No more wondering when you shared a video or who sent you a specific video. Now you can see the most recent activity for a given video by tapping the row on the video list.

Advanced Video Recorder and Player options for Elite members

Capture only what you need by pausing and resuming as many times as you want during a recording session. Place multiple timers anywhere on the Slow Motion Video Player to measure specific segments in your recording. Timers will also appear in any reviews that you create. These advanced features along with all existing Elite features are available to Elite members.

Less hassle with instant sharing

Instantly share swings with your golfers after recording: Tag the player and check their name in “Who can see this video” so they can watch what you worked on without you having to remember to manually share videos after your lesson. Default behavior is not to instantly share, so make sure to check the golfer’s name if you want to send them the video.

Engage and retain your golfers using Team

When you add golfers to your team and they join Ubersense, you will be added to their team list and they will automatically follow you. Now you can both share swings and exchange comments with one tap instead of manually typing email addresses.

Help golfers and expand your client base via followers

Browse the Community to explore swings from other golfers who are looking for help. Leave them tips to demonstrate your expertise and build a follower base. Engage your followers by sharing drills and tips visible in their feed and optionally expand your business through video coaching lessons.

Browse the Community to explore swings, drills and comments from golfers and coaches around the world. Check their profiles and follow those you think provide helpful videos or tips and comments. As you follow more people you curate your own personal list of experts and you can watch just their videos via the Community “My Feed”.

Buy Online Video Lessons

With version 4.0 we are launching a new program where you can purchase a video lesson with a personalized swing analysis. Select coaches in the Community Drills section have a “Buy Lesson” option on their profile which enables you to purchase a lesson from that coach. When you purchase a lesson, the coach will appear in the share dialog under “Remote Coaching” and you then can share one of your swings with them. The coach will analyze your swing in Ubersense and respond with a video lesson containing specific feedback and tips. Both you and the coach can have a follow-up conversation via comments and you can purchase additional lessons to continue your improvement.

Coach of the Week: Brent Pourciau of Top Velocity

Each week Ubersense showcases a coach or athlete of the Ubersense community who we think our users and everyone else would like to meet. This week, we’re talking with Bent Pourciau, pitching coach of USA Certified Weightlifting performance coach. Brent is the owner and operator of TopVelocity.net and helps baseball pitchers around the country increase their velocity.

