I am begging the UK trans community and its allies to attend the Mass Lobby at Parliament on June 25th, 11am-4pm, organised by Trans Solidarity Alliance.

The new EHRC Code of Practice pushes trans people out of toilets, hospital wards, and community spaces. It normalises gender policing based on appearance and stereotypes. It becomes statutory guidance in the UK by the end of June.

Trans people are now legally their assigned gender at birth and must join gendered spaces accordingly, but if they are perceived as their lived gender, they can also be ejected from those spaces. The guidance says: either break the law, or don’t pass too well.

A mass lobby is where you invite your MP to discuss your concerns with you in-person. Ask your MP to:

Demand full parliamentary scrutiny, debate, and use their free vote on the EHRC Code of Practice.

Support any motions rejecting the EHRC guidance. As of June 4th, Labour MP Nadia Whittome has submitted a prayer motion - Early Day Motion 240.

Write to Bridget Phillipson, the Minister for Women and Equalities about our concerns

Your MP does not have to be an ally, they do not have to respond to your email for you to show up and greencard them (details below the cut.) What matters is that as many people as possible show up.

I cannot stress this enough: Showing up in person matters. It is much more effective than petitions, emails, and letters.

It is a horrible, stressful time, and I am so sorry if you're trans and live in the UK. But I was at last year's mass lobby and the line for greencarding alone stretched around the back gates. It was a record breaking mass lobby and made us impossible to ignore. Let's do even better this time. Details under the cut:

Worried about what to say? Bring your personal worries about transphobia being signed into law, and trans friends being excluded from public spaces. You are a living person who deserves dignity. Remind your MP of that. You will also get guidance and brochures from Trans Solidarity Alliance that outlines our demands. This is mine from last year.

Money issues? Trans Solidarity Alliance provides a travel bursary that you can sign up for via the link.

Got a refusal or no response from your MP?  Come anyway! You can request a same-day appointment with your MP through a process called greencarding. They will come and see you if they’re already in Parliament. Even if they don’t, they’re made acutely aware of your cause because you showed up in person. This is my greencard from last year.

Here is the EHRC Code of Practice in full. It's a tough read, but some highlights are:

Organisations can’t provide trans-inclusive, single-sex services, or they risk being sued for discrimination. e.g. domestic violence support for women including trans women, men’s rugby group including trans men (12.68).

Trans people will have nowhere safe to pee. If you’re a trans man, businesses can't allow you to pee in the men's, and you can also be ejected from women’s bathrooms if you’re perceived as a man. Vice versa for trans women. EHRC suggests a ‘third space’ bathroom, which is discriminatory and unworkable for most businesses. (13.130-133)

Sports organisations must exclude trans people from single-sex competitions (13.73).  A women’s only sports competition must exclude trans women because of their biological advantage or face potential lawsuits (13.74), but a trans man who has undergone testosterone treatment can also be excluded based on fairness rules (13.81).

Trans women are stripped of the legal definition of ‘lesbian’, and therefore no longer have legal protections if they’re discriminated against on the basis of sexual orientation. (2.50, 2.92).

If you're worried about the riots right now and are concerned for your safety, the safety of friends and loved ones or the safety of other members of your local community, here are a few posts, organisations and social medias that may help. A group "mobilising against fascism" across the UK, providing updates on the riots as well as information on the locations of planned violence and staying safe while counter protesting. CW: There are some shocking videos and images on here which depict some of the violent scenes seen lately.

@monitoringgroupne_n on Instagram. A group that shares updates, information and concerns regarding the policing and fascism in the North and North East of England. Including sharing information on the location of planned riots, some information on counter protests and staying safe while protesting.

Also, I've noticed that a lot of groups protesting the ongoing genocide in gaza have been very vocally against the far-right riots and have been sharing some information alongside their usual stuff. If you know of a local encampment/group, it's worth searching for their social media.

It's worth checking the lists of people that the listed groups follow on social media as well for more information regarding riots across the country.

March 28, London - Free West Papua

Horrifying footage has emerged of a group of Indonesian soldiers torturing a West Papuan man. Join us this Thursday outside the Indonesian Embassy to protest this crime against humanity and the military occupation that produced it. Torture is so commonplace in West Papua that it has been described as a ‘mode of governance’. This incident only made the news because the soldiers filmed themselves kicking, punching, and slashing their victim; every year, untold numbers of West Papuans suffer the same fate without the world ever finding out. Indonesia’s sense of impunity is aided by unquestioning Western government support and a sixty-year media blackout brutally imposed by the occupying forces. Come along this Thursday to show your solidarity with West Papuans.

Want some advice about protests?

Any advice for trans people in the UK, who want to join direct action groups but are terrified of going to jail, because who knows which gender jail you will end up in and how much they will hate us in there, and getting naked and shit. I dont want to do nothing. Any advice to stop being a coward? Wheatpasting alone doesnt feel like enough. Sorry i dont know who else to ask. Even just telling me to grow a spine. Any conversation around the topic would be great.

Happily, anti-fascist action isn't always "fight the nazis in the streets and go to jail!" We've published a list of 30 antifa actions we believe most people would be able to take on (perhaps with the help of some friends). Don't like any of those? Have a look at the 40 Ways To Fight Fascists: Street-Legal Tactics For Community Activists 'zine for 40 more ideas. Hell, just printing out that distributing that 'zine in your community = legit anti-fascist action. Pick one of those 70 different actions and start with that. When it's done, assess how it went, what could have been done better, and then move on to the next action. LET US KNOW HOW IT GOES!

Advice on Arrest

Say "NO COMMENT" to all police questions during casual chats, 'booking in' & interviews.

At the police station you may wish to give your name, address and date of birth to speed your release.

For your protection and that of other people don't answer further questions.

Do not accept CAUTION without advice from a recommended solicitor. This is an admission of responsibility and goes on the police national computer.

You have the right to FREE LEGAL ADVICE at the police station. Duty solicitors don't always have experience with protest laws, instead ask the police to contact one of the following:

Advice for Trans People

Here is a link to a 22 page pamphlet (dated 2017) written by the Green and Black Cross on protesting as a trans individual.

Although this is specific to trans people, this includes detailed information that the previous advice doesn't have and may be useful to non-trans people too.
