@tyrnnicat
the feynman technique
Hi it’s werelivingarts. Thank you so much for your support in my previous ‘Eat the Frog’ post! Feynman technique is a key to learn anything where teaching is extremely essential to master a concept. Teach yourself and others and actively engage in your studying!
There’s no miracle people. It just happens they got interested in this thing and they learned all this stuff. There’s just people.” – Richard Feynman.
How to Handle Having TOO MUCH To Do
So let’s say you’re in the same boat I am (this is a running theme, have you noticed?) and you’ve just got, like, SO MUCH STUFF that HAS to get done YESTERDAY or you will DIE (or fail/get fired/mope). Everything needs to be done yesterday, you’re sick, and for whatever reason you are focusing on the least important stuff first. What to do!
Take a deep breath, because this is a boot camp in prioritization.
Make a 3 by 4 grid. Make it pretty big. The line above your top row goes like this: Due YESTERDAY - due TOMORROW - due LATER. Along the side, write: Takes 5 min - Takes 30 min - Takes hours - Takes DAYS.
Divide ALL your tasks into one of these squares, based on how much work you still have to do. A thank you note for a present you received two weeks ago? That takes 5 minutes and was due YESTERDAY. Put it in that square. A five page paper that’s due tomorrow? That takes an hour/hours, place it appropriately. Tomorrow’s speech you just need to rehearse? Half an hour, due TOMORROW. Do the same for ALL of your tasks
Your priority goes like this:
5 minutes due YESTERDAY
5 minutes due TOMORROW
Half-hour due YESTERDAY
Half-hour due TOMORROW
Hours due YESTERDAY
Hours due TOMORROW
5 minutes due LATER
Half-hour due LATER
Hours due LATER
DAYS due YESTERDAY
DAYS due TOMORROW
DAYS due LATER
At this point you just go down the list in each section. If something feels especially urgent, for whatever reason - a certain professor is hounding you, you’re especially worried about that speech, whatever - you can bump that up to the top of the entire list. However, going through the list like this is what I find most efficient.
Some people do like to save the 5 minute tasks for kind of a break between longer-running tasks. If that’s what you want to try, go for it! You’re the one studying here.
So that’s how to prioritize. Now, how to actually do shit? That’s where the 20/10 method comes in. It’s simple: do stuff like a stuff-doing FIEND for 20 minutes, then take a ten minute break and do whatever you want. Repeat ad infinitum. It’s how I’ve gotten through my to do list, concussed and everything.
You’ve got this. Get a drink and start - we can do our stuff together!
WOAH THIS SOUNDS HELPFUL. I’M GOING TO TRY THIS IMMEDIATELY. Also, I made a chart for myself, but if anyone else wants it for reference (or if this is wrong and I misread you can tell me) here it is:
I’ve been struggling with it since day one and even now I don’t think it is perfect, but with some help, it got better and better every time. Here are a few links with tips that definitely helped me out!

2016 Planner Printables
Hi! The New Year is approaching rapidly, so I’ve been thinking a lot about planning, and what method I’m going to try next month… The beggining of a new year after all!! (for us planning freaks, this is a really big deal)
I’ve gathered a bunch of material that I found all around, from different websites and blogs of talented people, that definitely inspired me to make my own planner.
Nothing in here is mine. I’ve linked directly to the file in question so this is a whole lot faster for both you and me, so I’m writing the author next to it. If you, reading this, are the author of one of the files, and want me to take it down or feel uncomfortable with this, then please inform me, I will do so!
And don’t forget these printables are for personal use only.

my masterlist of 'how to life’ tips
Cleaning & Tidying
Make your bed in the morning. It takes seconds, and it’s worth it.
Reset to zero each morning.
Use the UFYH 20/10 system for clearing your shit.
Get a reed diffuser and stick it on your windowsill.
Have a ‘drop-zone’ box where you dump anything and everything. At the beginning/end of the day, clear it out and put that shit away.
Roll your clothes, don’t fold them - or fold them vertically.
Automate your chores. Have a cleaning schedule and assign 15mins daily to do whatever cleaning tasks are set for that day. Set a timer and do it - once the timer is up, finish the task you’re on and leave it for the day.
