The relationship that each MBTI perception function has with the PAST - Explanation EN
It is very common to think that talking about your memories of the past is just something exclusive to the Introverted Sensing (Si) function, however, anyone can talk about their past. The difference lies in the relationship that each function establishes with it, in the way it describes, feels... In this sense, I will try to explain how each perceptive function observes its past, with examples to facilitate the understanding of the concepts.
Introverted Sensation (Si)
The Si has a very strong relationship with its memories. Every part of their experience (the ones that are important to them) is collected and stored for later use when they feel the need. The difference between Si and other functions is that its connection is strictly strong with the OBJECTS of the event.
For example: Suppose that as a child, the user of Si went for a walk with his sister. This would be the last day he would be together with her before his sister moved out of the country and didn't come home.
The user of Si remembers several details of the event: the stores he visited with his sister, the way his sister dressed, the color of her blouse, her straightened hair, the little chain she had in her hand, who the saleswoman was where she bought one bracelet... When she returns to that location again, Si is instantly teleported to this memory. Walking into the same stores makes him think of his sister, looking at the saleswoman makes him think of his sister. This is the strong link between the Si and the objects of the event.
Si is subjective, because his perception of things is internalized in his own perception of events. The seller is not just a mere seller, but someone very important in his affective memory. For other people, this salesperson is someone who sells things, for this Si user, this salesperson means the last moments he spent with his sister.
These users create a unique comparative sense of today with past events by intimately linking to objects. The car in particular can bring them different sensations, because it is what he inherited from his late father. The church is not just a church, but the place of your first marriage. The objects bring affective memories to these users who manage, in a splendid way, to recreate sensations of that moment, when they come into contact with these same objects again.
User Si does NOT remember everything. They are not a memory machine. You don't need to have an extraordinary memory to be a Si user. It is very common for other functions to remember more events than Si users. This is due to other functions vaguely remembering many EVENTS, but Si remembers SPECIFIC moments with many DETAILS. (*Internalize this. This information helps a lot while typing*).
Introverted Intuition (Ni)
Ni has a distant relationship with his past. He remembers the events, but is not the protagonist of his memories. It is as if your observation is in third person. Events are just events with no affective emotional connection to objects. What is important for the Ni user is the thematic connection of different events, they remind the essence of things, a general idea of something. Details are excluded, because something much bigger is being sketched.
Using the same example as above, Ni will focus on the essence of the event. The objects (materiality) are there as a mere representation of something bigger, because the essence (what is “between the lines”: what you cannot see, touch, smell...) is what matters to them. And this essence of the event for Ni can be several, for example, the focus on the feeling of sadness or joy, the farewell, the abandonment. Ni feels these sensations coursing through him as he brings up his memory. This is why users of this role are known for metaphors and abstractions, as concepts are an important part of their personal perception.
They can remember many events, but some events are confusing. Maybe they didn't even exist. The Ni user only cares about the connection of events, not the events themselves, which is why many details are lost along the way, which can make the Ni user think they remember things that, in fact, they didn't. User Ni's memories are general, global, somewhat superficial.
This is a good way to differentiate Ni from Si. Ni stores general aspects of his memories and cares about the thematic essence of the situation. Si stores detailed aspects of specific events, and cares about memory objects that have personal emotional affective meaning for them.
Si FOCUS on the elements of the event and internalize their personal meanings to these objects (her sister's bracelet, the things she observed during the tour, the stores, the clothes, the people...)
Ni FOCUS on the concept/essence of the situation (feelings, actions, state...).
Extraverted Sensation (Se)
User Se has a distant connection to the past. This is because the Se user likes to take advantage of current opportunities, current trends, which automatically distances him from what has passed. However, like everyone else, they remember past events, but for them, the objects of events are not important (Si), the essence of the event (Ni) is also not important. User remembers events exactly as they happened.
Still using the same example above, the user of Se, when describing this memory, reproduces it faithfully to reality. The Se user is LITERAL and OBJECTIVE when describing events, which means that it will say exactly what was actually happening.
For example, he could describe the day as “I went into some stores with my sister, we had a lot of fun, we bought ice cream, we went to the movies...”. The difference from the Se to the Si is that the Se is described without details, being concrete and not personal. This means that he has no object relations when he remembers the past. It doesn't bring that air of “intimacy” with the elements, because it's a day that has passed, and other opportunities will come. However, the Si is concrete and puts a personal meaning in the memory, which means that the elements seen (shops, ice cream, the cinema...) have affective meanings for the Si. When he observes these objects again, his memory already associates the object with this event in a personal way.
