Axis Powers Hetalia: Canada/Matthew Williams [ISFJ]

Introverted Sensing (Si): Canada is pretty quick to follow traditions and refer to how things are ‘supposed’ to be. He notes how things have been before, how people always seem to ignore him, and how they mistake him for America. Whenever he’s angry, he brings forth a slew of details about how people have behaved in the past as evidence of everything wrong with them. He thinks subjectively about his childhood experiences, about the way things were, and often wishes things could just continue that way.

Extroverted Feeling (Fe): Canada is often trying to please others, and bending to their supplications to better achieve this. He’s conscious of how others perceive him (or rather, don’t perceive him) and wishes to adjust his behavior to fit in better. That isn’t to say he’s unwilling to correct people or tell them when they’re wrong (America, at least). He’s very quick to expresses his feelings. He is friendly and flexible enough that he gets along with just about everybody, when they aren’t mistaking him for America.  

Introverted Thinking (Ti): He displays the lower-Ti tendency to often correct people and point out their mistakes. He tries to solve the mysteries that go on around him, to understand why things happen. He asks a lot of questions (when he can get a word in edgewise) and often tries to get as much info as possible. However, he often struggles to use his Ti in an active situation, and he’s more concerned with fitting in.

Extroverted Intuition (Ne): He usually resists major changes to the world as he knows it and gets unnerved by America’s (Ne dom) crazy ideas. He tends to generate anxious potential occurrences when thrown into a new situation. He thinks about things he might do in the future, but is pretty hesitant to leap into action or embrace those possibilities. He is quick to change tactics if the situation suddenly alters.

Code Geass: Kallen Stadtfeld [ESFP]

Extroverted Sensing (Dominant Position): Kallen is aware of injustice that happen in the present, and seeks to join Zero to make an impact to change Britannia and aim for a specific goal. She is often taking direct contact towards the opposing side. She changes her public persona to adapt to the environment. During combat Kallen often displays an competitive edge and challenges the opponent.

Introverted Feeling (Auxiliary Position): She acts based on her own subjective values. During combat she is quick to recognize who her foes are based on which side they are on. When she discovers Zero’s true identity she begins to doubt his loyalty and quickly becomes judgmental towards Lelouch and whether or not to support his cause. She guards her emotions and seeks to know Lelouch on a more personal level.

Extroverted Thinking (Tertiary Position): To fulfill her ethical ideals she relies on others to achieve an objective, and thus joins Zero to accomplish this. During combat she needs tactical directions although she has no difficulty with confrontation.

Introverted Intuition (Inferior Position): Kallen doesn’t have future focus, and looks towards Zero’s influence when deciding on the next move of strategy and striving towards an idealistic future.

Code Geass: Suzaku Kururugi [INFJ]

Introverted Intuition (Ni): Suzaku has one singular purpose in his life: ensuring the peace. He always goes too far for this, for instance killing his own father at a very young age. He is often called disloyal by people because of his devotion of his goal instead of the others. He also has very strong gut feelings. For example, he suspects that Lelouch is Zero even though Lelouch haven’t yet told him so.

Extraverted Feeling (Fe): He acts very friendly towards the people in his daily life; Suzaku understands and connects to human emotions easily and correctly. Nonetheless, he begins to dislike Lelouch after seeing how easily he can hurt, use and lie to people and often criticizes him by stating this behavior is wrong. Suzaku cannot stand the fact that Lelouch has lied to and manipulated almost every person around him and identifies morality objectively by looking into its effects on people.

Introverted Thinking (Ti): He is quick to analyze his circumstances and can easily find a way around to his problems; this is one of the abilities, besides Se, that makes him a great Knightmare Frame pilot.  Oftentimes, he tries to understand people around him (“Why are you so filled with wickedness?”, “Why has Euphemia tried to kill Elevens when she was so into them?”, “Why is Lelouch using his Geass?”) and surrounds himself with questions to analyze things at all times.

Extraverted Sensing (Se): His Extroverted Sensing is the main reason why he is exceptionally good at being a Knightmare Frame pilot.  While it is his less-developed function in combat, he is very aware of his surroundings.

Soichiro Yagami from Death Note [ISTJ]

Soichiro Yagami is probably the character with the most integrity in all of the show. He’s not the most interesting character, but he is a welcome sight to see after looking at the other characters which resemble a sea of gothic-fashioned jerks.

Introverted Sensing (Si):

“I have a responsibility as a parent and as the chief of police.”

