Traumatized by his encounter with Robin, Scarecrow finds himself curled up in a padded cell at Arkham. Crane is haunted by a phoenix-like beast, so distressed that the so-called “Lord of Fear” finds himself sucking his thumb in order to find some semblance of comfort.
Sometime later an orderly comes to check up on Crane, only to find the scrawny man has hung himself using his own clothes. As someone who deals with mental illness on a daily basis, this scene really struck a cord with me. Even though this suicide attempt was just a ruse, I can’t help but worry for Crane’s well being. What happens next is a little gross, but clever. Crane had toxin stored in his tooth just for this specific occasion. Now that’s thinking ahead! He leaves Arkham, quoting Robin’s own words as he escapes.
