Art Drop Day 2017

When I first learned about Art Drop Day, I asked myself "Why I just knew about this now?" I mean, it's a great creative campaign but it should be reaching a lot of people.

I first learnt about this event as a Facebook friend of mine was interested to an Event Art Drop Day MNL. I checked it out because I got curious with the event title itself. And upon reading the event description, I hit “Interested” and put it on my planner to look forward to. 

Fast forward to September 5, I checked the event page and there are people who updates and gave out clues to where they hid dropped their art pieces. I was lucky enough that Danila Go or aka. @curiosdani, dropped some of her pieces near my workplace and so I found one!

I’m a fan of tarot cards and all that kind of witch-crafty, which is why I instantly fell in love with Dani’s piece. Overall, check her instagram because her weirdness awesomeness is amazing.

In return, I also left some of my pieces in the same area, different shelves hahah I’m just two days late of the actual ArtDropDay but it’s better late than never LOL I’m not really sure what to draw or share as an art but as a letterer, I think drawing letters would be fine :) 

 So I still hid these babies somewhere in Eastwood Cybermall. ;-) National Book Store to be exact. Here are the clues I posted on the Facebook Page :) I hope someone out there got my piece hahhaha

I think #ArtDropDay should be everyday. It’s good to know that someone out there appreciates your art. Or at least you’re surprising a random person to bring good vibes because of your art piece. I just thought that it’s win-win situation for both artist and receiver. The artist will have a larger audience which would increase motivation to create more, and the receiver will benefit from this especially in times of needing inspiration. 

Right now, I am drafting more lettering pieces. Not sure what to do with them but might produce more for #ArtDropMNL2018! Excited to see more people participate and to see more art pieces from different artists!

Ramen Place to Cure Hangover

I’m not really a fan of ramen but since friends and families are into it, I finally gave into it. 

Last May 27 this year was my cousin Jay’s wedding to Mitch. (Best wishes to you two!) and of course it was a reunion for us cousins, we had an after party at their place, got a little drunk and eventually have to go home.. NOT!

I didn’t go home as I was entrusted to my two other cousins and before heading to where Carlo was staying, we had to try out this ramen place he’s been wanting to try, the Ohsama Ramen. I was torned between sleeping and wanting ramen because I’m hungry but at the same time, tired from the event and the heels that nearly killed me. Even if I choose sleep over food, I’m outnumbered by my cousins so.. Hello, ramen!!

And because it’s been months since this happened, I forgot what we ordered. Actually, I didn’t made the order to myself. They have ordered food for me! hahaahahha! See that I’m still wearing the flower crown for the bridesmaids! ;)

So what’s the sense of this blog entry if I can’t even recommend something from the menu?!?!?!

I googled the menu from Zomato.com and from the photos (below) of what I had, I think I had Narubi Ramen which costs Php 320. It’s a big bowl of goodness so it can be good for two persons. You can just ask for another bowl or two small bowls if you’re going to share it with someone. yiiiieeee!!

Another question that you might be asking, How can this ramen cure hangover?

It’s not just another ramen. I mean, I’ve been into different restaurants and I can’t seem to find any difference though. But what made me get out of hangover, aside from the hearty ramen soup, is that place itself. It felt like I was in a different place which alerted my whole body that I was in a whole new place that kept me excited (and awake). 

ALSO!! It was past 3 when we got here so I think this is open 24 hours?!?! Idk guys but it says in Zomato profile that they’re open until 1 am. huhuhu

I wasn’t able to take photos of the whole place though. I was not planning to blog about this until today. hehe But it was spacious and it has a 2nd floor which I think is for the VIPs or function area.

DIY: Watercolor Travelling Kit

Last March, a colleague of mine from the art world introduced me to mint tins being used as alternative for watercolor travelling kits. I was about to purchase a ready to go watercolor travelling kit at a booth (you just have to add your watercolors into the pans) and then realized how broke I am that time. (Not really broke BROKE. But it’s way out of budget and it’s kinda pricey.) After a few weeks of being busy from my day job, I finally had the time to research on YouTube on how to DIY this watercolor travelling kit. Actually the main DIY here is the half pans that you really have to buy per piece. 