It seems like that rotator cuff tear at 18 was a pivotal moment in your life -- could you tell us a bit about that time? How did you overcome that injury? It was the most pivotal time in my life. I went from a rising star in the game of baseball to a damaged pitcher who doctors told he would never play again in my first college appearance. I never was the same again. I was 18 at the time so you could imagine this kind of adversity at that young of an age. I went into a depression and if it wasn’t for a great support team in my family and friends I would have struggled a lot longer and probably would have given up. They helped me realize in that moment of my career I could either do two things; quit like the doctors where telling me too or bite the bullet and go full tilt at figuring out what caused this injury and challenge myself to overcome it. I had discovered an old saying when I was making this decision on my future and that saying was, “Where there is a Will There is a Way.” I knew I had the will and if that was enough to show me the way then I knew my decision, I took the challenge. From that point on I have worked to master the art of pitching at the elite level. It first started with redeveloping my body to a peak performance level and then gaining an elite level of pitching mechanics which forced me to carve my own road due to the lack of knowledge in this game. Not only did I get my arm back and was able to play some college baseball again but I continued after college to improve my performance and got my fastball to 94mph. I could sit 91-92mph which got me drafted into professional independent baseball at 26 years old. I was now living the dream and getting to play against my ideals like Jose Canseco. It wasn’t the Bigs but it was a professional level which made me feel like I had not only overcome this career ending injury but got to live a bit of my baseball dreams. What made the fastball become your area of expertise?  I focus on the fastball because I learned quickly in my career that the fastball is what always takes you to the next level. There is a ton more to pitching than pitching velocity but it is always the key to the next level. I would have been a better pitcher in pro ball if I would have developed more than a fastball but I only had enough time to develop the 90+ fastball post surgery. If I would have discovered this level of information a lot earlier in my career then I would have had the time to do more than just develop my fastball. I would have developed another few pitches and a better approach at the plate. This would have probably taken me farther but without my relentless work on developing my 90+ fastball I would have never made it out of college baseball post surgery. How have you managed to turn an online coaching tutorial into such a successful program that produces real results? I was 28 years old and was traded to Yuma, AZ which is not the easiest place to live. It is like 120 degrees at night there. I was also getting married and I couldn’t get the horrible imagine of dragging my brand new wife through the grind of minor league baseball. I also knew it was going to take a ton more work to get myself into the Bigs one day if it was ever going to happen. At this moment I realized I had done something that most people had never done and develop a program along the way. I had overcome major rotator surgery to not only pitch again but at almost 10mph harder. My grandfather was a famous football coach and I always looked up to him and felt I had a lot in common with him. I always had this feeling that I would be a good coach one day as well, so I decided that this was probably the best time to make this transition. I had a good feeling that the information that I had gained and the unconventional approach that I had developed to overcome this career ending injury needed to get out to the public, so it could help others in similar situations as myself. In 2008 I launched the 3X Pitching Velocity Program and it just took off. I have to credit Google for its popularity because without the exposure of this search engine no one would have known it existed. I also have to created the poor level of pitching knowledge in this game because just with a little effort to figure these high velocity movements out, using the latest science, I was able to put together a program that far exceeded the information you could find in most pitching books in book stores at the time. When I first launched the program online I didn’t even put my name on it because I felt no one would want to know that I just played indy ball but this didn’t matter. The information was different, unconventional and very effective which was enough to excite the baseball community. I say very effective because the first few pitchers that went through the program had just about the same results as I did in a shorter amount of time. This is when I knew I had something special! Mitchel Sewald went from 10 innings his junior year in high school at 82mph to 94mph in one summer on the program and signed with LSU before his senior year. Josh Favaloro left his first high school because they told him he would never play to his new high school and in one summer went from 78mph to 90mph. He broke their strikeout record that season and signed a college scholarship. Daniel Pitfield was cut every year in high school and his 2nd year in college he went through the program from 78mph-88mph and signed a college scholarship. I also had several guys drafted after coming through the 3X programs and tons more with similar stories as my first round of pitchers. This has all happened in less than 6 years of coaching these programs. 4 years ago I started running the camps and sense then I have attracted the University of Georgia, Central Arkansas, many more D1s, D2s and Naia organizations. I am also now working with a Major League team implementing the 3X Pitching approach within the organization. What do you think is the most important focus for someone looking to improve their pitching velocity? You cannot ignore the fact that speed and power is what drives the elite levels of this game and elite speed and power must be developed. Once this speed and power is developed then you must learn how to mechanically put it into the ball but without the speed and power, good mechanics have a little effect on pitching velocity. The 3X Pitching Velocity Program uses an Olympic Style approach to speed and power which is the same program I used and I have trained with for over 15 years. It is by far the best way to develop elite speed and power and the 3X Pitching Mechanics are by far the best system for converting this elite speed and power into pitching velocity. Your advertising guarantees the opportunity for an athlete to reach his pitching goals, not the goals themselves. Is that leaving space for hard work and dedication to pay off? Everyone has their own pitching velocity goals. They have a certain two digit or even three digit number that they want to achieve. I want to help them through the 3X Pitching Velocity Program to achieve it. As much as I could say I want to get you to 90 and I do say this a lot but that may not be the number they are looking for. You call pitching practice without the use of video technology “pitching blind.” What do you think are the most substantial benefits of video analysis? Pitching mechanics are what not only allow you to convert your elite speed and power to pitching velocity but they help you with locating your pitches consistently and keeping your arm healthy. You will never have a significant effect on changing your pitching mechanics if you cannot see them for yourself. You may feel like you are doing something a certain way but rarely are you actually doing it that way. Once you see it on video then it makes perfect sense. The pitching delivery also occurs in less than 1 second in the high velocity pitcher. How can a coach provide feedback to what he is seeing without the ability to slow it down on video? This is impossible and it is lazy coaching that will only make pitchers worse. It is important to note as well just because you have the ability to slow the pitching delivery down through the Ubersense app doesn’t mean you know what to look for and what needs to be changed. This is why you need a skilled coach in the game of pitching. This is why my business has grown to the level it has. What is your favorite Ubersense feature?  I like how Ubersense immediately shares the video with the student I am analyzing once I have his email associated with his video and vice versus. This keeps me more connected with the student which is critical because the more time that goes by the more the student can get off target. Anything else you’d like to add? Brandon Scherff is really strong

University of Iowa Football Strength Coach Chris Doyle tweeted out a video today of offensive tackle Brandon Scherff Cleaning 443 pounds for three reps.