Yagami takes his position in society very seriously. He is very dedicated at both being a father and being a man of the law - often giving more dedication to his job. He follows orders without much second thought. Yagami also has problems seeing things from others perspectives, relying mostly on his own experience to make judgments.

Extroverted Thinking (Te):

Yagami takes his job seriously and wants progress. When searching for Kira, he wants efficiency out of his coworkers and subordinates. He doesn’t have any patience for those with second thoughts.

Introverted Feeling (Fi):

“I will not succumb to evil.”

Although Yagami’s morals are mostly a result of his Si, he still has some of his value system formed from his own feelings. His love for justice is undeniable and he completely personally abhors Kira. He sometimes has internal struggles over what is the right thing and the wrong thing to do, such as when Light became the subject of the task force’s investigation.

Extroverted Intuition (Ne):

Yagami’s strong devotion, good organizational skills, and his own conviction make him a decent chief of police, but not necessarily the best investigator. Yagami struggles to think outside the box, and often relies on L or his own son to notice patterns and connections. He can’t fathom the possibility that his own son could be Kira despite the many hints.

Alignment: Lawful Good

As I prevously stated, Yagami is one of the series’ few well-meaning characters. He has strong faith in laws and institutions and wants to do good with his position as the chief of police. Unlike L, he’s not trying to find out who Kira is for the fun of it, but because he is morally motivated to catch him.

Dragon Ball: Krillin [ENTP]

Dominant Extroverted Intuition (Ne): Krillin is a trickster, a kid who sees many different ways around a problem and prefers to employ ideas or gambits over solid facts. He likes to find ways around a problem instead of facing it head-on; whether it be employing trickery in his first encounters with Goku, or using panties to trick ‘Jackie Chun’ in their battle during the tournament. He’s never one to make pre-assumptions about how something will go, instead keeping an open mind and adjusting himself to a given situation. He can come across as a bit spacey and vague, and has a habit of avoiding facing reality.

Auxiliary Introverted Thinking (Ti): Krillin, as stated above, is a trickster who prefers to out-think his opponents, as opposed to out-fighting them. He’s good at turning a situation to his advantage and often  cautious, sitting back and waiting for an opportunity to strike. He searches for the practical application of new techniques and gets frustrated when it doesn’t make sense to him. He is usually keenly aware of the facts in a given situation, and combines that with his Ne in a reluctance to face them.

Tertiary Extroverted Feeling (Fe): Krillin is far more tactful, smooth, and equipped to keep the peace than Goku. He has a decent sense of peoples’ emotions, and is often afraid of hurting them in any way. This shows up at the beginning of Z, when he can’t bear to be the one to break the news to Chi Chi about what happened to Goku and Gohan, for fear of her reaction. He’s skilled at turning peoples’ emotions in his favor.

Inferior Introverted Sensing (Si): Krillin tends to gravitate towards familiar structures. He has a sharp memory for how things used to be and never forgets either a kindness or an injury. He is deeply caring and highly fixated on helping those he values. He’s usually cautious and quiet, slower to act than others and spends time assessing a situation before jumping in.

Death Note: Mello [ENFP]

Extroverted Intuition (Ne): Mello is extremely smart and creative.  He sees patterns and how they connect in the world around him.  Mello tends to chase down different leads, and ally himself with a verity of people in order to hunt down Kira.  He sees possibilities of who, where, and what is going on, rather than the uncanny introverted intuition sense of understanding double meanings and projecting what will happen next.  He is expressive and tends to surround himself with people, despite his selfish goals and his frustration with others.  Although he tends to intentionally alienate people, Mello thrives on stimuli to keep him motivated and inspired.

Introverted Feeling (Fi): Mello makes his choices based on an internal, abstract set of criteria and values.  He glorifies L in his mind, and tries to emulate him in his detective work.  He fancies himself the best detective in the world, and works extremely hard to earn the reputation he feels like he deserves.  His emotions often get in the way of his ability to project what is going to happen next, or thoroughly think through his plans.  Mello is extremely intelligent, but opposed to the cold calculations of Near, Mello has a fiery, passionate personality that drives him on his detective work through brute force.

Extroverted Thinking (Te): This is a less developed function for Mello, but he often uses it to set up traps and organize his plans.  Mello is quick to give orders and move pawns around to where they need to be.  He orchestrates traps or plans in order to get his hands on the Death Note and find Kira.  Although he is excellent at organizing the world around him to suit his needs, Mello is prone to letting his emotions get in the way and foil his own plans.