The user of Se, being extremely realistic, can remember events faithfully, something that Ni/Si cannot. This happens because the Si remembers what matters TO HIM, the Ni focuses on the theme and can easily forget about concrete elements that were seen, but the Se focuses on the general and is concrete, which offers a more accurate/objective description of the events of the than other functions.
Extraverted Intuition (Ne)
User Ne looks at the past as an entry point to new possibilities. The Ne user likes to explore the different, the new, what can happen... This leads Ne to see the past very sensitively, but with great underlying potential.
Following the example above, the Ne user would be the type of person who would think about the “what if” of the event. “What if I had done it differently? What if that day had never existed? What if my sister and I were still together? And if?". Si remains in the affective memory of the situation, Ni explores the thematic field of the situation, Se faithfully describes the situation, while Ne looks for the possibilities that could arise if things were different and other choices were made. It's as if Ne's mind is a game of choices, and he can think of possible situations that could have happened.
That's why it's wrong to say that Ne doesn't care about the past, in fact, he cares about these memories, but uses them to see the potentials that could arise if things were simply different, exploring different scenarios of the same situation.
Another example
Event: The day my friend and I were waiting for the bus right after class.
Si: "I remember that day. He was wearing a necklace he got from his mother. The sky was almost darkening, but the stars had already started to appear. The bus, however, was taking a while, but I'm glad that happened because I got to spend a lot of time talking to my friend. We talked about everything: what he would like to do in college, how much he hates his older brother, and the pressure his mother puts on him to finish his studies. The years go by and I still can't look at that bus stop without thinking about the first time we talked about the future."
Si:
* Affective-emotional relationship with objects from the past;
*Focus on event details;
*Internalized subjective perception of what was observed in the presented event.
Ni: "That moment was about falling in love. Falling in love for the first time. I think the universe does calculations like math students. Everything is so premeditated. The bus delay and this person next to me, everything had to be exactly as it has been. Well... I keep thinking, first times are weird as fuck, aren't they? You've never been through something like this before, here comes a spark of courage you didn't know you had. You try to do it right, but in end of the journey, you just want to come back at that exact moment, when that courage had not yet awakened. Not at that moment."
Ni:
*Thematic exploration of events, instead of exploring concrete elements;
*What matters is the essence of the event, everything is part of something “bigger”;
*Details and object are irrelevant. There is no connection of the "I" with the past;
*Use of metaphors, comparisons, abstractions.
Se: "My friend and I were at the bus stop waiting to go home. The bus stop was full of people. The bus took a while that day but when it arrived I felt relieved because I was tired and he told me that too Oh, speaking of him, he's nice, isn't he? I felt at that moment that I liked him more than I should. I haven't seen him in years."
Se:
*Concrete/literal/objective description of the event (external);
*Does not focus on details;
*There is no affective-emotional factor with the elements of the event.
Ne: "I was waiting for the bus with my friend and that was the moment we got to know each other best. I fell in love with him, and years later we started dating. But I still ask myself: what if I had skipped class that day? Had the bus arrived early? We wouldn't have had the time we had to talk to each other. Maybe we never had the courage to question what we question each other. The craziest thing would be if it was someone else in that place. My life would be completely different These options make life so much more fun, don't you think? I mean... if I just didn't fall in love with him, who would I be with right now? Would I be as happy as I am today?"
Ne:
*No affective-emotional relationship with the concrete objects of the memory;
*Explore different and new possibilities of the situations that happened;
*The event itself is not that relevant, but the inherent possibilities that could have arisen from it.
**Important: TRAUMA should not be considered when typing. We all have traumas and memories so strong that we simply want to forget. The feeling of “being stuck in the past” is not unique to Si and inferior Si users. Note other elements during character analysis.**
*Relação afetivo-emocional com os objetos do passado;
*Foco nos detalhes do evento;
*Percepção subjetiva internalizada do que observou no evento apresentado.
*Exploração temática de eventos, ao invés de exploração de elementos concretos;
*O que importa é a essência do evento, tudo faz parte de algo “maior”;
*Os detalhes e o objeto são irrelevantes. Não há ligação do "eu" com o passado;
*Uso de metáforas, comparações, abstrações.
