cute couple things i’ve seen on campus this semester that make me want a stupid boyfriend

girl and guy were sitting on the same chair with the guy behind her only he was hugging her waist and fast asleep on her shoulder while she was working on her computer

saw this couple across the street from me waiting for the bus. the guy did the thing where he pretends to look for something in his bag and pulls out a finger heart instead

in the hallway i watched this girl run up to her bf and he gives her the biggest hug and goes “see told you you’d kill your presentation” then kisses her forehead

girl sitting next to me in the library has been grinding on an assignment all day (like i’d have been in the library from 10-3 with breaks in between for classes but she’d been sitting there the whole time) and her boyfriend would come in every few hours, put down food or coffee on her table, kiss the top of her head, and walk away without a word

in one of my smaller classes (probably around 30 people) this guy’s phone rang and he sprung up and left the class to answer it. usually profs don’t care if you leave class but this one is really small and he knows all of our names/faces, so when the guy comes back in the prof asks if everything was ok. he has the biggest grin on his face and says “yeah, sorry that was my girlfriend. her flight took off right before it started snowing so i was worried. she’s okay tho.”

was sitting outside and reading when it was warmer and i could see this couple sitting under a tree a little ways away from me. the girl was laying in his lap while he was on his phone. suddenly i heard an alarm go off so i look up and they start switching places so now he’s laying his head on her lap and she’s reading sitting up. it happened twice more after that

Do you have any advice for learning Japanese? (Sorry, unsure if it was asked before) It’s hard to find a way to start when self-learning, but I was wondering if you have any textbooks or resources you recommend? Thank you!

I feel like everyone has their own individual approaches to learning languages, so if you have learned another language before on your own, you should try to apply that to Japanese.

That being said, I consider grammar to be the most fundamental portion of a language. Tae Kim’s Grammar Guide is a godsend, and while it is not exhaustive, it’s a great reference tool even now if I don’t trust myself.

For those who prefer learning from textbooks, it would be a shame if someone uploaded the entirety of Genki 1 + 2 with additional resources. We can’t have anybody going around pirating things here. Ha. Ha. Ha.

Once you’ve reached a level where you’re comfortable with reading basic texts, I’d recommend just diving into reading as much as possible to build kanji and vocabulary. Flashcards and memorization have never worked for me, and I think it’s valuable to see how native speakers use words and sentence structures in context to give yourself a more natural understanding.

Speaking and listening practice is best done in person, especially with those who are native speakers in order to avoid picking up bad habits. Social anxiety incapacitates my ability to speak, so I don’t have very much advice here for you. Sorry.

My teacher once recommended to “think in Japanese”, which essentially means to attempt to craft your sentences in Japanese first, as opposed to thinking of what you want to say in English and then trying to translate to Japanese. This will make your speech and writing sound much more natural and fluent. It’s challenging, and I still struggle with this a good deal, but I’ve found that reading or listening to something in Japanese first can help make your brain switch over to the correct language.

The funniest version of this is when you work in a haunted house

I was super bored one night bc we were really slow, and the animatronic that served as my cue had broken without my knowing, so I didn’t get an alert that someone was coming.

I was in the hallway singing “Peanut Butter Jelly Time” at the top of my lungs and jumping up and down in the hallway. The guy in the next hallway over was singing it with me. I don’t know what he was doing but knowing him, it was equally goofy.

So imagine being a teenager girl and her teenage boyfriend, coming down a dark and spooky hallway filled with fog, and finding a small demonic-looking thing jumping like a madman, shouting “PEANUT BUTTER JELLY TIME” at the top of its lungs with the voice of a twelve year old boy, and hearing a deep, booming voice repeating it back.
