The Forgotten Knight, Hamza Al Misri (may Allah free him)
His name is Mustafa Kamel Mustafa, 57. His nickname is Abu Hamza Al Misri. Hamza was born in Alexandria, Egypt; not such is known about his early years but we know that he studied civil engineering, reverted to Islam and took up Islamic studies, he then grew up into a well known Islamic preacher who migrated to the UK. He was an active Imaam of Finsbury Park Mosque from 1997 and the leader of a group known as ‘Shariah’ in the UK. He spread the religion well, known for always preaching the truth.
According to most authentic reports Hamza was been tracked by the UK intelligence ever since the 7th July bombings, (often referred to as 7/7), it is said that the Imaam gave an uplifting speech inciting terrorism acts often and particularly around the 7th July.
He married a British revert, divorced her and re married, he was granted citizenship in the UK after marrying the British national. He is said to have 9 children in the UK, two sons are also facing terrorism charges.
He was heavily influenced by the Iranian revolution; he took an interest in Islam and politics, in particular the occupation of Afghanistan by the Soviet Union. After meeting the founder of Afghan Mujahideen in 1987, he moved back to Egypt and then to Afghanistan, and it was in the following years that he lost his hands and one eye. In what was said to be either during a battle or preparing for an attack.
After spending time in Afghanistan and Bosnia in the early 90s, he returned to Britain and then adopted the title - Sheikh Abu Hamza al-Misri, due to his knowledge and leading impact of the youth.
In London he Hamza began his rise to public notoriety as the Finsbury Park mosque imam, where he arrived in 1997.
He then outwardly announced a stance on supporting ‘terrorists’, he was accused of aiding in many terrorism acts, such as, sending money and men to Al Qaeda in Afghanistan, setting up of a training camp in Bly, Oregon. And conspiring to take hostages in Yemen.
He firmly placed himself on the national radar in 2001 after speaking out in support of Osama bin Laden following the September 11 attacks.
In 2004, Hamza was arrested by British police after the US requested he be extradited to face charges.
He was later charged by British authorities with sixteen offences for inciting violence and racial hatred.
In 2006, a British court found him guilty of inciting violence, and sentenced him to seven years imprisonment.
On 5 October 2012, after an eight-year legal battle, he was extradited from the UK to the United States to face terrorism charges and on 14 April 2014 his trial began in New York.
On 19 May 2014, Hamza was found guilty of eleven terrorism charges by a federal jury in Manhattan.
On 9 January 2015, he was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, in the US.
Hamza, like all Western detainees, faced and is facing immense torture in prison.
Upon sentencing Hamza, his judge told informed him: “I do believe there’s another side to you, a side that this court views as evil, I don’t believe that the world would be a safe place with you in another 10 or 20 years.”
He may be sent to prison ADX Florence where prisoners, especially Muslims are disproportionately kept, it is used for those convicted of major crimes, and termed as a ‘clean version of hell’. It violates the Human rights standards in every way; an inmate can face up to 8 and half years in solitary confinement.
He often faced public mockery such as being referred to as a one-eyed, hooked-handed Muslim terrorist, or addressed as ‘Hooky’ and been told to ‘sling your hook’ by journalists who publically interviewed him during his trail periods. One cannot imagine another severely disabled, aged person, regardless of race or region, being referred to by virtue of his disability in such a derogatory manner, particularly in a country that has is proud to display its Kingdoms’ cordial reception and hospitality!
He may be forgotten by most people, it also may be forgotten on most people that he sustained horrific injuries, the loss of both arms and an eye, and he never received proper medical care, due to him being on the national radar, he could not travel easily or access proper operations.
Lawyers gave requested that Hamza face a lower security prison due to his deterring health however since he faces maximum security there is very little lawyers and aid organizations are able to do for him.
The aged, tortured and disabled knight will spend the rest of his life in the US, in a federal super-max prison which is situated in Colorado, where some of the world’s most notorious terrorists are imprisoned and held in solitary confinement.
We appeal to the Ummah to pray for the Imaam, to follow his path, to incite others to follow him and raise awareness about his plight.