The 6'5 320 pound Scherff is a projected 1st round pick in 2015. There has even been talk that he could potentially go #1 overall. Scherff obviously has incredible strength, but his athleticism is often overlooked. He played quarterback in High School, while also competing in basketball, baseball and tennis. Coach of the Week: Brody Welte of PaddleFit

This week, we’re talking with Brody Welte, who, after some time in Hawaii, returned to the mainland and created Stand Up Fitness: a paddleboard company in Florida. Brody has expanded and rerouted his business into PaddleFit, a SUP fitness and certification company which has taken the country by storm with its fun outdoor fitness! I read that you had a life changing job in the beautiful outdoors in Hawaii. Can you tell us a bit about that time in your life? Did you find the inspiration that led you to craft the idea of fun paddle board fitness? I have always been motivated by opportunities instead of money. So my decisions are based on taking advantage of any opportunity that comes along. So I had the opportunity to relocate to Hawaii for a job. My title was “Island Host” and my duties were to show guests what the island of Kauai had to offer. This included hiking, mountain biking, zip lining and stand up paddling (SUP). So Hawaii is where I learned to SUP. I can still remember my first time and it was both challenging and exciting and that was when the light bulb came on and where the idea of PaddleFit was born. To basically combine outdoor fitness with SUP. 2. How does PaddleFit help athletes and coaches keep the “fun” in fitness? Less than 5% of all our clients are professional athletes so the other 95% are with us because that want to get healthy and enjoy the process. So the best part about SUP is that it is inherently fun. So our main focus is to teach people the fundamentals of paddling and to keep them safe so that they can enjoy all aspects of SUP and using SUP to fulfill their health and fitness goals. While teaching people the fundamentals does not sound like fun, it is amazing how it helps gives our clients confidence to be able to go and explore and break down barriers to achieve their goals. We pass this philosophy on to our coaches through our educational program. 3. You’ve managed to expand PaddleFit from Florida to California, Canada, and beyond! What makes PaddleFit such a unique, successful program? The first thing is how we at PaddleFit define success, it is not about money, it is not about how big we can get. Success to us comes down to one simple question that we ask ourselves on a moment by moment basis. Are we positively impacting those people that we come into contact with? For us at PaddleFit corporate this means how we train and interact with the coaches that are coming into our system. And this gets passed on to them so that the real winner is the clients. When you truly care about those that you come into contact with, it becomes infectious and our coaches are passing this on. So our growth is directly tied to how much we care about the client. We understand that the only way that we have a job is if we make sure that every client has the best experience that we can provide. 4. What are your goals for the future? More expansion? Great questions. I sometimes get in trouble because my mind always seems to be 3 to 5 years down the road. I am always thinking about the future and how we can become better. The first thing that we are doing is expanding into other countries. We already have trips planned to Central America, Australia and New Zealand and we will move into Europe for 2015 and soon after South America. Also in the works is a kids program. It is very important as an industry that we take care of the kids. We need to keep the sport accessible, fun and safe for the kids so that they grow up and become ambassadors for the sport. I have been working on the kids program for a while and we are hopeful to launch it in the next 12 months. After that we are working on a performance program that has been in the works for a couple of years and will continue to be refined. We are working with the top professional athletes in our sport right now at PaddleFit corporate in San Diego but we want to pass this info on to our coaches through our performance program. 5. On your blog, you say that, at PaddleFit, you are “coaches not instructors.” This seems like something that is rather unique to PaddleFit — can you expand upon that statement? This is your best question and I believe that this sets us apart from all of the other companies out there. In my mind I have negative images of an instructor, it is either someone who is condescending towards me, focused more on themselves, treats me like a number or someone who just barks out instruction. However, when I think of a coach I have an images of someone who challenges me but is also concerned about my overall wellbeing. So we instill in our coaches that we need to care about the overall wellbeing of our clients. A wise person once told me that your clients don’t care how much you know, they want to know how much you care. This is our vision of a coach and we live by that philosophy. 6. It is amazing to see that you and your 900+ certified coaches incorporate Ubersense into PaddleFit. How do you accomplish this? Right now we use Ubersense with our level 2 and 3 coaches. In level 3 we have them download the app and walk through using the video analysis app. We use them as examples to show how it works and we started to catalogue all of our coaches so that we can track their progress. This gives them the opportunity to see it in action and be able to use Ubersense with their clients. Once again our motivation is to provide the best experience possible to the end user, our clients. 7. Do you have any tips for other coaches when it comes to using video analysis in sports? Yes I do. Two things. 1st is that the the video analysis should reinforce and confirm the information that you have already shown your client. If you are discussing new info with your clients through video analysis, it will become confusing and will lose some of its impact. We use video analysis to put into pictures the items that we worked on in person and to give them “homework” that we discussed so they can refer back to it. The second thing is that the video analysis doesn’t replace good coaching or should not take the place of good client relations. I see too many “coaches” just want to send clients a workout or a standard training program with the main focus being on residual revenue. I understand the importance of residual revenue but it shouldn’t take the place or diminish good client care. So again, make sure that your video analysis has a specific purpose and the main goal is to make your client better. We are working with the top professional athletes in our sport right now at PaddleFit corporate in San Diego but we want to pass this info on to our coaches through our performance program. 5. On your blog, you say that, at PaddleFit, you are “coaches not instructors.” This seems like something that is rather unique to PaddleFit -- can you expand upon that statement? This is your best question and I believe that this sets us apart from all of the other companies out there. In my mind I have negative images of an instructor, it is either someone who is condescending towards me, focused more on themselves, treats me like a number or someone who just barks out instruction. However, when I think of a coach I have an images of someone who challenges me but is also concerned about my overall wellbeing. So we instill in our coaches that we need to care about the overall wellbeing of our clients. A wise person once told me that your clients don’t care how much you know, they want to know how much you care. This is our vision of a coach and we live by that philosophy. 6. It is amazing to see that you and your 900+ certified coaches incorporate Ubersense into PaddleFit. How do you accomplish this? Right now we use Ubersense with our level 2 and 3 coaches. In level 3 we have them download the app and walk through using the video analysis app. We use them as examples to show how it works and we started to catalogue all of our coaches so that we can track their progress. This gives them the opportunity to see it in action and be able to use Ubersense with their clients. Once again our motivation is to provide the best experience possible to the end user, our clients. 7. Do you have any tips for other coaches when it comes to using video analysis in sports? Yes I do. Two things. 1st is that the the video analysis should reinforce and confirm the information that you have already shown your client. If you are discussing new info with your clients through video analysis, it will become confusing and will lose some of its impact. We use video analysis to put into pictures the items that we worked on in person and to give them “homework” that we discussed so they can refer back to it. The second thing is that the video analysis doesn’t replace good coaching or should not take the place of good client relations. I see too many “coaches” just want to send clients a workout or a standard training program with the main focus being on residual revenue. I understand the importance of residual revenue but it shouldn’t take the place or diminish good client care. So again, make sure that your video analysis has a specific purpose and the main goal is to make your client better. Instant Replay in Sports: Helpful or Excessive?