So here are all the materials I have used for this project. 

Materials Needed:

Empty mint tin can. It’s like Altoids kind of mint tin. 

Used prepaid load cards. Get those easily to be cut. 

Scissors

Cutter and cutting board

Marker

Ruler

Glue

Sponge

Paper towel

Waterbrush. So luck the Zig Kuretake waterbrush fits well in the tin can!

I was lucky enough that this mini 2016 calendar card from a bank also fits well in the tin can. It served as a base on my dividers so I tried to measure them as equal as possible.

So instead of putting together 4 mini walls to create only one pan, I cut out (lengthwise) of another prepaid card and divide it into creating 4 slots. Don’t cut it yet! Just put a marker on it. You’ll need 3 lengthwise cards. make sure height also fits in the tin can whenever you’re closing it. 

Get one lengthwise card and on the marked parts, create a thin gap in between the marked parts. So it’s something like this below. I tried my best to illustrate what I’m trying to say here. Thanks, Paint!

Then just add another lengthwise cards around the whole thing to secure them in place. As much as possible, I glue everything. hahhaa

Then I painted the whole thing in white so I could see the colors I would put it. 

Then yay! The finished product! Added the sponge in the extra space and watercolor papers on the lid, and tissue paper to cover the paints in case there are any leaks. :)

Hope you liked this DIY and I’m planning to do more if I find mint tins around the house. hahha

TYPE STUDY: Drop Caps v2

In my first Drop Cap post, the idea of making it literally just came out of the blue. It was hard at first, as I pushed myself to finish it on the day itself, and then I was feeling uninspired that time as the weather was so gloomy and I just prefer sunny days, so I can see my work better. Anyway here’s the story behind the comparison photo on the below.

On Type Ni Cye, I’m sharing every Thursday a throwback -- It’s a photo of my work years or months ago, and then I remake the old work with my newly acquired skills. Of course, the purpose of this weekly challenge for me is to know if I have improved or not. hehe.

So far, I am still learning, There’s a lot of learning to do, specially now that I enrolled to a premium class in Skillshare! yay! :)

Tuesday Tip # 1: But first, Draft

SoWhen I started lettering, I first worked with pencil, up until today. I always have a mechanical pencil in my pen case, just in case I need it. And the truth is, I always need it, despite of me being in this industry for almost 2 years. I admit I am not a pro, but I am now here because I humbly ask for experience and more learning from those who are also willing to teach me. 

You might be asking now, so what’s the point? What’s the essence of drafting first if you’re already a pro? Well guys, let me just break it down to you in 3 bullets. 

Drafting gives you a second chance. To make things right, as you want it to be. So when you misspelled a word, you won’t have to redo the whole thing again. 

Drafting gives you more options to choose from. Just like in the photo below, you can choose what kindly of style will suit your theme, style, and even mood. 

Drafting is essential simply because there’s no harm in it. Better to draft it first rather than going on to it, without proper planning. Therefore, Drafting = Planning. Draft ahead = Plan Ahead!

Some of you guys may already be doing this process. And thumbs up to you guys! I believe we’re just setting a better output from the previous idea that we have. There’s nothing wrong with that as we strive perfection. But remember not to be too hard on yourself, perfecting a piece. Finished, not perfect. If it is already perfect, what more to improve?

Blog Update and Posting Schedule

September is almost over guys! Preparing my September favorites but basically, this month I focused on my lettering workshop! Already have 3 one on one sessions lined up for October so I’m pretty excited on this! YAY!

I wasn’t able to do a 30 day challenge for September as I have to prioritize work and being an adult. Will share my adulthood journey soon! And so because there are a lot of things going on in my mind, I set up a schedule of my daily blog posts and page update.

On Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, I will post motivational phrases. Like for Monday, something that will put you on hype mode to conquer the week, then on Wednesdays, it’s the midweek so it should be something that will make you look forward on the weekend. Then on Friday’s, something to congratulate you for surviving the week. YAY!  #ChallengeYourselfEveryday

So what happened to the other days of the week?