*Descrição concreta/literal/objetiva do evento (externo);
*Não tem foco em detalhes;
*Não há fator afetivo-emocional com os elementos do evento.
Eu seria tão feliz quanto estou hoje?”
Características de Ne:
*Sem relação afetivo-emocional com os objetos concretos da lembrança;
*Explorar diferentes e novas possibilidades das situações que aconteceram;
*O evento em si não é tão relevante, mas as possibilidades inerentes que poderiam ter surgido dele.
Ni: The 'introverted intuition' (Ni) is a function in which the user assumes the role of an observer far from the literal world, trying to understand situations through a chain of events that connect forming patterns, thus, a function of convergence. The Ni user will constantly "feel" that there is something more to discover and is not content with what he sees only on the surface. These hunches of Ni user are called visions. An elaborated vision inevitably develops on the basis of these abstract relationships, designed to give predictability to the life and continuity of the narrative. The world is never seen literally by the Ni user. Furthermore, these users prefer caution and are always thinking about what "comes next" to prepare for possible events that might happen.
Ni (Unhealthy): When Ni users assume their unhealthy form, they can rely too much on their intuitions, to the point of ignoring tangible reality, avoiding any kind of situation that could be compromising according to their hunch. In addition, their suspicions can bring to light a false interpretation of events, and feel that there is "something more" to everything, even reaching paranoia. The user of unhealthy Ni can also get stuck in his tunnel vision, to the point where he doesn't see any other possibilities in his life than the one he has already pre-established, going so far as to be extremely perfectionist in order to achieve his vision. If he doesn't have tunnel vision, his central focus may be the search for something meaningful and metaphorical, which if healthy, elevates Ni's thoughts and brings light to his perception of the world, but if extreme, it can lead to exaggerated perfectionism.
Ni [Dominant]: Joe prefers to look at the world through his own distant lens, and by staying in the present reality he is always looking for an abstract concept seen in his monologues. This point becomes very evident when we look at Joe's real motivations and realize that he is strongly supported by an intangible concept of relationship where the concrete and sensory aspects are just mere elements for an even greater meaning of the image he created about " love". In addition, Joe often relapses into intense internal monologues trying to unravel a topic and all its associated information in order to put together a complete picture of what he observes (big picture). An example of this action is seen when Marienne argues with Joe after he becomes involved in her conflict with her ex-husband. He finally realizes the inherent pattern of women he's obsessed with, coming to the conclusion that he chose Marienne because she, Beck and Love have internal issues/traumas that Joe wants to try to "fix" in order to feel better about himself. The main essence behind Joe's actions always stems from a broader metaphorical meaning about "love" and his insatiable search for the person who will "fix" him. Your romantic relationships are not seen literally, but rather as part of a vision of something even bigger and more meaningful. In addition, Joe also shows concern in trying to understand the next steps of situations/events, when trying to "predict" possible actions that will come next. This is made clear in her final scene with Love, when Love Quinn and Joe are in an argument and she has to go out for a minute to look after her son. At this point, Joe tries to analyze what possibly Love Quinn can do next and prepares for it, later leading to her death.
Fe: The 'Extroverted Feeling' (Fe) is a function of objective judgment, where its users start from the premise that its values must contemplate the external needs of the social atmosphere, valuing the well-being and structuring of a more harmonious society. It is quite natural that the user of Fe understands social dynamics, as well as human behavior (how we act, how we get emotional, our motivations...).
Fe (Unhealthy): The unhealthy Fe user can play many different roles and dissociations when unhealthy. They can be extremely manipulative, and use their skill and knowledge of other people for personal gain. Furthermore, the Fe user can be quite resentful when individual actions disrupt and disrupt the social environment, precisely because they see these attitudes as selfish. If Fe users have been subjected to injustices in a social aspect, a bitterness can develop in their directive to the point of going against authorities, institutions and humanity in general. And in this case, unlike user Fi (healthy), who seeks to understand their own actions, in a sense of self-blame and try a corrective attitude, for Fe user, the world is seen as responsible for their pain and they will charge moral condemnation in every opportunity.