This blog post was largely inspired by our watching Wimbledon and the World Cup while we work here at Ubersense. The tennis played at Wimbledon and the soccer played at the World Cup operate around slightly different ideologies with respect to the presence of technology in their respective arenas, but it seems that they both fall on the conservative side of the spectrum. One of the largest tenets that proponents of these technological advancements claim is the added value of increased fairness. Life isn’t fair -- we all know this. But sports seek to make it a bit fairer. While it is clear that tennis racquets have changed vastly from their wooden counterparts of the mid 1900’s, tennis was strictly a “no replay” sport until rather recently. Wimbledon introduced the technology known as Hawk Eye in the 2007 Championships, which allows players to challenge a referee’s line call. According to Wimbledon officials, players have “unlimited challenges,” but once three incorrect challenges are made in one set, their privilege is revoked until the following set begins (except in the case of a tie-break, where additional challenges are rewarded). Hawk Eye’s credibility has been criticized as of late in arguments over the accuracy to the millimeter, but it remains respected overall. This technology seems like a good improvement, as it takes minimal time, adds excitement for the crowd, and allows players to feel like they are being represented. A member of the Hawk Eye team, however, has speculated that entire tennis tournaments could soon be played without a single umpire. Tennis legend turned commentator John McEnroe said that this could be “unbelievable for tennis” as it would make the game “30 percent more interesting.” I’m skeptical. Do you agree with Johhny Mac? [caption id="attachment_4939" align="aligncenter" width="512"] CC image courtesy of Ian Munroe on Flickr[/caption] Soccer, too, has seen little change over the years with respect to video technology. Of course, equipment has improved, but the tried and true methods of leaving the calls to be made on the pitch by the referee in real time have remained. This year’s FIFA World Cup in Brazil has equipped the stadiums with a technology entitled GoalControl, which, like Hawk Eye, relies on a system of high-speed, high-resolution cameras positioned around the arena. GoalControl enables the position of the ball to be realized in a real-time, 3D image. The best part? Once GoalControl determines that the ball has in fact entered the net and a goal has been scored, the goal is confirmed immediately via watches on each referee’s wrist. This technology is not interruptive, does not delay the game, and given the gravity of each goal in a soccer match, it is a very useful tool in making the game fairer. While tennis and soccer have rather unintrusive technologies, other sports leagues have hefty delays with heavy replay amounts. Some people, like NBC Sports author Joe Posnanski, believe that the added instant replay - like that in football, baseball, hockey, etc - takes away from the tradition and immediacy of sport. Posnanski humorously speculates about how instant replay takes away the certainty of the game: “Does anyone really know anymore what constitutes a catch in pro football? Seems like you have to catch the ball, get two feet in bounds, hold it through completion of the play, refuse to give it back to the officials, carry it with you to dinner that night.” He, like many other fans, prefers, despite a few erroneous calls, a game “beats and breaths in real time.” He says that “now, with replay, the catch is an abstract concept, like justice or infinity or what it is to be a Kardashian.” Posnanski would likely appreciate the statement from Sepp Blatter of FIFA that international soccer “would not go down the instant-replay rabbit hole.” Instead, he prefers to “let it be as is and let’s leave it with errors. The television companies will have the right to say (the referee) was right wrong. But still, the referee makes the decision.” So, what do you Ubersensers think? How far should video technology be allowed to expand? Do you think the value of tradition is more important than that of supposed fairness?

