Renji blinked a little before giggling and shrugging. âAlright alright, Iâll try to tone it down.â He scratched his neck awkwardly. âItâs fine. Iâm meant to be a spy anyways. I donât fault you for believing me. All my information was fabricated, so.. Donât worry about it, okay? I donât care.â He tilted his head, smiling.
He seemed a little surprised, but his smiling grew a bit and he genuinely seemed really thankful. He would never admit it, but he did see the Hassaikai as family. No matter how .. messed up it was. âYouâd do that?â He blinked, nodding. âYeah. Thatâd be nice. Thank you.â He muttered, a hint of warmth worming its way onto his expression. â.. Y-Yeah. Theyâre all I had. I canât believe I spent so much time with people older than me than people my age.â He breathlessly chuckled, his fondness quickly turning awkward.
Renji glanced at the ceiling, hearing the commotion from upstairs. His brows pressed together, expression knitting into something of concern. For who, was unknown. âYeah. Overhaul-samaâs a good fighter. The only problem is he lets emotion and rashness get the better of him. N-Not that thatâs a negative thing. Iâm guilty of doing that a lot.â He muttered, as if trying to guess what was happening in the fight. He found it hard to believe that Overhaul would lose, but he knows he shouldnât be too sure. Heâs seen the students at U.A and theyâre nothing short of impressive.
He paused, looking back at Kazuki with a small grin. âDonât worry, I wonât let anything happen! Iâm kinda in charge of that part anyways, so .. Not even a finger will be laid on you! But Iâd be your boss, so that would kinda suck.â He snickers playfully, but exhales tiredly as his smile fades just a tad.
Renji paused, taking in his words. Part of him is a little surprised to hear that. For some odd reason, heâs always assumed heroes were pure of heart. Even if heâs been grilled into that they arenât, or whatever Overhaul-sama says, heâs always foolishly assumed theyâre nothing short of saints. Maybe it was because his ma believed in such a thing. But to hear it felt weird. To hear that he, out of all people, could be a hero felt even weirder. He could barely wrap his head around it. But Iâve killed so many people, he wanted to say. Can someone whoâs hurt so many others be a hero? He wanted to ask, but he didnât. It just didnât leave his mouth.
A slow, breathless laugh left Renjiâs mouth and he backed away, hiding his face. âDonât say things like that.â He chuckled, his hand moving to his face. If Kazuki looked close enough, it was a tear. âIâll never understand you guys. Heroes.. everything..â He muttered, sniffling. He wipes his face, making himself look at least presentable before looking back at Kazuki. âWell, if you think I can be a hero, Iâll give it a shot.â