Fold your clothes straight out of the tumble dryer (if you use one), whilst they’re still warm. This minimises creases and eliminates the need for ironing.
Clean your footwear regularly and you’ll feel like a champ.
Organisation & Productivity
Learn from Eisenhower’s Importance/Urgency matrix.
Try out the two-minute rule and the Pomodoro technique.
Use. A. Planner. (Or Google Calendar, if that’s more your thing.)
Try bullet journalling.
Keep a notebook/journal/commonplace book to dump your brain contents in on the regular.
Set morning alarms at two-minute intervals rather than five, and stick your alarm on the other side of the room. It’s brutal, but it works.
Set three main goals each day, with one of them being your #1 priority. Don’t overload your to-do list or you’ll hit overload paralysis and procrastinate.
If you’re in a slump, however, don’t be afraid to put things like “shower” on your to do list - that may be a big enough goal in itself, and that’s okay.
Have a physical inbox - a tray, a folder, whatever. If you get a piece of paper, stick it in there and sort through it at the end of the week.
Consider utilising the GTD System, or a variation of it.
Try timeboxing.
Have a morning routine, and guard that quiet time ferociously.
Save interesting-looking shit to instapaper. Have a set time where you read through the stuff you saved to instapaper and save the shit that you like from instapaper to evernote (or bookmark it properly).
During your working hours, put on your footwear, even if you’re sat on your bed. (Why?)
Have a folder for all your important documents and letters, organised by topic (e.g. medical, bank, university, work, identification). At the front of this folder, have a sheet of paper with all the key information written on it, such as your GP’s details, your passport details, driving licence details, bank account number, insurance number(s), and so on.
Try using StayFocusd and RescueTime (or similar apps/extensions). (I promise, you’ll find that you’re not as busy as you think you are.)
Schedule working time and down time alike, in the balance that works for you.
Money
Have. A. God. Damn. Budget.
Use a money tracker like toshl, mint, or splitwise. Enter all expenses asap! (You will forget, otherwise.)
Have a ‘money date’ each week, where you sort through your finances from the past seven days and then add it to a spreadsheet. This will help you identify your spending patterns and whether your budget is actually working or not.
Pack your own frickin’ lunch like a grown-up and stop buying so many takeaway coffees. Keep snacks in your bag.
Go to your bank and take out £100 in £1 coins (or w/e your currency is). That shit will come in useful for all kinds of things and you’ll never be short on change for the bus or the laundry.
Food & Cooking
Know how to cook the basics: a starch, a protein, a vegetable, and a sauce.
Simple, one-pot meals (“a grain, a green, and a bean”) are a godsend.
Dried porcini mushrooms make a fantastic stock to cook with.
Batch cook and freeze. Make your own ‘microwave meals’.
Buy dried goods to save money - rice and beans are a pittance. (Remember to soak dried beans first, though!)
Consider Meatless Mondays; it’s healthier, cheaper, and more environmentally friendly.
Learn which fruits and vegetables are cheapest at your store, and build a standard weekly menu around those. (Also remember that frozen vegetables are cheap and healthy.)
Learn seasoning combinations. Different seasoning, even with the exact same ingredients, can make a dish seem completely new.
Don’t buy shit for a one-off recipe, especially if you won’t use it all. If you really want to try out a recipe, see if a friend would be interested in making it with you, then pool for the expenses.
Make your own goddamned pasta sauce. Jamie Oliver has a decent recipe here, but the beauty of tomato sauce is that you can totally wing it and adapt the fuck out of it.
Misc
Have a stock email-writing format.
Want to start running, but find it boring? Try Zombies, Run!.
Keep a goddamn first aid kit and learn how to use it.
Know your OTC pain relief.
Update your CV regularly.
Keep a selection of stamps and standard envelopes for unexpected posting needs. (It happens more regularly than you would think!)
Some final words of advice:
Organisation is not a goal in itself, it is a tool. Don’t get caught up in the illusion of productivity and get distracted from the actual task at hand.
Routines and habits will help you. Trust in them.
You have the potential to be an organised and productive person, just as much as anybody else. It just takes practice.
You’re brave. Nothing ever happens to the brave.