Coach of the Week: Former Pro Tennis Player Amer Delic

Each week we like to highlight a coach or athlete from the Ubersense community.  Today we are talking to former NCAA Champion and Professional Tennis Player Amer Delic. 1) How did you get started playing tennis? As a kid, I used to get sick all the time. My parents thought it would be a good idea for me to exercise and hopefully get little bit stronger. My options were soccer or tennis. My dad's work friends had kids that were playing tennis. One day he showed up with a gift for me and it was a wooden tennis racket (this was in 1988 when graphites were already in full use.) Next day I was signed up for tennis at the only club in our city (Tennis Club "Sloboda" -- which when translated means "Freedom.") 2) You had a fantastic collegiate career at Illinois winning several national titles. How did that help prepare you for turning pro? I was very fortunate to be surrounded with some amazing tennis minds before and during college. As a refugee, my family ended up in Jacksonville, FL which was about 20 minutes away from the ATP Headquarters in Ponte Vedra Beach. At the time Todd Martin, Malivai Washington, Brian Gottfried and Ricardo Acuna were all still training or coaching there. I was picked out among the kids in Jacksonville to be a part of their academy. All of those guys had great techniques and were great with transferring the knowledge to others. Once I got to college, Craig Tiley was all about the shadow swings and visual learning. We had mirrors by our courts so we can shadow swing before/during/after practice. We would also do stroke analysis using the VCR tapes and later DVDs. At the time Craig (Tiley) was light years ahead of the other coaches because of that. 3) What is your favorite tennis playing memory? I was fortunate that I got to play all over the world, including all the Grand Slams, Rod Laver Arena, Arthur Ashe stadium, etc... However, two memories will alway stick out more than others. 1. Winning the 2003 Team NCAA Championships --- absolutely amazing experience. Few days later I won the individual championship, which opened up the doors for my professional career, however, winning the team title and sharing it with all the guys, coaches, families absolutely takes the cake! 2. Playing the Davis Cup in my hometown (Tuzla, BIH) --- my grand parents, uncles and cousins never got to watch me play in person. This was their first time ever seeing me hit a ball since before the war started in 1992. There were close to 5,000 other Bosnians there to cheer us on to a victory. Amazing. 4) Who is the toughest opponent you’ve faced and why? I got to play Novak Djokovic twice during my career. Once at Wimbledon and once during the Australian Open. Both times the scores were identical, with me losing 76 in the 4th set. I felt like I played some good tennis both times, but Novak's returns and movement put so much pressure on you. You start going for low percentage shots in order to win points. Both times I ran out of ammunition! 5) How were you able to make the transition into coaching after your retirement? Where are you coaching currently? In 2012, at a tournament right before Wimbledon, I tore my MCL on my left knee, which was the same knee where I tore my patella in 2009. While waiting in London for my swelling to come down, I was contacted by University of Florida for a possible Assistant Coaching position. At the time I was still planning on going back on the tour and playing again, however, frustrations with all the injuries and inability to train fully were also were draining. Therefore I took the position and absolutely loved every aspect of it. I got to work with some very good tennis players at an amazing University alongside Bryan Shelton who I greatly respected. Transition was easy to me because I enjoyed helping others get the best possible experience on and off the court. After a year, I had to move to Austin, TX where I got married and am currently working with a range of players all the way from 8 year olds to college and pro-players, specializing in one on one work. 6) Last year you were named captain of the Bosnia and Herzegovina Davis Cup team. What are your responsibilities as captain? Being named a Davis Cup captain was/is a huge honor for me. I believe that this is absolutely the best platform for me in helping top players from Bosnia achieve success on the professional level, while also overseeing the junior development for future generations. 7) How do you think technology is helping or hurting the sport of tennis? Personally, I believe that racket technology is hurting the proper development of younger players. Rackets are so powerful, causing young players to get away with bad techniques. Unfortunately, these same kids, along with their parents get so caught up in the results that they ignore the big picture. These same kids, by the time they are 16-17, still have the bad technical foundations, causing them to break down more often in pressure situations against better competition. They never took time to focus on the process in the beginning. On the other hand, many other technological advances, such as video analysis tools, better strings, HawkEye, etc have advanced the game to a whole new level, making the top product that much better. 8) What ways to you use video analysis in your coaching and training? I use Ubersense mostly for stroke analysis and some strategy analysis. Most of the players, including myself, are visual learners. Every kid that I have worked with has responded much better through this teaching technique. Its even more important at the initial stages of teaching, because kids are most likely to see something then repeat it, rather than listen to something than try and digest all the information/terminology. 9) This week marks the start of Wimbledon. What was your experience like playing there? Wimbledon is an amazing experience. I only got to play it 4 times during my career, but each and every time I had to pinch myself when I walked on those grounds. Growing up as a refugee in two different countries, I never thought that the game of tennis would open up so many doors for me. It was a great feeling knowing that I earned my way. 10) Any predictions for this year’s Wimbledon Championships? I havent fully studied the draws just yet, but I would like to see Roger Federer win at least one more. I think it would be great for the game.