“ So far extraverted feeling is just as beneficent and rationally effective as extraverted thinking. [But this salutary effect is lost as soon as the object gains an exaggerated influence]. For, when this happens, extraverted feeling draws the personality too much into the object, i.e. the object assimilates the person, whereupon the personal character of the feeling, which constitutes its principal charm, is lost. Feeling then becomes cold, material, untrustworthy. It betrays a secret aim, or at least arouses the suspicion of it in an impartial observer. No longer does it make that welcome and refreshing impression the invariable accompaniment of genuine feeling; instead, one scents a pose or affectation, although the egocentric motive may be entirely unconscious. “
Fe: In judging the world around him, Joe trusts Fe, his aux. In this sense, he prefers to make a human behavioral judgment and an analysis that aims to understand other people's motivations, rather than directing towards self-knowledge (Fi) or performing an analysis aimed at a more systematic, efficient and categorically more ingenious society (Te). Therefore, his main focus is always to understand the people around him, judging from the outside in, rather than turning inward to understand where his attitudes come from, what he discovers by chance, due to problems related to your mother. Joe's internal monologues are a severe critique of human attitudes, in addition to being a keen student of the "human being", he seeks to understand women in order to adapt to each in his own way. In addition, Joe always thinks objectively, noting how certain actions affect other people, his own family, and even the obsessions he encounters along the way. This point is seen, for example, in the countless times Joe approaches Love Quinn showing the consequences of his actions for his son, Marienne, and even for Natalie.
Ti: 'Introverted Thinking' (Ti) is a logical and subjective analysis function, which starts from your own internal thought system when solving problems and judging situations/events. The functioning of the IT is more informal, holistic, qualitative and improvised in nature. In this sense, the user of Ti tends to reduce norms/ideas/social things into parts, but not necessarily with the pretense of putting them back together. These thoughts will occupy the mind of the Ti user continually and can cause things to lose their value as the process of reduction takes away all meaning. The user Ti will be constantly questioning himself about everything, and being guided by the motto: "what makes sense to me?"
Ti: Despite being a tertiary role, Joe demonstrates heavy use of Ti along with his Fe throughout the program, which makes him appear extremely analytic. When analyzing the people around him, his critical form manifests itself intensely, criticizing the logic behind the social mechanisms and behaviors of the people he observes. In season three, his Ti becomes even more evident when he can easily come up with a rational way to get rid of Natalie and Love Quinn's bodies. And, unlike Love Quinn, who constantly turns the task of solving the "problems" of his crimes to Joe, he finds it easier to organize these issues in a rational way.
Se: 'Extraverted Sensing' (Se) is a 'camera' function where its users observe the world exactly as it appears in high fidelity. It is a highly realistic function and a Se user's focus is linear rather than divergent (Ne). They will want to delve deeply into the experience of one thing, rather than spreading out in a broad and limited way. Unsolicited tangents can be very upsetting for them. In addition, users of Se find it extremely easy to act in the moment, both adapting and improvising.
Se (Unhealthy): The Se user in their sick phase may be overindulgent with sensory pleasures, plunging into excesses and addictions. Also, when unhealthy this leads them to avoid thinking about the future, wanting to stay fully in the present and live in the moment, and this can lead to situations of impulsiveness. In other situations, the Se user's stress can manifest itself in unhealthy opportunism. The function Se will always be looking, to great advantage, for the best possible experience and, when distressed, this impulsiveness can lead to certain unethical behaviors.
Se [Inferior]: The concrete world is seen by Joe as an optic merely associated with his image created by Ni. Joe enjoys sensory pleasure, but with the aim of staying true to his perception of relationship via Ni of the "ideal person". He does not look at people literally, valuing totalized reality (If), but rather through the conception of an intangible concept about love that he pursues throughout his life. Beck, Love and Marienne are not just women in Joe's eyes, but people who are part of his even broader concept of what he means by "loving" and being "loved". In addition, Joe shows great repudiation of instant acting, often sticking to a schematization of something to come, even though he doesn't know exactly what comes next, relies heavily on his intuition.