How To Get A Job Fast As Hell
@owenabbott
Apply to a job, wait (1) day, then call. Give them your first and last name. Tell them you submitted an application and that you’re very motivated to find [Enter field name] work. Let the conversation lead you wherever it takes. Be very polite. Say” thank you for your time, I’ll be looking forward to hearing back from you.” Rinse, repeat. This is to force them to be looking out for your application.
When you get to the interview, shake their hand firmly, tell them your first and last name.
Describe your experiences as “ two years transcription and data entry” if you have a desk job interview and “ [however many years] costumer service, retail and stock” for your retail jobs.
Don’t use job “ buzz words” I stg they hear them all day. Say things like, “ I’m detail oriented and am very good at taking instruction.” “ I would like to work for a company with integrity and I feel that [ company name] would be a good fit”
When they ask you if you have “reliable transportation” say YES. don’t tell them what kind of transportation, just say yes. (if you don’t do this, you wont get the job , I’m telling you right now).
Research the company. Know what they do, why they do it, how OLD the company is. WHERE it was founded, and what kind of position you’re intending to apply for.
When they ask you “ give us a situation where you had to blah blah blah” Make one the fuck up. Make yourself sound good as hell, and like you put your company’s needs slightly above the customer’s needs, but make the customer happy.
If they ask you about being outgoing, Say you “like to focus on your work so you can concentrate on doing things right” (which buys you out of having to act friendly all the time)
Questions for after the interview:
1. Does this position offer upward mobility?
2. Do you enjoy working for the company? (if you’re not interviewing for a temp agency who will send you anywhere)
Then, shake their hand, Ask them to repeat their name (REMEMBER THIS) say thank you for your time, wish them a nice day and leave. write their name down outside if you have to, just remember the fuck out of it.
AFTER your interview, send a card directed to the name of the person who interviewed you (I’ll give you them) that says “Thank you for the interview, I appreciate the opportunity. have a great day” This shows that you have an understanding of professionalism, and will have them thinking of you kindly (or at least remembering you) when they’re shuffling through the choices.
DO NOT tell them you just moved to the city over the phone. In person, tell them you just moved to the city. Make it sound like the only reason you need a job is because you moved. Not because you’re desperate.

How meal planning works: Shopping for your groceries and spending time to make your food might be slightly more time consuming than picking up something ready-made from the store, but I’m here to make this way easier for you !! ʕ •ᴥ•ʔゝ☆
For those students who have a cafeteria at school, you might have noticed that the food isn’t usually the cheapest option and is definitely not well fitted to your taste everyday; meal planning doesn’t have to be hard!!
Tips:
Make time to find recipes Whether it’s creating what suits you, looking on Instagram for inspo, or watching youtube videos, always set aside a time to plan out what you need to buy and how it’s made. This saves up a lot more time in the long run as it’s all planned out! Food Gawker is one of my top favourite recipe sites to use, available for iOS too so you can use it on the go and save anything you come across!
Start a meal calendar Meal calendars are just like normal calendars- except you put what you are going to cook and when. Colour code everything! If your goal is to eat healthier, highlight all the days where you have vegetarian meals; if you see that you have a marathon coming up in the next week or two, colour in days where you bring foods that contain high-energy.
Day themes Monday- pasta? Tuesday- breads? Wednesday- rice? The best thing about prepping your own meals means that you can bend this however you would like. Having days with themes could make your recipe planning much easier, just pick something from the same category according to the day- however if you like tacos you could eat that everyday of the month!!
Have a regular shopping day Some people prefer to meal plan for the entire month or just for a week, but with whichever option you prefer, shopping regularly is very important. If your school days are from Monday to Friday, shop for enough groceries on the weekend to minimalise trips to the store again. Out Of Milk for android users is an app to create shopping lists that categorises the type of food (dairy, veggies, etc)
Set a budget Cannot ! Stress ! This ! Enough ! Give yourself a limit to how much money you’re going to spend on buying the ingredients. Always look in your fridge before going shopping so you know what you have and don’t already need to buy!! One of the easiest ways to keep track on your expenses are to use an app: Monny and Pocket Expense are both great apps to categorise the money you spend and to set a (daily/weekly/monthly) budget on the go. Having an app to record everything seems to be the quickest option for a student (and they’re free!) but if you prefer to write it down by hand then that’s cool too (゜∀゜)!!!