The Newest Technology Trends in Coaching

Historically speaking, the majority of sports and coaches have been reluctant adopters of new and emerging technology. Just look at how long it has taken many professional sports leagues to adopt instant replay into officiating. However, we believe that the tides are beginning to change as the technology becomes more accessible and convenient. At Ubersense we have the unique perspective of being at the forefront of both sports, coaching and mobile technology. Speaking and interacting with hundreds of coaches, instructors and teachers around the Globe has given us the opportunity to observe many of the tools, technology and trends that will becoming increasingly popular in the world of sports coaching.

Coaches must be able to work jointly to analyze game and practice film, adjust playbooks, tweak lineups and establish game plans and strategy for upcoming opponents. File sharing applications, such as Dropbox, Google Drive and others have made is much more seamless for a staff to work jointly, even from the comfort of their own homes. Video tools, like Hudl and Krossover, among others, allow coaches to work together to breakdown and annotate film, which saves huge amounts of time. These services also allow coaches from opposing teams to exchange footage to assist in scouting and game preparation. Team organization tools, like TeamSnap and AthleteTrax, can help a coach to communicate with the players and parents. This helps with scheduling, weather changes, announcements, fundraising, and any other types of alerts. Instead of having to call each and every team member a coach can easily send a mass-message to the entire team. 'Virtual' Coaching Coaches can now provide feedback to athletes from anywhere in the World. No longer are coaches or athletes restricted to physical, in-person coaching sessions. This increases the potential clients and students a coach can work with. Tools like Skype, FaceTime, YouTube and video analysis and sharing apps (like Ubersense!) allow a coach to see a performance or technique and provide feedback and tips. While nothing can replace the value and benefits of in-person coaching, the rise of ‘remote coaching’ does give athletes access to coaches they may not have been able to meet with. Aside from the geographical limitations of coaching, virtual coaching can also lower the price point and make it more affordable for athletes to receive help and coaching from the best instructors in their field. Drone Cameras We’ve seen some incredible and unique footage captured by drones. The ability to get a complete view of the field and control the flight of the drone provides a valuable POV for coaches to review. This is especially valuable in sports with many athletes on the field at a time, like football and soccer. There is also a potential use in action sports, like Snowboarding and Skiing, where it can be difficult to record quality footage on foot. The Sport Specialization Debate | Why your child should play multiplesports