Why not
Fi user: Although Joe seems like a Fi user, focused on himself and his feelings, Joe's lack of Fi shows clearly how he doesn't subjectively prioritize what he likes, as his systematization of judgment is not done by "like/dislike", but by "this needs to be done". The primary difference between Fe/Fi users is the focus of judgment. The Fi user turns to a unique and melancholy feeling about his view of the situation: "I feel something is wrong with me", while the Fe user directs his judgment to something objective: "This is wrong, I have to change. It's the better for both of us". Joe falls into the second type. Your understanding of your actions is always known from an external perspective. He decides to "change" his way when he realizes that his actions harm other people (his son and his wife), which comes from an external view of judgment. The user of Fi leaves for change after a deep self-reflection of actions, which do not need an external impact, but a change initiated by their dissatisfaction with their own image. The Fi user knows himself very well to the point of understanding his limits, but Joe is constantly in crisis with his own image that is triggered by an unpleasant external situation. Furthermore, his ability to break his moral codes is a very strong point in his character. Joe kills Marienne's ex-husband, even when he swears he wouldn't do it again. He betrays Love Quinn, even as he swears to himself that he would become a better person.However, while a Fi user can break codes, these actions aren't really a point of questioning for Joe, who doesn't seem to mind this breaking of values. Another point that becomes clear about his lack of Fi is during marital therapy with Love Quinn, in which he allows her to describe all of her feelings about their relationship, however he shows no interest in putting his own at risk. He also has no difficulty lying about his emotions to keep his marriage on track.
➥ Fe [Dominant]: At the end of season two, we find out that Love Quinn plays a different persona than her true personality in attracting Joe. She incorporates a sweet artist focused on her personal life to make him fall in love with her. This knowledge came from her astuteness in understanding the profile of the victims selected by Joe and acting as someone other than herself, as a form of psychological manipulation. In season three, her commitment to her social roles becomes an even stronger tie in her life, especially through her efforts to be a good mother and wife. She starts from a series of attempts to rekindle the marriage, and uses the advice of her new friend Sherry to make it come alive. Love Quinn sets out to be the ideal "mother and wife" commonly seen in the community, taking family photos, throwing community parties, and actively participating in their proposed activities.
➥ Ni [Aux]: Love Quinn is not seen as an observer of the world all the time, besides being more present than the dominant Ni, but as an auxiliary function, her role is played along with her Fe as a way of perceiving the world through a own perspective of convergence, after judging the situation in an valuative and objective way. Love Quinn constantly presents her intuitions in how she perceives situations beyond the surface, especially in her relationship with Joe. She prefers to trust her hunches from her conscience rather than something she has withheld through past events. In the final episode of season three, Love Quinn discovers that Joe cheated on her with Marienne when she intertwined the fact that he was always late from work (a pattern of behavior) with the "sudden" death of Marienne's ex-husband. She observes the patterns of situations and comes to the conclusion of the situation: her husband did not love her, after encountering a new obsession. This all stemmed from his feeling that Joe was acting strangely and later observing this pattern. Other situations where her Ni is evident is in the creation of her tunnel vision in her relationship with Joe in season two, when she organizes a scheme to become a new "obsession" of him and possibly have a deeper relationship. This whole relationship still builds on Love Quinn's attribution of meaning, making it deeper by saying they are "soul mates" in something like "we were meant to be together", repeating this even in her death. She spends the entire season acting through that vision, finding ways to keep Joe in a relationship with a fake persona. She finally manages to keep this relationship more productive after telling Joe she was pregnant.
➥ Se [Tert]: As a tertiary function, your Se manifests her Self in an uncontrolled and exalted way, inevitably in an unhealthy way. In season three, at times when her marriage to Joe wasn't so good, Love followed her feelings of impulse, abusing sensory pleasures like having sex with Theo. The manifestation of Se not healthy can also lead its users to have certain unethical behaviors, this passage is seen in Love Quinn throughout the season when she kills Natalie to keep her marriage "on track" and when she does the same with Theo, for the " well" of his family.
➥ Ti [Inferior]: As an inferior function, Love Quinn represses her Ti constantly to remain in her judgment via Fe, which mostly starts from an impulse to protect other people. The manifestation of her inferior function represents a disconcerting part of the character that often needs Joe's help to "fix" problems. Love kills Natalie to "protect" her marriage and doesn't check the general aspects of the crime, such as hiding the body, check the phone's GPS, among others. Also, the critical part of Love Quinn always appears in the dark, and this happens when she attends Sherry's party and severely criticizes each of the party guests pointing out everyone's faults, however, she remains with a smile on her face. In a moment of stress, Love Quinn takes on a more discerning role, criticizing her mother's book, and Sherry and Cary's "false and media" marriage.
