Sorry for being vague, basically it seems like we might need to replace two pans that got deeply scratched at some point and we need to get a bath mat to cover the problem areas where the shitty bathtub cracked so we don't cut our feet and potentially get infected while we try and figure out a better solution. Also, please do not listen to how people talk about cover letters on this site. Cover letters are important, and in many industries you can be damn sure they'll be read. And no, they're not 'fanfic about working in your office', or just re-stating the resume contents in a fancier guise. If you treat them like that, then of course they're not doing much for you. That makes you sound like a syncophantic windbag, and it's not doing anything else to help.

I was trained in the dark arts of the cover letter by my mother, who is a hiring manager. And her training has paid off: I've been consistently told my cover letters are excellent. Let me pass on the wisdom.

The job of a cover letter is to give a prospective employer strictly more information than is on the resume. This is where you take the resume contents and put them into context. You look at the job requirements (you are looking at the job requirements before applying, right?) and look at your resume and ask the question (in your head) "why would a person think this candidate would be good for this job?" and your cover letter is the answer to that question. If you don't answer that question, the hiring manager is going to have to do it themselves, and you have way more information to work with than they do.

This is especially important if you're moving from one industry to another, because then the relevant connections aren't obvious. It's also very important if you're overqualified, because then you can use the letter to say "I know it looks like this job would be too entry-level for me, but I'm interested to pursue it for reasons x, y, and z". You can also use this space to explain away something that might otherwise be disqualifying, like job-hopping or a long break in employment. The tone to strike here is always matter-of-fact and constrained to topic - don't go into detail about health stuff or personal tragedy, just tell them what they need to hear: that this period of your resume was affected by [bad thing] but that it's now in the past and you're looking forward to the next chapter. Remember, one of the things they're trying to learn is whether you'd be content in this role, or whether you'd be miserable and leave after 2 months, which would force them to do all the work of hiring again. You're trying to establish that you will fit right in and not cause problems. Knowing what drew you to this job in particular (and don't just say 'money', that's true for everyone) helps with that.

And the other mistake? Everyone writes cover letters that are too long. One page is fine. Two is the absolute maximum, and that's if you have a lot of specific things to say. It's a waste of your time and theirs to pad it out with fluff. Of my two most recent successful cover letters (i.e. jobs for which I was interviewed) one was 390 words and the other was 550. That's the length of this post. How long did it take me to write this post? About 15 minutes to write, 5 to proof and edit. That's how long you should be spending on a cover letter, maximum.

it's official- we've missed rent for a second month in a row now, and the expenses keep piling on. the car, my girlfriend's computer, our bills...

but most pressing of all, my teeth. aggressive infection that's rotting them away day by day. in a month i doubt i'll even have any gums left. one of my teeth has started breaking apart, little chunks of it falling out of my mouth. it hurts.

the total for all the work i need is $3292. we're also $2360 behind on rent. $5652 total.

my girlfriend is working lots of overtime, but to pay these bills and make rent next month, she'd need to work about 130 hours a week, without food or gas for the car, nonstop all month.

the most pressing matters are the gum cleaning (still furious that insurance won't let me do it all on the same day), which is mercifully only $60 total, and the root canal/crown for tooth 30 (1st molar right side), AKA the tooth that's falling apart. $1997 for that. payment required up front.

at this point some new bullshit comes up every day. we began to have hope after my girlfriend started her job, but it's being dashed at every turn now. please, please help us. we're doing everything we can. please reblog, and if you can, please donate. thank you. i'm sorry.

In the early twenty-first century, there is a common marketing trend to sell processed food with a minimal number of ingredients, forgoing preservatives. Processed food is required, by law, to list out all ingredients. It is common for many preservatives and nutritional additives to be included in food, so ingredient lists can be quite long and can include the specific organic chemistry name.

For example, Sodium benzoate is an extremely common ingredient in acidic foods like salad dressing and soda because, in such an environment, it inhibits bacteria and fungal growth. Sodium benzoate is a naturally occurring substance, found in cranberries, dairy, and seafood. It can be made cheaply and drastically increases the safety and longevity of food because of its properties. And its safety has been studied extensively since the late nineteenth century, where it was one of the preservatives studied by the first commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration. However, because there is no common, household name for the substance (other than benzoate of soda, which is no longer a popular name), it is seen as somehow unnatural and scary as a "chemical."

Thus, some companies, as part of a marketing push, deliberately omit ingredients like "sodium benzoate," implicitly labeling it as an unhealthy ingredient and one that people would have trouble pronouncing. People who can only read words they are familiar with, like small children, and only partially literate individuals, might have trouble saying the chemical's name.

There is no correlation between simple names and health. Some artificial chemicals are very unhealthy, unlike sodium benzoate. And some "natural" substances are lethal. But some people like to only eat things they are familiar with and do not wish to look up information about ingredients.

this is so fucking true, I grew up teetering the line of not having food and my parents constantly had to cut costs everywhere they could to keep me and my sisters fed. we struggled, but my family would rather struggle than accept any kind of outside help (be it from family, friends, or government systems) because conservatives believe that financial instability is a moral failing

Describing conservatism as "fuck you, I got mine" is an oversimplification - albeit a pretty accurate one - but I think a deeper study would reveal that they also have fundamentally different ideas of what government is for. Like, what is the government's purpose? What's it ideally supposed to do?

And I think (very broadly speaking) liberals generally believe that the government's job is to protect and help people, and conservatives believe the government's job is to control and punish people.

So when we see one year old babies being pepper sprayed by ICE, one group sees that as the government subverting its purpose, and the other sees it as the government fulfilling its purpose.
