"Oh come on, Aaron! It's what I'm good at! You know that as well as anyone," he adds that last part a little nastily, but Aaron knows it's just a defence mechanism. He can see Robert spiralling in real time and just like an injured fox being cornered on a hunt; he bares his fangs.

"It's one of the only things I'm good at," Robert says sadly, quietly, before adding, even quieter still; "it was the only thing in there I could use to stay alive—"

There's a gasp from behind, and Robert whirls around at the sound of his sister's hushed horror. She's standing there in the doorway—he hadn't even heard her come in—and she's holding her hand over her mouth with tears in her eyes. Robert's resolve all but cracks in two. He hadn't meant for her to hear that. He hadn't wanted any of this. What happened to him is nothing—nothing—compared to what happened to Aaron and Vic. It's not even in the same league.

But Robert can't shake the feelings of guilt and shame surrounding him now like a shroud. They feel heavy and course, more like a tangled braid wrapping itself around his neck; an albatross hanging there, like a noose—a constant reminder—a never ending punishment—everything he deserves—dragging him down down down—

"Robert," Aaron whispers, like his heart is breaking, interrupting his boyfriend's painful reverie. He reaches out carefully, but all Robert can do is flinch, jerking backwards before either of them can come any closer.

"It's not—it's not like that. It wasn't like that, okay? You've got this wrong—Christ, Vic, stop looking at me like that! Both of you, just, just—just stop!"

And Robert runs away before Aaron and Victoria even get the chance to utter another word.

Suddenly there's a familiar pair of lips locked on to his, and air being forced into the back of his throat.

His eyes fling open, and in the murky dark of the bunker—not prison, he’s handcuffed and dying but he's not in prison—he can see Aaron's silhouette—and god he'd know it anywhere—forcing his own breath into Robert's corrupted lungs. Aaron taps his cheek to make sure he's cognisant enough to understand, and Robert nods. Aaron's trying to save him, and all Robert has to do is let him.

He holds Aaron's borrowed breath as his own and he ignores the frisson of fear fluttering in his gut when Aaron has no choice but to pull away as he goes back to the surface for more air.

Seven Sentence Sunday

I’d all but surrendered myself to a white blank page weekend but then bobbie inspired me and suddenly I found words! 🥹 thank you for tagging me @illbeyourreasonwhy @robertbugden @aaronsugdens @thatnervouswreck @stuckinanothertimezone @robrondale @jackiemerrick and KIND OF @waldronconnells 😘

Robert’s straining his whole body with all of his might but even then he can barely keep his head above the water line. If his chin dips even an inch into the dirty water of the flooded bunker, he’s left spluttering at the rancid taste, while at his back his trapped wrists burn as he fights to get free.

Above him, Aaron calls out for help through the open hatch—angrily yells for Mack to hurry the fuck up—but when he turns back to Robert with his eyes big and wide, and the only emotion he can discern on his fiancé’s face is pure panic.

“It’s gonna be okay,” he says but Robert knows Aaron can’t promise that, not really.

He wonders if his own words from years back sounded as hollow; when their roles were reversed and it was Aaron that was trapped, with the water rising all around them. But then he decides that it really doesn’t matter anymore—his time’s running out, and he still has so much to say.

“I love you,” Robert chokes back, desperate to get the words out even as he struggles to maintain the punishing position that’s keeping his inevitable drowning at bay.

Thank you for the tags @barnbert @robertbugden @stuckinanothertimezone and @livflahertydingle !! I’m not totally happy with this but I promised Clara so here’s a random moment from the My Lord Robert au….

Robert considers Aaron for a moment—realising then how truly alike their circumstances are. All of this deception, not for duty, or money, or status, but for the love and safety of the younger sisters they swore to protect.

"So we're both trapped then," Robert muses glumly. "Not sure if that makes it better or worse."

"You're heir to the throne," Aaron scoffs, "not exactly what I'd call being trapped, mate."

Robert laughs, not unkindly, but merely with the air of someone who's been told his whole life that he should be grateful—when he'd have much preferred to merely be loved.

"The union is set," he explains simply. "The law is clear. One of us has to marry you. If it's John, then I'm condemning the Kingdom to a snake as their ruler, who's first act will surely be to kill me, and my sister, before hunting down my brother in exile. And if it's Victoria?”

Robert gives their surroundings a cursory look around before continuing quietly. "Well, her heart belongs to another, and while I don't exactly care for the fool, he's all she's ever wanted. God knows why.”

The detective bristles, and even though his demeanour remains professional, his voice adopts a distinctly defensive tone in the face of Aaron's alpha posturing.

