints. Collapse and roll. Hit the ground with the largest surface area possible.
Headshots . You sound like bragging gamers.
âOne shot, one kill.â Same as above. Aim for center mass and unload until they stop moving.
Disabling shots . Depending on the time period, youâre either consigning them to a lifetime of nerve damage and pain or a slow death from infection. Also, injured people can still fight back.
Anything with a flip . Telegraphing your moves and taking several extra seconds to get it done just allows the other fighter time to block.
Throwing people . Unless youâre literally trying to get some space for an escape or a ranged weapon, why did you throw them? It takes a ton of effort and now theyâre all the way over there.
Prolonged fights . Most brawls are over in seconds. Seconds. Competition fights last longer because there are safety limits and controls in place.
Ignoring backup . Congratulations on your âdoes not play well with othersâ sticker.
Overly complicated weapons . Different weapons were developed to take advantage of specific conditions, be they environmental, tactical, or weaknesses in your opponentâs situation. Picking the wrong one because it looks cooler just puts you at a steep disadvantage.
Basically anything overcomplicated . Climbing in top floor windows when you could walk in the service entrance. Fighting through twelve guards when you could poison someoneâs dinner. Training in eight martial arts styles when a pillow over the face will get them just as dead. Itâs not really that impressive to make more work for yourself.