The ultra-competitive landscape of youth and amateur sports today has led to many parents and athletes asking the question of whether they should focus on just one sport. With dreams of college scholarships, Olympic medals and professional ambitions many believe that by focusing and practicing on their primary sport they will be able to develop and improve their skills faster. It has been said that  it requires 10,000 hours of deliberate practice to become an expert at something. For that reason, it would appear to make sense to choose a sport and practice solely for that sport as early as possible to reach the highest skill level. While there are examples of young prodigies focusing on their craft from a very young age (see Tiger Woods for example) these examples have proved to be the exception, not the norm. Research suggests that specializing too early can have adverse affects on injury risk and skill development. David Epstein, author of ‘The Talent Code' wrote an op-ed in the New York Times which stated that hyperspecialization “can lead to serious injuries and, a growing body of sports science shows, a lesser ultimate level of athletic success.” Higher Injury Risk

CC Image courtesy of Groundhopping Merseburg on Flickr Dr. Neeru Jayanthi of Loyola University found that early sport specialization was strongly linked to injuries in youth athletes. In fact, athletes who specialized were 36% more likely to suffer injury due to overuse. Serious injury can occur in the joints, ligaments as well as stress fractures due to over training. There is also the possibility that an athlete can get mentally burnt out from exhaustion, stress, lack of motivation or boredom. Playing multiple sports also helps young athletes to improve motor skills and coordination, important skills which can translate across any sport or activity. Skill Development There is little scientific evidence to show that early specialization results in better athletic skills and success later on. A study presented by the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine (AMSSM) on Division-1 athletes at UCLA revealed that 88% had participated in 2 or 3 sports as a child. Other studies have been conducted in other sports around the world with similar results; playing multiple sports and delaying specialization often leads to better success. When should an athlete specialize?

The same study by the AMSSM showed that student-athletes at UCLA specialized on average at 15.4 years old, while non-athlete students specialized at 14.2. I asked author David Epstein what he though the ‘optimal age’ for sport specialization and he believes that athletes and parents should encourage playing multiple sports until at least the age of 12.

Coach of the Week: Triathlon coach Brian Botzman

Each week we like to highlight a coach or athlete from the Ubersense community.  Today we are talking to Brian Botzman, a.k.a 'TriCoachB' 1) Tell us a little about your background. How did you get started in coaching? I started coaching right out of high school when a running injury kept me from continuing participating at the college level. I started off volunteering and then worked my way up from Middle School assistant positions to High School Head Coaching positions. 2) Your active coaching triathlon, swimming and track & field. What are some of the challenges of coaching three different sports? One of the biggest challenges is time.  I love helping athletes of all abilities but traveling from the pool to the track and forth can be tough.  Using an app like Ubersense makes it easier for me to look over my previous sessions and figure out how to plan for upcoming practices. 3) What is your proudest coaching accomplishment? That's tough... every season brings so many great experiences.  Probably taking a boy's cross country team to States my first year as a head coach. 4) What are some of the different ways you utilize video in those different sports? I use video a lot to break down technical flaws and then comparing them to past videos to see how improvement has been made.  I love using the app now to video full races and then breaking them down with the athlete in slow motion to see how they can improve race strategy. 5) Let's focus on triathlon for a second. USA Triathlon membership has almost doubled in the last decade. Why do you think the popularity of this sport grown so much? The exposure of the Ironman and many other races on TV, combined with numerous non-profit groups like Team In Training bring thousands of new people to the sport every year.  It is so much easier to get the information needed to complete your first triathlon than it was in the 90's. 6) A lot of your swimming videos are recorded using an underwater camera. What type of equipment/accessories do you use to do this? I love using my ipad in a lifeproof case and my iphone in an optrix case w/ the monood. The ipad has a big enough screen for me to show the athlete immediately without having to hook my iphone to a TV.  Iphone and TV hookups are great when you have a team of athletes that you want to show underwater footage to.  I normally have a television at the pool everyday to give feedback to my swimmers on what they need to improve on. 7) What is your favorite feature in Ubersense? #1 favorite feature is when athletes email me their footage from anywhere in the country and then I can upload to my app to breakdown their technique.  #2 favorite feature is the organizational tool! I'm so thankful Ubersense has helped me work with so many different athletes from across the country.  I really enjoy seeing my athletes improve and the app makes it easier for me to give feedback to all my athletes in an organized fashion.