Introverted Sensing (Si): Mello draws data from his past and memories to use in his plans and intuition.  He knows how things have been done before with L, and wants to do similar kinds of detective work.  He uses the past as as starting point to start brainstorming and strategizing.  He even picks up the similar habit of eating sweets as L.

Hogwarts House: Slytherin

Mello is extremely up front about wanting to be the very best detective, and is constantly competing with Near for being the top strategist.  His ambition and drive makes up for the fact that he is less apt about seeing how everything ties together than Near or Kira.  It is his force of personality and need to be great that leads him to achieve many things and make the discovery he was searching for before his ultimate downfall.

Axis Powers Hetalia: Sweden/Berwald Oxenstierna [INFP]

Introverted Feeling (Fi): Sweden tends to follow his own internal feelings while at the same time rarely expressing them. He cares very deeply about the people around him, but he struggles with expressing it out loud. He does what he can to make those around him feel good, or at least that’s his intention. He often refuses to express himself in order to save face. He is overall reserved and shows little emotion externally, while thinking a lot about his emotional connections and inner feelings inside. He’s really very caring, it’s just hard to tell because of his cold and intimidating exterior. His usual route to understanding others is to speculate about how he himself would feel in that situation (“You should be feeling happy. I know I would.”) He has a strong rebellious spirit and refuses to be controlled.

Extroverted Intuition (Ne): He’s quick to change his mind, go a different direction, or try something new. He pretty much follows his whims and ideas with no real thought-out or long term plan. He assumes some vague day in the future he’ll tell Finland he’s a good friend, but not right now. He often says odd things out of the blue that come from his own connections between various options he sees around him, that weird out those he’s talking to because they seem to come from nowhere. He asks a lot of questions about what’s going on around him.

Introverted Sensing (Si): He’s very cautious and although he does rebel against Denmark and seek to change his position in the world, for the most part he sticks with what’s worked for him before. He’s often hesitant to act and keeps ideas in his mind for a long time without really doing much about them. He certainly doesn’t use much Se, frequently failing to observe what’s going on in his environment and figure out how to adapt himself better to those circumstances.

Extroverted Thinking (Te): He’s a persistent man, willing to do whatever it takes to accomplish his goals, even if that means walking over a completely frozen ocean to attack Denmark. However, despite this impressive display, he usually doesn’t bother with too much organization or persistence; he doesn’t seem to have much of a plan or major goal he wants to accomplish. He’s surprisingly quick to give up at times, whether that be his internal reaction to Poland refusing to hand over Estonia and Latvia, or his quick give up when battling Lithuania.

Dragon Ball Z: Piccolo [INTP]

Introverted Thinking (Ti)/Extroverted Feeling (Fe): Piccolo is clearly logic-dominant, thinking internally about how everything around him works and always acting in a detached and rational fashion. Once he knows there’s a greater threat than Goku out there, he has no problem putting aside their rivalry to work together in order to defeat it. He always suggests things to the Z-warriors in a rational and direct fashion, indicating he’s spent time thinking out, carefully, their potential objections and coming up with counter-arguments. His thought process his dedicated to figuring out how the world works around him, the implications of transformations and behaviors, and how best to turn a situation in a positive direction. He always goes for the rational route. His emotional side shows up in sudden outbursts, in brief spurts of kindness, and susceptibility to friendship. He usually represses his emotions or caring for others in order to do the logical thing, and is a bit socially awkward in company.

Extroverted Intuition (Ne)/Introverted Sensing (Si): Piccolo is quick to come up with various options, to spot different ways of approaching a problem. He’s quite open-minded to possibilities and willing to try anything. He usually applies his ideas to fighting, of course. He likes concepts and abstracts, and can easily understand the potential that a situation has to cause him problems. He’s good at connecting things together, using both his quick-thinking and memory for detail. When he sees Gohan turn into the Oozaru form, it takes him about two minutes to put together both the dangers and how to stop him, based on details of the past.

Berserk: Griffith/Femto [INTJ]

Introverted Intuition (Ni): Griffith’s dream is all consuming and devouring. He will have his own kingdom and there are no actions too vile or questionable that he won’t stoop to if it means becoming step closer to his goal. Griffith is a master of reading people and can easily find spots in their armour to penetrate with his manipulations. He’s a master strategist and is typically a step or two ahead of most people.

Extraverted Thinking (Te): In spite of his soft-spoken demeanour, Griffith is brutal and direct. He has no problem sacrificing countless lives in pursuit of his goals. Griffith has no issues with selling his own body to a perverted lord if it means he can gain the resources to make sure the Band of the Hawk can advance itself.

