what have you been enjoying now that the boys is over

Honestly, even though The Boys is over, I’m still completely obsessed with Deeplander. 😭

I’ve been watching other things lately, but my first instinct is still to turn everything into a Deeplander AU. The nice thing about the show ending is that I no longer have to suffer through whatever nonsense the writers come up with. I still have a whole stack of stories that need those two as actors.

My current fic is also reaching its climax! It’s probably going to end up over 50k words, which is kind of wild for me. I have a terrible track record with finishing projects, so actually writing something this long makes me really happy. Lately I’ve realized that writing gives me more satisfaction than drawing. I think it’s because writing lets me express more of my understanding of the characters. My art skills sometimes feel limiting. Then again, my writing isn’t exactly amazing either. I keep wishing I could read ten thousand books and come back as a literary genius just to write a 200k-word Deeplander epic. 😂

I’ve also been working on my BJD project. The parts I ordered have been arriving one by one, and I still need to do the faceups and make wigs.

So honestly, I feel busy all the time. Between real life and hobbies, I have way too many things I want to do and not nearly enough time. There’s also a Chinese Deeplander fan event planned for August during the Chinese Ghost Festival, with a “Night of Returning Spirits” theme. I haven’t even started my piece for that yet…

None of this is a complaint, though. Thinking about those two genuinely makes me happy. 🥰

Maybe part of it is that earlier this year I was diagnosed with breast cancer. It was caught very early, and the surgery and treatment are already behind me, but it changed the way I look at life. These days I don’t really want to spend my time forcing myself to do things I don’t enjoy. I’d rather just do what makes me happy.

And if you’re literally asking what I’ve been enjoying lately besides fandom stuff: Overwatch and Gabriel García Márquez. Which is a ridiculous combination, I know. 🤣

I’ve been playing Overwatch for ten years, and recently I started reading Márquez again. He was my favorite foreign author when I was in high school. I’d only read a few of his most famous novels before, so going back and reading more of his work has been wonderful. It feels good to read books again.

Anyway, sorry for the wall of text. I clearly took “what have you been enjoying?” as an invitation to dump my entire life story. 😇

Honestly, I wouldn’t know how to make a tutorial. I still feel like I’m figuring things out myself, and every drawing is a battle. 😭

I’ve shared a few drawing process posts before. Maybe they’ll help a little.

What brushes do you use?

A lot of my brushes come from free or paid brush packs shared on the Chinese internet, and many of them can be purchased on RedNote. I usually drag my favorite brushes out of those packs and organize them separately, so it’s honestly hard for me to say exactly which brush I used for any particular piece.

There’s a brush set called “卧槽，好笔！” that’s really great to use. The name roughly translates to “Holy Shit, Good Brush!” in English, and honestly, it lives up to the name. 😂

Honestly, who knows. Tastes are random and weird — it's all about fate. I used to be a Marvel/DC fan, and this show was something new. At first I watched like a normal person, seeing everything through Starlight's eyes. I quickly got into Homelander as this complicated character, but I just liked his scenes with women like Madelyn or Maeve — analyzing his psychology, guessing where the plot would go. I hadn't gone full slash-mode yet… not until that scene where Deep's fans fingered his gills.

If Homelander controls my brain and heart, the upper half, then Deep controls my lower half. Initially I was just like 'fine, I'll ship them for fun,' but the more I thought about it, the more it made sense… Of course, a few really good fanfic on the Chinese internet played a big part in that too. Anyway, the two of them together just makes me feel so hot and worked up…

And by the end, Deep was literally the only one who never betrayed Homelander. I can rest in peace now.

Worth mentioning — before I got into this ship, I hadn't been obsessively shipping anything for over two years, nor had I been drawing. Back then I was hooked on an MMORPG that ate up almost all my free time. But The Boys was so good that I skipped my daily game grind for several days. Then right after that, I went on a trip and didn't touch the game for another whole week — I just finished watching the show in my hotel room. So The Boys directly kicked my gaming addiction and helped me pick up my paintbrush again…
