What I find to be an interesting detail of isttvg is how technically, Maddy was more closed minded than Owen when they were younger. She was more distant bc of sorta social constructions between her and Owen, but Owen was pretty open to explore, stay over, learn about new things like the show even though she didn’t fully get it at first. And then obviously the shift when they’re older: Maddy is willing to put her life on the line to prove the impossibly unlikely nature of their reality, and Owen won’t admit what she knows is true, possibly because social constructions tell her it’s impossible, and she won’t consider that the unlikely is possible
i love this guy
All my opinions about isttvg are correct btw
I just watched the curse of cutter episode of are you afraid of the dark and the intro they said something like “some of our stories are about real people living in an unreal world” and of course I’m immediately thinking about i saw the tv glow, which could basically itself be an episode of are you afraid of the dark (not to mention the fact that owen does the telling stories by the fire, snuffing it out bit). Isabel and Tara are the reverse situation unreal people living in our real world and they’re so unreal that our world feels wrong to them. Or. It’s possible that our world was always unreal, and we’re just unlucky enough to be stuck here. Even though we’re native to the nightmare realm, that doesn’t make it any less of an unreal, unforgiving place compared to the pink opaque
I always found it strange that people don’t comment on the fact that owen isn’t even just from the pink opaque. They both seem to be from a tv land. Owen can’t help but narrate the story throughout, something she doesn’t even realize is proof of the truth. Nobody else in that world is narrating. And the fire thing that’s definitely a different tv show- but possibly the same kids channel! And then of course at the end when she has tv sounds inside her, those sound like old tv shows probably reruns they play on the kids channel like Nick at night.
It’s sorta like she didn’t know there were other shows while she was in the pink opaque, but now being in another universe, she can see the dimensionality of her universe
Also I’ll say again like. I abhor when people don’t really think of the pink opaque as a straight story about them actually being people from tv. First of all. Why wouldn’t you want to? That’s the coolest story ever. When I first realized when watching that they were tv characters stuck in a realistic world it blew my mind- I never had seen a story that creative before. Especially since it’s an emotionally heavy and serious story (like Buffy).
Second, like, why is only this movie referred to as a metaphor only and not interacted within its own textural rules. Like so many movies have themes and messages for the real world, like obsession for example, but people still take the material story seriously, they actually think about the implications of the story in world, what happens after the credits roll, and the rules of the wish. Isttvg’s world was never largely taken seriously as a place with rules- why is that?
And third, not thinking of them as actually being from tv literally is hateful, it, for lack of a better world, misgenders them. The whole point is they are not what society says they are, no matter how unlikely it may seem, it’s definitely not only their truth but the truth, and then for a viewer to say this is a just a metaphor they’re not really from tv. It’s sad.
Like, even think about how the 90s actors cameos were treated. It was not treated as if these actors represented the fact that their universe was actually from tv and that’s why these tv characters we know from our childhood appear. It was always referred to as part od the movie being simply “a love letter to the tv shows we grew up with and how we remember them”. Yes, that can be part of the message of the movie, but No I think in-universe those actual tv characters were really stuck there in the nightmare realm too! Or possibly a memory of Owen’s impacting how she’s seeing people in the nightmare realm.

I think that thing about studios searching reddit for movie ideas is a little stupid when the richer idea well is 90s anthology television, especially sci fi. Just about every outer limits 95 series episode idea can be fleshed out into a movie and given more depth. Same thing for the files in x files (from the individuals perspective, not the fbi agents). I think even more about how obsession is literally just a wish gone wrong movie and actually more specifically, there’s an episode of goosebumps where the protagonist wishes her bully “thinks she’s the best” and it’s just the plot of obsession (although, I guess I prefer the goosebumps version). Not 90s, but Jordan peeles Us being an expansion of the twilight zone episode is another example.
But really something was into the water during the 90s and early 2000s with sci fi horror shows and like. I firmly believe you can make a good movie out of any episode of one of those
remember that guy that had a single auditory hallucination that told him he had a brain tumor and the exact location and then he went to the doctor and it was fucking right
Anyone notice the the dog barks different notes of the goosebumps intro song in the third season
To be clear/ I’m very pro original season 1 dog barking the melody rather than the interlude type barks of season 3.

Talarico should just respond to the trans allegations the same way lady gaga did
Honestly everyone should respond this way, this is an evergreen post esp now post White House lawn Michelle Obama thing, this will probably keep happening more and more in politics over the next decade and I think we can still learn from Gaga
The UK gets a new prime minister just whenever. Completely random intervals
It may seem random but it’s actually not! We get a new prime minister after the previous one enters a protective chrysalis after a period of relentless eating and growing, and they then dissolve into a biological soup. They then reform into the new adult prime minister. It really beautiful to see 🥰
You know whenever I hear about protecting kids from permanent healthcare decisions I think about, in order of seriousness 1. Growth hormone for short stature dx (and for a trans sports relation, messi taking them) and how this can be done even without consent of the kid, unlike trans care 2. Circumcision 3. In vouge rn, palate expanders.
And how I can’t take that argument seriously until we’re having decades long social conversations about those things. I know the argument against this is that like altering gender is something so serious that it is in a different category. But if that’s the argument I have to say that like: so you do think hrt makes a serious impact on gender don’t you squidward
I think it’s a little funny how if they really effectively ban hrt it’s basically going to make people more phenotypically nonbinary
I can’t stop watching a family affair and I have an increasing feeling that it feels.. anti American. Or more specifically anti individualist
Compared to basically all other sitcoms where the kids essentially have their own lives and parents mostly come in to punish them
