My honest opinion about Karen Page

I am genuinely curious how people can like Karen Page as a character and even ship her with Matt, because I don’t think I’ve disliked a character so much probably ever. Karen Page got on my nerves fast and, as I watched more episodes, it got even worse.

About her

For someone who is supposed to be smart (and the definition of good), she is very stupid. The way she thinks and chooses to act makes no sense 99% of the time. She is more of a bad character than a good one. Even her “sense of justice” is flawed, with many double standards (a subject I will touch on especially when I’ll describe her relations with Matt Murdock and Frank Castle). She is arrogant, troublesome, and headstrong, she calls herself and is considered a journalist despite her lack of real experience (law experience too!!! -> so why is she now included in the firm name? SINCE WHEN IS SHE A LAWYER? I could not believe it!)

She is written in a very annoying way and flat. She is a flat character in the first place (=two-dimensional in doesn’t change throughout the work), kept around for 3 seasons (+The Defenders) for no other reason than the fact she is problematic. But she isn’t necessarily needed for creating drama if we had more villain(s) scenes and plans. She is boring and whiny, and she has a pick-me attitude most of the time. She is not just impulsive, but also extremely FOOLISH (the way she decides to go to Fisk and spill out in his face she killed Wesley… I was like: seriously?) And the writers make other characters praise her… I still find is shocking Matt only said she was brave for what she did. She is VERY judgmental and noisy and thinks the world revolves around her (The fact that when she came to Matt in S2 and found Stick and a very visibly hurt Elektra in his bed, she did not ask a goddamn thing like what happened? instead everything was about her and how she is betrayed. But like another man was in the room, you think he cheated on you with him there? Absolutely ridiculous.) But she loves to play the victim a lot, so I am not surprised.

This hug wasn’t in the script. In the script, it was only written for Debbie and Lip to embrace Ian. Not Mickey. But, Noel just pulled Cameron in. Cameron just went with it and hugged him back.

This kiss wasn’t scripted. It was just meant to be a simple embrace. Cameron just made the decision to pull Noel closer and give a soft kiss to his head. And Noel just let it happen, didn’t react to it.

I love these moments. They’re tender, soft, loving. It also shows this level of trust and how comfortable Noel and Cameron were with each other. Sometimes they understood the characters better than the writers did. I think some of the reason that Gallavich works so much is that it’s Cameron and Noel. They’re great actors and they developed this chemistry that you could feel while watching. They put in care, they loved portraying these two and their love story. And that’s an amazing thing.

Seriously, corner office in a major newspaper publication with no journalism degree?

People wanting "Nelson, Murdock, and Page" to happen when she doesn't have a law degree let alone a license (and the fact that it's literally illegal per New York Bar Association)

✓ Overall Insufferableness

P.S. Most of the bad faith hate against Elektra comes from Karen fans so I wonder why their misogyny concerns go out the window when it's time for them to bash on Elektra. If any Karen fan wants to spring their tired "you're being misogynist!" cop out at this post, know that I'm ignoring it.

Another Thing Blue Eye Samurai Got Wrong

There were women who fought as fighters and samurai (or more often called as onna-bugeisha or onna-musha) for their clan. They didn't have to hide their femininity. There is a long history of female warriors in Japan that date back to an Empress named Jingū (she ruled from 201 to 269 AD). I bring you two of the greats:

Tomoe Gozen

She was skilled at archery, the sword and the use of the naginata. Tomoe is one of the most feared women because of her cleverness and offensive tactical skills. Her men trusted and respected her. During the Battle of Awazu, she killed the Musashi clan leader. Sadly, there is no more records of her after that. Tomoe is the most known and celebrated of the onna-bugeisha.

Nakano Takeko

Like many samurai of her time, she wore the typical samurai armor but instead chose to wear a red hakama. This red hakama became a symbol of not just her femininity but empowerment. She fought in the Boshin War against Imperialists who wanted the Emperor to rise to power (they eventually won during the Battle of Toba–Fushimi).

Similar to the Kiheitai (or the ad hoc army by the Imperialists), she led the Jōshitai or women's army fighting on the side of the Tokugawa Shogunate.

Nakano was wounded with a rifle shot and rather than allowing her enemies to parade her lifeless body as a trophy, she ordered her sister (also a capable warrior as with her mother. all 3 women fought alongside each other) to cut her head off and burry her head in secret so her enemies would not have a reason to disgrace her. Her head was buried under a pine tree and her beloved naginata was given to a temple.

In Aizu during the Autumn festival, girls parade around the streets wearing a red hakama and a white headband to honor Nakano and the women fighters of the Jōshitai.

Other female fighters include Yamamoto Yae aka "Bakumatsu Joan of Arc" and Hangaku Gozen or Lady Hangaku.

Just reminding everyone that the KING of Battle Shonen Anime

is still FULLMENTAL ALCHEMIST and written by a woman.

It's that time of the year where I cry (not to mention re-traumatize myself), ponder about philosophy, scream and cheer, and literally get my brains blown at how masterful Hiromu Arakawa crafted this universe.

I probably watch the entirety of FMA and FMAB and then read the manga every 2 years (a little late since I usually start this around October). No anime, be it recent, classic, Western or Japan-made, has taken it's place. They all pale in comparison to the staggering complexity of FMA.

The quietness, the silence was too dense, too heavy, too thick. He could hear his own thoughts, his own heartbeat and Ian's calmed breath. He missed the familiar feeling of being surrounded by chaos, by loud noises. That was what he knew, he grew up in chaos. But he was trying, his eyes were closed and he was trying to fall asleep.

"Mick" Ian's voice shattered the silence, Mickey refused to open his eyes "I know you're awake"

"I'm not" he answered and he could feel Ian giving him an exasperated look so he opened one eye, smiled at him and when Ian laughed softly he closed it again.

"But are you listening?" Mickey nodded, the sheets moved next to him and suddenly Ian's warmth was closer.

And it felt safe, familiar, right in a place that didn't feel like that. At least not yet.

"I was thinking that we could go to some thrift shop and see if we find some furniture" he said "it might be cheaper and I don't know, maybe more original, you know?"

Ian's voice was somehow a peace that didn't feel too quiet and heavy, it was a peace that calmed Mickey, that made him stop hearing his own heartbeat, his own thoughts. He focused on Ian's voice and wondered why Ian felt like he would never be the peace their married life seemed to need.

"Yeah, sounds good" he agreed, his own voice sounding too soft and almost fading away.

Ian frowned but then his lips draw another a smile, wide and fond that Mickey couldn't see.

"Are you falling asleep to the sound of my voice?" he asked, his tone lower and softer.

"Keep talking" Mickey's sleepy voice answered him

Ian smiled, kissed his husband's cheek and continued talking. And when Mickey fell asleep, he looked at him for a brief second and thought that maybe he wasn't peace, but he was the peaceful chaos that Mickey needed.
