sometimes i wonder what would happen if one day Elio gets up the courage (bites back the pain) enough to dial Oliver’s phone number in America. And it’s been probably about a year since he’s talked to him, and he’s forbidden his father to mention anything about Oliver since they got wedding invitations in the mail, but Elio had a dream last night of peaches and sunshine and blue, blue eyes and the golden glint of light off of a Star of David necklace, and his chest won’t settle until he- he just has to know, right? So he dials Oliver’s number and waits with his eyes tightly shut as the phone rings and rings until finally that deep, deep masculine voice says “hello?” and Elio takes in the smallest breaths to answer, to greet what, for a summer, was the center of his universe. But he can’t. And oliver will say “hello” again to no response. But something will change and then Oliver on the other line will take a deep breath and whisper his own, “Oliver?”

And Elio will open his eyes and smile, but will hang up the phone.