How to Improve your Baseball Swing with Video

Video analysis has become an integral aspect of hitting at the Major League level. Your frequently see hitters working before, and sometimes during, games reviewing video of their at-bats. Hitting coaches use video to identify flaws and trends in their own players as well as the opposition. These same ideas are now being applied at the amateur levels, from college all the way down to little league. The ability to show kids what their swing looks like, and even compare next to a pro is extremely beneficial. But one thing we often find is that many youth coaches do not know what to look for or point out when breaking down video of a baseball swing. We've asked a handful of seasoned baseball coaches in the Ubersense community for their input on what to look for when analyzing a swing and compiled their thoughts below. Position #1 - Launch Launch position refers to the point when the hitter's front foot is planted in the ground. This is when the hitter will begin to rotate their hips and begin moving the bat through the swing zone. Billy Hunt, baseball instructor and owner of FeartheHitter.com, says "I look for a good 'Launch position" (where thier front shoulder is when front foot hits) are they connected, and how is the exit... If all that is good contact will be good then we go to power." Brett Jaime also agreed, saying the first thing he looks for on video is "good balance and hands back when front heel compresses or goes down to the ground." Position #2 - Hip Rotation The rotation phase of the swing typically begins immediately after the launch position. According to Coach Jaime, "initial move made should be with front hip rotating open while hands stay back." Many hitting instructors look to see the hips initiating the swing, this will generate torque and power in the swing. Take a look below at Xander Bogaerts' hip rotation. Notice how he begins rotating his hips with his hands back as soon as his front foot plants. Position #3- Hand Path & Swing Plane The hands should follow the hips and drive forward through the hitting zone.

Here's a good drill from former MLB player Mel Stocker to help work on the swing path.

Position #4 - Follow Through & Finish "Top hand extension through the ball toward the pitcher rather than across the ball" says Coach Jaime. It's important to rotate all the way through and maintain a balanced posture after completing the swing.  Final Thoughts Using video to slow-down the swing and break it down into different positions is a great way for hitters and coaches to really analyze and diagnose a swing. Below is an example of a swing analysis identifying each of these positions in the swing.

Coach of the Week: Dwayne Blais of Total Package Hockey

Each week we like to highlight a coach or athlete from the Ubersense community.  Today we are talking to Dwayne Blais, Canadian Program Director of Hockey at Total Package Hockey. 1) Can you tell us a little about your background in hockey? I grew up in Northern Ontario in Canada and played my minor hockey up north. Following minor hockey I played 2 years of Jr A tier 2 in Markham ON and was fortunate to get an NCAA Division I scholarship to the University of Alabama in Huntsville. After graduating in 2001 I played 3 years in the East Coast Hockey League. 2) How did you start coaching? I began teaching power skating when I was 14 years old in Sudbury ON, from that age I continued teaching and eventually got into coaching teams in the summers when I would return from playing in the US. 3) What is 'Total Package Hockey' and what is the affiliation with the London Knights Junior team? Total Package Hockey is an on and off-ice hockey development business that focuses on developing players of all levels. We work with young players all the way to NHL players. I've been working with the London Knights since I moved to London in 2006 as there power skating instructor. Now we run all of their in season and off-season strength and conditioning, power skating, rookie camps and main camp. We've also partnered with the London Knights to form the London Knights Hockey Academy its a private school that incorporates hockey development, all of our students come to workout and skate 4 days a week during school hours. 5) What is a typical coaching/training day for you? We are on the ice anywhere from 4-8 hours a day with different groups, private sessions or teams. We also have players who are in the gym on a regular basis training throughout the season. The off-season is quite busy with anywhere from 10-14 hours a day of on and off-ice programs running. 6) How do you use video analysis? I use video analysis often with small groups or privates, it is a great tool to help players see some of their inefficiencies, it really helps them speed up the time it takes to correct their skill once they've observed themselves through video. 7) What feature of Ubersense do you use most? I really enjoy editing videos and using the voiceover to send them a copy of the skills that we are covering. I also use the side by side video to show them improvements over the course of their sessions. It is very rewarding to the players and parents to see how much players have improved during the program or even during one session. 8) Do you have any training or practice advice for young hockey players out there? We really try to stress to our players that it is very important to self analyze their skills and identify areas that they need to improve. The most important piece to a player improving is for them to realize that they need to improve. They are the ones who are in control of their body and movements and need to apply the feedback that they are getting from their coaches. It is crucial that players buy in to what they need to change and then do the work, practicing and repetitions to improve that skill.

Pause and resume video recordings - Capture what you want and nothing else.

We have improved the Video Recorder allowing you to pause and resume as many times as you want while in a recording session. This way you capture only what you need and avoid extra video. Simply tap on the timer inside the video recorder to toggle between pause and resume. It’s that simple.

Stopwatch timer - Nail your routine through precision timing.  

The video player will have a new timer tool that will let you place a timer anywhere on the video frame. Our timers come with the highest possible resolution; on an iPhone 5s you get 8 millisecond precision. Timers can be reset at any frame in the video and you can even add multiple timers to a single video. What’s cool is that timers will also appear in any reviews that you create.
