When pirates hid treasure on islands, they sometimes chose places where it was particularly dangerous to dock. A ship might crash into rocks or get tossed dangerously by turbulent waters.

It makes you wonder what treasure might lie on or under the surface of Mars.

The Martian atmosphere is less than 1% as thick as Earth’s. It’s presence makes it dangerous enough so that if you go too fast, you’ll burn up and yet it’s not thick enough to be very useful to prevent a spacecraft from crashing into the surface at suborbital velocities (see the fate of ESA’s Beagle 2).

From the dunes of Treasure Island you’d see a deep blue sky shift into a warm and quiet red as the Sun sets. On Mars, the iron in the atmosphere can make the sky a permeating red during the day and the scattering of light makes is blue at sunset.
