i’m going to be so real here, i don’t think that obsession deserves the amount of conversation it has generated. it doesn’t engage with its most interesting themes in a thoughtful or insightful way, it’s just misogynistic. it’s a classic monkey’s paw tale garnished with some themes that could provide interesting feminist commentary if they were actually engaged with, but underneath it the movie’s actual scares are just scenes of fake nikki doing stuff from late 2000s “overly attached girlfriend” memes or shock value graphic violence against women. it’s not saying anything meaningful about nikki having her bodily autonomy taken away (which is the real horror of the story), it’s only calling attention to that concept in a very surface level way because it’s disturbing and gives the illusion of being a more interesting movie than it actually is. the fully nude female corpse on display for literally no reason other than shock towards the end of the movie was the final nail in the coffin for me. the deaths of the male characters are treated so differently from the female characters that it’s jarring, but again, not in a way that feels like it was put into the movie thoughtfully. the fact that people have been arguing for it as feminist in 2026 is genuinely revealing in that it shows just how low the bar for calling a piece of media “feminist” has become. possession was made in 1981, and i love possession, but we should expect more from art 45 years later that is purporting to be engaging with feminist themes. i love a lot of art that’s very flawed, but we need to be demanding more from art in this political climate in 2026.

the situation with harry potter is kind of unprecedented in some ways imo because it is maybe the largest media franchise in history to be created & owned by a single person who still has direct creative control over it. who is also a billionaire with significant cultural/political influence. like the usual "no ethical consumption under capitalism" type excuses shatter on impact when the bigoted author in question is logging onto twitter every day saying explicitly that when you buy the tim hortons ravenclaw donut she is using your donut money to fund the genocide of trans people. like with big franchises usually there's at least a little more diffusion of responsibility than this

think i might believe in angels but only when i’m tipsy because i was drunk off a double shot of tequila at the devi mccallion show and a random person actually sat down at the table and was excited to talk about angela carter with me. i never get to drunkenly talk about feminist writers with people who actually care about them