Don’t over plan Finding cool recipes can be super exciting BUT be aware about how long the meals take to make. Don’t go for recipes that take 2 hours prep + 5 hour cook time just for one lunch’s worth of food. Leave out days for improvisation or grab lunch once in a while instead if you have a really busy schedule- don’t guilt yourself just because you can’t make lunch every single day!
Know your level of cooking How well do you cook? If your answer is not very well, thats okay! Culinary skills aren’t required to make your own lunch, however it would make your life much much easier to pick something you can make and would like to eat.
Preparing meals (week prep) For those of you who don’t mind eating the same meal everyday for a week, then preparing and cooking all meals on Sunday night would be ideal. There are two ways you can prepare: - Cook the meal as normal but for 5 portions (Mon-Fri, or however many days you are planning to eat it for) and store each portion in separate containers for each day. - Cutting, chopping, measuring and putting the ingredients into portions (in boxes or bags or however you want to keep it) to cook it every night for the next day. This ensures freshness but still saving all the prep time as you do it in advance! This does require some cooking but it’s definitely more efficient than doing the entire process per day.
Preparing meals (daily prep) You may have to find time each night to prepare if you prefer to eat something different everyday. Although it sounds very time consuming, I suggest to plan out recipes, gather all ingredients needed for all the meals, and sort out the amount of each ingredient needed for each meal on the weekend. Weekdays might be hectic and tiring when you get home afterschool, and finding the time to cut and prepare daily might start to become a chore, resulting in a lack of motivation to stay in plan.
Have fun!!
Here is a list of recipe ideas for school !!!
Hope this helped with your meal planning ~~!! ゚・:*。(ꈍᴗꈍ)ε`*)~。*:・゚

Requested by @diyaanat
So, this one is for adding the assignments you do during the month, write down the due dates, fill the progress bar, include the grade you got and calculate how much of the percentage you have for every assignment and for the end of that month.
You can also give a color for each assignment and add the colors to the mini calendar on the right.
I included a little guide to use it on the subfolder.
I hope this one is useful!

Foolproof Guide to School Success!
Hi! I just finished my first year of college and I definitely have to credit the studyblr community for all the useful information and tips! I currently closed the year with a 4.0 and don’t plan on stopping!
In high school I was an ok student but I decided to change all that when I started college. So, whether you’re in high school or college, it’s never late to change and attain academic excellence! So here are my tips!
Try to get an early start on your day and sit closest to the front as possible. Studies show that sitting in the front of class will improve your grades and knowledge!
A study showed that those who sat in the front achieved an average of 80% while those in the middle achieved an average of 71.6% on their exams. And guess who did even worse.. unfortunately those in the back scored an average of 68.1%
Distractions are decreased because there’s no one sitting in front of you, just the lecture which basically forces you to pay attention.
This increases the likelihood of your professor getting to know you. Why is that important? Well, in an accounting course I once took, I sat in the front, attended extra tutoring sessions hosted by that instructor, and generally put in extra effort in the class. By the end of the semester everyone was really struggling, over 20 students flunked out, and even my tips weren’t getting me to that A I wanted. Well, because I had established who I was and that I was serious about the class, my instructor bumped my final course grade from an 88% to 93%! She said she noticed the effort I put in so she gave me the grade she thought I deserved
Seriously, sit in the front!!
Ok, now that you have a good spot in the class, make sure you take great notes! The Cornell notes system is great but do whatever works best for you.
Abbreviate often
Date your notes at the top so you can order them chronologically. This will make studying a breeze later on.
Find a color coding system that works for you. Highlight main ideas and vocab.
Find a notebook that works for you. I was lucky enough to score 20 moleskines at my local thrift store at 1 dollar a piece so I’ve been using those.
If you prefer loose leaf paper, buy a bunch and stick it into a flexible binder so you can organize and reorganize your paper.
Use post-its and sticky tabs to add extra info that you might have left out during class. Use sticky tabs to find certain notes faster.