Well, on Tuesdays, I share Tips or Reviews I learned from other Letterers and Calligraphers. I will compile them into one album uploaded in Type Ni Cye Facebook Page. I also encourage everyone to send me their own tips or reviews so I can add them in the album. Of course, credits will be given to where it is due ;-) and I call this #TuesdayTips #TipsandReviews

Then On Thursday, it’s Throwback Thursday! where I’ll be posting my previous artwork (as in way back 2 years ago or at least a year ago), then I’ll be creating a new one. With this, I can see my own improvement by comparing my own works. -- #ChallengeYourselfEveryday  or Lettering Type

And Last but not the least, the Weekends, Saturday and Sunday. Aside from spending my weekends on date nights or family day, I make sure I have allotted time for this passion project.  On Saturdays, I post a teaser of a mini project I’m working on. And on Sundays, I post the final output and share the details on the blogs. This could fall under CC: Cye Creates c Category in this blog

Seems easy right? But it’s a lot of patience and missing out on a day gets me frustrated so I need to work hard on my time management skills. UGH ADULTHOOD! Anyway, these mini projects could be 30 day lettering challenges, lettering series, a DIY project that I’ll be putting up in the Shop, or a typical type study, as I am in exploration of different mediums and lettering styles.

TYPE STUDY: Drop Caps

Focusing on hand lettering from now on and here’s my first drill. I challenged myself to make assorted Drop Caps as a little experiment. It was draining as I ran out of ideas after G. But with the help of internet, I was able to get inspirations from different resources. But what’s important here is that I learned from this challenge, and that is to never be afraid to try anything. I was a perfectionist, which is why I don’t get things done. I watched this video before writing this blog; it’s about being “finished not perfect”, very much applicable to me. Anyway, back to this type study, I was trying to blend in the colors just to make the whole picture pleasing to the eyes. Of course, I want my audience to be in awe of my work, right? It turned out fine, as I gain a few positive feedback on this work. But I felt it wasn’t my best, I wasn’t in my best when I did this. So I’m going to challenge myself again, but this time, I’m going to follow what inspires me, even if it could take some time. There’s no actually deadline here but I just need to work better in a faster pace and better quality of work. But for now, let me take things slowly. I got a lot of passion projects in mind and I hope I could apply the “finished not perfect” thing here. As I may finish a project but definitely will keep on working until it will look perfect for me. 

I hope you guys would do the same. Just get it done and do it again, and again, and again, until you ace that thing you’ve been working on.

BTS of Type ni Cye

Before launching TnC, I had to plan out the basic needs of the brand I am pursuing. And pretty much, I was stressed about how the materials I needed would look like to my audience/ readers. I was stressed until I realized that even big companies, change their logos. So after several attempts of logo creating, I settled with one, which is the one I’m currently using below.

I came up to this logo as I was inspired by many artists on instagram. No specific artist, of course. No to art stealing! Anyway, this one refers to me, my name as an artist (yes proclaiming it!) but lately I came into another creative idea of a logo, which is now for Type Ni Cye, really.

However, I’m still thinking about redoing my logo. And focus more on the brand Type Ni Cye, instead of my real name. Hehe

100 and counting!

So this is finally happening, letting the world know that Type Ni Cye exists! And here’s a blog post to give tribute to those who supported me on this journey. I know this is just a small number compared to the other letterers and type artists out there, but no need to compare myself, right? I hope you, my readers and followers, would stay with me on this roller coaster ride. I may have my shortcomings, not posting very often. But no worries, as I have planned out my blog posts for this month, and I have a lot of passion projects to share with you! 

Special thanks to my family, colleagues, friends, and calligrapher super friends! Shoutout to these people as they gave advises to which lead me here, now. :)

Requests now on Facebook Page!