"Well, from what I recall of that time, Mr Sugden's sister was also under the impression that John was innocent—"

"Yeah but the difference is Vic isn't paid to know better—it isn't her job to find the truth," Aaron spits, feeling his heart rate increase with his mounting anger, anxiety and fear.

"Look at you lot," he scoffs as he continues, "even now when you know John framed Robert, and killed Nate, and he tried to kill me and Mack and god knows how many others—you're still not listening!"

DS Jordan sighs, loudly.

"Our intel suggests that Mr John Sugden has fled the country, we really have no reason to suspect he’s part of Robert Sugden’s disappearance. Why would he risk coming back now?"

Aaron feels like he’s caught in a loop—but he can’t give up, he can’t stop trying to make them see; “because,” he says, infuriated at having to do the police’s work for them while the love of his life is out there, in danger, pregnant and missing; “he's a psycho!"

Robert had persevered. He’d practically absolved Kev of any wrong-doing because Robert had lied, Robert had cheated—you hurt me, because you were angry, that's not love, that's control.

Robert had blamed himself, taken full responsibility, and then he'd gone as far as to thank Kev. He’d made it clear—sincerely so—that it was Robert who didn't deserve Kev, and not the other way around—and he'd done it alone, because even though his hands had been shaking in the pockets of his jacket the whole damn time, the idea of adding Aaron to the mix and risking his safety was never even an option.

And in the end it had all been for nothing, because all Kev did was switch his matches out for a loaded gun—sent bullets flying from out of the shadows of the shaded trees—and Robert had spent his first Christmas out of prison wondering if it would be his last…

"Wake up, Robert, please..." he keeps whispering as he fumbles for phone, until Robert lets out a groan, and turns to face Aaron. The new angle gives him a clear view of the bloody side of Robert's face, and the grim rusty colour of his usually blonde hair, but he's awake, and blinking, and Aaron thinks he might cry in sheer relief.

"… Aaron," is all Robert whispers, but even that seems to have sapped most of his energy as he tries to reach out, only for his hand to fall back down pretty quickly.

"Easy, don't move too much," Aaron tells him gently, noticing Robert's aborted movement and reaching out to bridge the tiny gap between them, brushing some dirt from off the side of Robert's cheek in the process. His skin feels like ice, and Aaron doesn't hesitate to start shrugging off his own jacket to drape over Robert, scanning the surrounding fields for answers and finding more questions.

"God, you're freezin', how long have you been out here? What the hell happened? Were you driving that tractor? Did you crash?"

Robert blinks—likely from the sudden influx of questions being thrown at him coupled with his injuries—and he tries to string a sentence together that'll appease his noticeably worried fiance, but his head hurts and he's so tired and—

"… I missed you," is what he settles on saying quietly instead.

Robert gives up on using the sponge and opts for the scourer instead. Out, damned spot! Out I say! He thinks a little foolishly, doing his best impression of Lady Macbeth as he tries valiantly to tackle the discoloured plate. They need more dish soap. They're running low. He'll have to remember to add it to the shopping list. He never should have never let Aaron convince him to forego Fairy Liquid for the cheaper stuff.

"—there's procedures in place to tackle coercion," Serena continues, standing to help; handing over a mug that Robert takes with a nod. "Prisoners are isolated, and vulnerable. I mean the very nature of being in prison in the first place makes that kind of…real connection practically impossible, and that's before you even consider the issue of actual consent—"

Robert's hands suddenly slip and when he drops the mug he's cleaning, it smashes on the edge of the sink; sending shards of sharp crockery into the soapy water below.

“Shit!”

Several sentence Sunday

“Why aren’t you as worried as I am?” Robert asks, trying (and failing) to keep the pitch of his words even. “He’s a psycho he’s—”

"—not getting anywhere near you while I'm here, you hear me?"

Robert falters at that, torn between insisting that Aaron go nowhere near the man, and secretly grateful for the gesture, and its promise of safety.

For a second, he's reminded of months ago, with Aaron trying to sacrifice himself to get Robert and Liam away from Kev and his sword—let them go and I'll stay—and he remembers feeling sick with fear that Kev might have taken him up on his offer, that Liam might have dragged Robert out of there and left Aaron to god knows what fate.

He takes a breath, and half-stumbles into sitting on the sofa, staring at his shaking hands—his fingers still dirty with soil—his mind struggling to stay in the present. He swallows the lump in his throat and gives Aaron a sidelong glance. "He shot at you 'n all, remember?"

"Yeah, and he missed."

"Aaron—"

"Robert! Look, I'm not saying he's not dangerous," he explains plainly, keeping his eyes fixed on his fiancé. "I'm saying it's not your fault."