These are some of my favorite note taking supplies:
These Pilot G-Tec pens are some of my favorite pens ever! They are super smooth and the lines are really fine. This 5 pack costs around $11 which is pretty affordable!
Mead notebooks are a classic staple. Seriously these are super durable!
These sticky post-it tab hybrids work really well for marking a page and highlighting important info.
Mildliners are really nice and the colors are not to bright. A pack runs around $7 and a 3 pack is $15 on Amazon.
If you want to go the extra mile, retyping up your notes is a great idea. That way your in class notes can be messy and it won’t matter since you’re going to type them up anyway. One Note is awesome for notes.
I developed my own system for deciding on how I will study and how often I will study. It goes something like this:
Rank your classes in order of difficulty into three sections:
Easy, medium, and hard….
Easy classes get one point
Medium classes get two points
Hard classes get three points
Is the class math related? ….. add 2 points
Is it science related? …… add 2 points
Is the class a subject that you struggle with? ….. add 3 points
is the class AP? ……… 3 points
Add up the points for each class.
Classes with 1-3 points:
these classes are generally easy and have an easy instructor, contain info you already know, etc.
These classes get 45 minutes a day in your schedule and minimal studying on weekends.
Classes with 4-8 points:
These classes might need some more effort so try to…
Set aside an hour a day and 30 minutes on weekends.
Classes with 9 points and up:
These classes are usually more intense, have daily assignments, have a strict instructor, etc.
Set 2 hours a day and an hour or more on weekends. Consider going to free tutoring provided by your school, join a study group, or go to your instructor’s office hours.
Plan your months, weeks, and days in advance! Keep a planner, calendar, or bullet journal. I personally use a bullet journal and keep a calendar printable in each binder I have for my classes.
Include due dates, exam dates, when your rentals are due, etc.
Look at it everyday!!! That way you won’t forget important events.
If you want to, make it pretty! Decorate it with stickers, pictures, polaroids, etc. to make it more personal.
If you prefer minimalism, keep a simple planner or bullet journal system.
If an electronic system works better for you, go for it! But I’ve noticed that writing it on paper works best!
Here are some great planners or journals to use:
Moleskines are always a great choice!
This hardcover Yoobi journal is comparable to the Moleskine and comes in pretty colors! The price is awesome, each one runs at $6!
Bando makes super pretty and trendy planners. They run from $20 and can get pricey though. It’s definitely worth it though!
This Sugar Paper gold polka dot planner is really cute and super affordable!
The AT-A-GLANCE planner has a monthly view and daily sections with plenty of room for writing in important dates and decorating with cute stuff!
Kikki K has amazing planners. If you want to splurge consider their stuff. I’ve always wanted one but it’s around the price of a textbook :(
While Studyblr has so many resources and tips, in case you haven’t noticed, a lot of the pretty pictures use muji pens, staedtler fineliners, and those cute lil’ backpacks. Remember that you have to use supplies that work with you. Here are the essentials to carry with you:
Notebooks and binders
A sturdy and comfy backpack. I use the Borealis backpack by The North Face on discount. Make sure it has comfortable straps, back support, enough room for all your stuff, and compartments for your food and water bottle.
A phone charger. Keep it in your backpack. My phone has died on me so many times and it sucks, especially if you have to take the bus. Invest in a portable charger.
Earbuds are a must, especially if you take public transportation. Also great for when you’re at the library, gym, etc.
As previously mentioned, a water bottle and FOOD! Pack a lunch but also have backup snacks like granola bars or nuts. You need food and water for energy.
Keep extra change. You never know when you need it!!
Your planner.
Pens, pencils, etc. Especially a stapler if you have homework that you regularly turn in!! Its really awk when someone doesn’t have a stapler and everyone in the class doesn’t either..
A laptop, seriously a must! Chromebooks are affordable!
Hope that’s helpful! Looking forward to another year in college and staying in the Studyblr community,
Thania
this is fucked up. this fucked me up. the teachers fucked up by not showing us this fuck up. fuck.
dear god
i’m 28 and never knew this
MATH!
With all that work required to draw the lines, you could just multiply the damn thing.
Now I need to know WHY this works.
Isn’t this the multiplication the Japanese way!? I will be multiplying this way on the MCAT!