After launching the Type Ni Cye Facebook page, I made an album of Requests, where I ask for their names or whatever the followers would want me to write down, but usually they would want me to write down their names/ nicknames. I asked only for the first 10 but I was overwhelmed that it exceeded my expected number, more than 20 I think. I thought it could be easy as I will just be writing down their names but what challenged me is the way I put color into the letters. It may seem just a simple brush lettering but I blended two colors as I move into the next letter. Of course, I referred to the color wheel. hehe

I prioritized the first 10, as promised. then on the following week, I did the names after it. Took photos per name and posted it in the album. So here are they.

so for September, I announced another requests. But this time, it’s “Hugot” requests. Emotional people (like me) probably can relate to this. But this time instead of the first 10, I got to choose the best 5. So if you’re reading this and have a “hugot”, click on this link and comment! Type Ni Cye Goes Live

After 2 years of learning lettering, I’m now making my own ~*brand*~. 

LONG POST AHEAD!

I’m still processing the feeling on making my hobby into a business venture. I don’t want to make the profit be my motivation in creating more artwork, I just want to share my babies and help me produce more babies. hehe so here are my thoughts in growing my own brand in this kind of creative industry. 

How it all started?

Ever since I started lettering, I posted my works on Instagram, then later on I posted my works in a Facebook Album entitled “Type Ni Cye”. You can check my Instagram account and see how bad I am at lettering. I’m not that GOOD compared to those who are pros in this field but at least people (mostly office mates, family and friends) appreciate my works. They say I’m good at it but I guess they don’t see yet the other artists around the metro. *huhu idolszz* But I really appreciate the fact that they know I’m in the craft. It’s all that matters to me. 

So what pushed me to pursue this craft?

Back when I was in still in high school, I started experimenting this craft as I’ve been seeing some of my classmates doing it on their notes and an older friend of mine taught me some basics. I stopped until my *girlfriends* had a friendly confrontation, to say what we like and dislike to one another. So I heard good things and what they dislike about me is that I copy their lettering. I was discouraged then, 

In college, I started to do it again but I became too busy with school so I wasn’t able to find enough time. Plus it’s not “uso” that time. LOL 

So now in the age of Instagram, I got into several posts in Explore tab and tadaaah, I found myself binge watching videos of calligraphy and then I got hooked and tried it myself. Started with a ball point pen, bought different pens, practiced for days, weeks, explored mediums for months, and now, I’m still on the journey of finding my own style. 

It has been a long journey and I think that incident back when I was a kid (and I really like writing) pushed me to find my style which resulted into this blog and shop. I learned that it’s a big creative world out there and there’s no room for judgement. I put up this blog not just to plug my works but also to encourage everyone how therapeutic this craft is. Also, to prove them that I don’t copy them, there are far more better artists out there. LOL 

How was the journey?

It was a roller coaster ride, just like any relationships. hehe There were moments my creative juice is overflowing and there were days I feel really uninspired. You can’t say when it strikes, you just got to be prepared so I always bring my journal and basic pens with me. 

After exposing my craft through social media, I gained followers of course, and most of them are my friends, which I am thankful and they’re supportive. So my purpose to encourage and motivate and I think I am doing the purpose with their responses. These people are really the ones motivates me to create more. 

Also, I gained calligrapher friends! I joined Facebook group: GP Calligraphers and I learned a lot of them, they are not afraid to teach their own techniques and accommodates different questions related to the craft. 

Final Thoughts?

Seriously, without the encouragement of my friends to create this blog, I wouldn’t be here. I feel overwhelmed still that I’m finally doing this, but I’m up for the challenge as I only dreamed of this months ago. It’s finally happening. There’s so much in my mind right now but I’m taking things slowly. hehe