Introverted Feeling (Fi): Underneath his exterior, Griffith harbours strong emotions. The deaths of his subordinates did weigh on him, forcing him to bury those thoughts underneath his logical exterior. After being tortured and becoming Femto during the eclipse, Griffith commits multiple atrocities towards his former comrades out of anger and resentment.

Extraverted Sensing (Se): A skilled warrior who can kill multiple opponents, Griffith can put his money where his mouth is. However, he prefers to remain in the background and let others do his dirty work so he can retain good publicity. All for the sake of his grand ambitions.

Death Note Another Note: Beyond Birthday [INTJ]

Introverted Intuition (Ni)/Extroverted Sensing (Se): Beyond Birthday is focused exclusively on his goal of symbolically defeating L. His puzzles, hints and word messages are so complicated and involve so many leaps of logic and intuition that they seem almost nonsensical. He must usurp and surpass L at all costs, and this includes dressing as the great detective, killing people with alliterative names as part of a long and elaborate scheme, and even ending his own life. The point is to provide a case that L will never solve. The trouble is that BB never thinks to look at Naomi Misora as anything but L’s pawn, and this is what ends things for him, as Misora figures him out. He has a strange and distant relationship with his environment, obsessively wiping every single surface available to clear away fingerprints just to ensure he’s never truly caught. He needs to overthink everything.

Extroverted Thinking (Te)/Introverted Feeling (Fi): BB is all about following his grand plan, making things come together, plotting out every step carefully and efficiently. He’s extremely controlling over his environment and needs to organize things outside of himself. He thinks only of his plan, his long-term goal, driven by inner feelings of hurt and rejection and perhaps even moral outrage at the way things were conducted at Wammy’s house during the first generation. He’s quite direct and verbally blunt, often scandalizing the ISFJ Misora with his behavior and way of speaking.

Enneagram Contrast: Death Note’s L & Light

Light Yagami: Type One with a Nine wing “The Idealist”

Light is the most archetypal Type One I can think of. He’s obsessed with justice, moral absolutism, and his worst fear is his own corruption. Light is a type one who judges others for their imperfection and inferiority; he can’t allow failure or imperfection in himself, so he responds to his murders in Episode 1 by deciding that those people deserved to die, that it’s the rest of the world that’s corrupt and wrong, not him. Yotsuba! era Light has some of the more positive aspects of Type One, in his ironclad refusal to participate in anything he finds morally abhorrent, his righteous anger over all the problems Kira has caused him and his family, and his dedication to justice and ethics. Light spends most of the story in a high state of stress. He matches up pretty well to Enneagram.com’s description of Level 8 stress of type 1: “Become obsessive about imperfection and wrongdoing of others, although they may fall into contradictory actions, hypocritically doing the opposite of what they preach.” Light has a nine wing rather than a two; he’s often anxious to create equilibrium, to minimize and decimate conflicts in order to be internally successful.

L Lawliet: Type 5 with a Six Wing “The Observer”

This one should come as no surprise - that the dedicated World’s Greatest Detective is the Investigator type. L is an isolated, obsessive, thoughtful and analytical being, focused entirely on his own internal thoughts and conceptions of reality. He wishes to understand and come into the maximum knowldege of his environment; he’s quiet and thoughtful and thinks everything through about ten times before taking action. He describes himself as “childish and hates to lose”, which fits part of Type Five’s description: the basic fear of being incapable and desire to be competent. L hates being wrong and hates failure of any sort; he spends so much time carefully thinking things out and picking things apart in order to avoid that kind of pitfall. His six wing appears in his cautious and suspicion, his obsessive compulsions and need to constantly test everyone to make sure they’re not secretly plotting against him. 5w6 or 6w5 are the most neurotic, anxious and suspicious types, due to their intellectual focus and need to have everything figured out ahead of schedule.

Comparison:

“Kira is childish and he hates losing…I am also childish and I hate to lose.” This I think is pretty indicative of both the similarity and the difference between L and Light, and 5 and 1. To quote the enneagram institute’s thoughts on 5 and 1, they are “alike in many ways, particularly in their reticence to show their emotions directly and in their identification with their minds. Both see themselves as fact-oriented, although Fives are more purely mental while Ones like their ideas and philosophies to have practical ramifications.” The above quote from L highlights the difference between him and Kira: Light would never describe himself as ‘childish’ or ‘hates to lose’, because that would be admitting he isn’t perfect. As a highly unaware Type One, that’s just not something Light can do. L, on the other hand, is often criticizing himself and his own choices, because Fives are deeply introspective and as such painfully self-aware and self-criticizing.