Journal: First Half of 2016

I’ve been writing on journals ever since I was a kid. I started off with diaries until I reached college. From there, I bought different planners to see my list of things to do and it also served as a diary for me. *Will share my planners way back then in a separate post :) * Every year, I make sure that the planner I am going to use has a lot of space in case my creative juice over flows. I’ve buying expensive planners for last few years (no offense to those who prefer planners) but this year, I bought a Php 50 mini planner from National Bookstore which has the year and monthly views, Notes on each month, a few Notes pages at the end of the planner, and expense tracker, but No daily or weekly entries. Basically, it’s a straight forward planner and that’s my goal for this year actually. Just to get things done, and be productive. I love it as it comes with a cheap price. But I also bought 4 blank notebooks and they served as my “diary”. Can’t really take away my inner writer because I want this as memory keeper as well. Also bought these notebooks for Php 50 each. :) So I only consumed one notebook for the first 6 months of the year. Just perfect to separate them as the 1st Half and 2nd half of 2016. :) 

Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to complete April to June entries as I’ve been too busy with balancing work and social life. Here’s a quick video of my Journal’s progress.

Now that we’re on the 2nd half of 2016, I switched from free style journal to Bullet Journal. A new (but same) blank notebook I used for this new journal method. I made a switch because I find it hard to synchronize my things to do (mini planner) to my diary. I tend to focus more on the diary instead of the mini planner which made me feel like I’m being less productive, because I consume more time checking on two notebooks. UGH. 

Now, I’m still using the mini planner, for a quick view of events and deadlines.

Review: Dong-A MyColors 2

For the past years of learning Lettering, I have been investing a lot in different mediums and brands. I have my favorites but most of them are a bit pricey since the brands originates from abroad. I was about to lose hope when I realized that there’s this pen that could actually work for me. I bought a couple of colors, tried them out, then BOOM! Magic happened. An artwork was born. 

I’ve been using Dong-A My Colors 2 for two months, to be exact. In their previous line of colored pen products, I was still in college back then and I don;t have time to pursue lettering as I was busy at school. Fast forward to today, as my discovery of this new products, I am excited always to use them! So why colored pens?

Originally, I color my works with watercolor, then I got tired of the process which led me to try these babies out. After a few weeks of coming in and out of National Bookstore, I was able to collect 17 different colors. I’m just not sure where are the other colors but so far, I’m loving them! I’m not actually in a hurry in collecting them all. As I have mentioned in my previous post, I need to just buy what I need. So for this time, I am utilizing whatever’s within my reach. :)

I just can’t get enough taking pictures of them! It’s my first colored pen collection. :)

Here’s a closer look at the tips of the pen. I sampled Gray as it;s my current favorite color. I use this mostly for shading block fonts. :)

The ink flow is very consistent and vibrant. Just watch out onto your paper if you’re applying to hard. Suggesting to try a thicker paper, 100GSM perhaps. 

Super inlove with these babies. Not just their colors are vibrant, but also very affordable, compared to those big branded names. :) So thank you, Dong-A! For producing great products for an affordable amount. Hope to work with this brand soon as they add more products that might help me in lettering.

Desk Situation: How to Organize Your Work Space

In my previous blog post, I introduced you The White Space. It’s my personal paradise and woman cave, where I create most of my works. Also in that post, I promised to share my desk in details and a run through my favorite art materials. So here we are :)

Organizing my desk a.k.a. my work space, is one of my goals last year. I’ve been through a lot of trial and errors but planning what goes where is not that as easy as it looks like now. I wish I was able to keep my drafts of organizing my room, including this table below. It has been with me for my whole lifetime (used by my uncle who’s into architecture and design) and it used to be brown in color, with a map and plastic cover. But now I asked my dad to remove it and have it repainted to white, for my flatlays to be plain and clean.

Having an organized work space is crucial, especially when you have internalized that being artsy is already your lifestyle. That is why I treat this kind of planning seriously. I have a lot of art and craft materials, which is why I need to be organized so I wouldn’t lose my things in snap.

(During the chaos)

I needed big tables so that all materials I might be needing are already in place and no need to search for them. But what happens after the chaos? Of course, you put them back to where they should be, as you’re a grown adult. LOL So how do I do it?

1. Segregate the materials. I started off with 5 things. Pens, Paper, Tools, Paints, and ETC (which may consist of outputs, drafts, and novelties) In the photo below, I have all the papers or any canvass on the left side of the desk. It’s not just I’m utilizing the space there but also it gave me an easy access to just grab any paper in my reach.

2. Prioritize. In my 5 things, the Pens are just on the desk itself, where it’s just within my reach when working on the desk, same with the Paper as they are placed on the left side of the desk. Notice that I did not put them in any drawers of the table as they are my staple materials. Next are my useful Tools and ETC. In the photo below, it is the first drawer in the study table and it consists the usual school and office supplies such as Post Its, adhesives, and paper clips. Then I also put in here the ETC, which included unfinished works, notes and statement of accounts.)

3. Consider shelf life. In my second and third drawers, are my Paints or coloring materials. This includes from Crayons, textile paints to watercolors and coloring pencils. But what separates from the second drawer to the third is that, the shelf life. The coloring materials that I use most frequently are in the 2nd drawer, and in the 3rd drawer includes palettes, sponges and Enamel paints for Sign Paiting.

4. Buy another organizer. I’m a hoarder and it’s the ugly truth. I stopped hoarding art and craft materials when I realized I don’t have enough space in my room and I don’t want them cluttering around. LIFE LESSON: Buy only what you need. I learned this in a hard way. So now I am planning of how to make it till Payday, which I do for ROI because the artsy in me is not being contented. LOL but I am an adult so my financial stability is also important. 

I just like how my work space turned out. With all the materials that I have, I hope I can have more time to be creative with them. For now, I hope you learned a thing or two. Having an organized space is important, not just for adults but everyone who wants to straighten their life out. :) Hope you guys can share your desks with me and how you organize them as well :)

Art Haul: June 2016

When I said “I’m broke”, I mean it. Literally, but it doesn’t really show. LOL

This is the price you, rather I pay for being artsy and I don’t really regret spending money on the things I love. What I regret is that whenever I fail to use them. :| I kept buying art materials simply because I believe I can profit from them in the future. Of course, I also have plans of turning this kind of talent into a business. For the sake of ROI (Return of Investments.) heheh

So now, I going to share my hauls for the month, where I bought them at what price, so you could also compare if you have other suppliers. :)

NATIONAL BOOKSTORE, CYBERMALL EASTWOOD

Before going to work, I tend to stop by at NBS because the smell of art materials simply brightens up my days. LOL So I was just strolling then found these Photo frames. I bought two different sizes: 4 x 6 costs 64.75 Php and the 6 x 8 costs 94.75 Php. The Canson Watercolor paper costs 60 Php for 10 sheets of 200 gsm. :)

PANDAYAN BOOKSHOP, PASIG

From my previous post, I toured you around this local bookstore and promised to share my art haul, so here it is. Know my thoughts about the bookstore here :)  

Here below is from my second haul. I wasn’t able to take a photo of my first but it consists of mostly papers, (felt, 90 and 100 gsm Worx, glitters, and etc). So on my second time being in Pandayan, here’s what I got.

I bough the wooden mannequin because there’s only one stock. LOL Panic buying! But it’s kinda worth it because everytime I see it, I feel the artsy inside me and just be artsy in the moment. :)

For my latest haul, no paints nor pens nor brushes were bought. More on canvasses. I’m still exploring my own style which I try to variate my mediums as well. So here are the prices

I flipped over the Green Chalk Board with Frame to show you guys that there’s a string and screws where you can hang it on the wall. Neat!

That’s all so far and I don’t want to over spend my money. Hahaha

I’m now restricting to buy any further and work on my projects for ROI.

Pandayan Bookshop, Pasig

Last two months since I first heard about this local bookshop and it already has a lot of branches. I didn’t know much about this so I went to the nearest form my place, which is Pasig Branch. I’ve been here for three times and I never left this shop without buying anything because everytime I go here, there’s always something new to buy that I couldn’t buy any cheaper in other art supply stores. (Oh the hoarder in me!) Will share my art hauls in a separate post. :)

What I love about this shop is they have cheap materials, different craft needs, canvasses, and papers. They also have a cheap calligraphy set but this branch doesn’t have a stock, so I still have to wait. =(
