Super happy that Uncharted 4 had a female antagonist who was actually capable and respected by our guys (even if fragile incels cannot handle her at all lmao)

Only thing I wish was different in the last two Uncharted games (besides TLL being a direct copy of U4 mechanic wise because I get that they had a limited amount of time and resources) is Nadine not having her own musical theme like Chloe and Nate. Even if it was in U4 when she was an antagonist I’d have enjoyed it. And Henry Jackman would’ve done an incredible job had he written one.

And like, not even a theme per se. A simple motif like Chloe’s so it would appear throughout the game’s ost as well. That would’ve worked wonders in TLL

Hello Mrs. CBC, I have a question that pertains less to creating a Black character and more how to act when the fandom is whitewashing one. I thought you'd be a good source to ask, but if it strays too OT from your blog then please feel free to disregard it.

My question is, as a white fan, I don't really know when it's my place to speak up about whitewashing? Usually, I reblog/retweet/share posts written by other Black fans, but the fandom I'm in is from a very niche anime and is incredibly small, barely any popular at all in the West at large. The Black character is drawn so much paler than he is in the anime and it bothers me a lot. I want to avoid coming off as a white saviour, though, especially because I'm white while the artists who whitewash him are largely East Asian. I have always stopped supporting the artists who do whitwash him but I don't know if it's my place to call anyone out

To be clear- if you are informed enough, that is. If you don't know or aren't confident about what you're talking about, that's one thing. But whitewashing is probably the easiest form of fandom racism to point out. We can literally see when a character isn't as dark as they are in canon, or when their hair texture has been thinned, or their nose changed. We can TELL that the guy you drew is NOT the guy we're supposed to be seeing. I have a lesson about this in my pinned post!

Also, being a white savior is not "I'm speaking up when I see racism". That's not what that word means. Being a white savior is when you talk OVER Black people and people of color, as if you know more and better than them about their own experiences. It's treating us like we're children, like we're less intelligent, that we NEED you and your "wisdom". But both you and an East Asian artist are capable of antiblackness. Neither of you are the group in question. You don't have to be racist or condescending to them, but it is not racism or white saviorism to say "hey, this is whitewashing and that's not cool". Especially if there's no one else in the space saying anything, likely because they're afraid of rocking the boat.

Now, to be clear: if this is a niche space, you're gonna lose some friends. People are gonna start treating you differently. 100%. Sorry. So be aware of that before you say something! If you're not willing to make that sacrifice for the sake of antiracism, you need to sit with yourself first before you go on this journey. If you're worried about being a white savior, that part is also on you- no one owes you thanks for doing the right thing, you won't get to go "well I gave up all this for Black people, why don't they-" ERRNT! If you aren't gonna do right because it is right, then don't do it.

So, I figure you know this but if you don't, the Humanae project used to have an official Tumblr blog that went down a while ago, with a ton of photos that aren't available on the current official webpage. I found a Github repo that had recovered and archived links to 9000+ of the images on that blog (apparently they're still hanging out on Tumblr's servers), but a giant pile of links is not very easy to traverse.

I threw together some code that ran through all the images, grabbed the background colors from all of them, and compiled them into palettes. You can look at and download them here. :)

They're divided into "light", "medium", and "dark" palettes based on the HSV lightness values of the colors - swatches in the top third of the range are "light", middle third are "medium", bottom third are "dark". It is basically arbitrary, I just split them up because I thought they would be easier to use that way.

The data set is pretty biased towards lighter skin tones, which is disappointing but not totally surprising, since the webpage for Humanae suggests most of the cities visited were in white-majority countries. Still, I hope it's useful to someone! Palettes of actual human skintones.

It is important, as artists and as fans of media, to be able to recognise, portray, and appreciate POC features on characters (shock fucking horror). As artists, make it a part of your study to draw POC, to learn how to draw different features. Ranges of eyes, different facial structure, lips, noses, varieties of skin tones. This is obviously important for, you know, basic human decency, but it ties in with GenAI.

Machine learning and datasets have always been saturated with whiteness. The IT sector is overwhelmingly white and always has been. The models are training off a very white internet. GenAI skews white (and anime-style but we're not talking about that today).

So when it comes to GenAI and faking semirealism, it'll give you skewed results when it tries to represent characters that aren't white. It especially struggles with Black characters. So you, discerning reader, must be able to spot tells that a human, an artist, should be able to represent. Does that art look rendered to a high level, but Davrin's got a narrow nose and his palms are the wrong colour?

Hey. Don't bean soup me. You - critical thinker, you - know there are many more AI tells than just misrepresenting a character's features or skin tone. You know this. I'm holding your face in my hands you know this. Say it with me - alone, these tells don't guarantee AI.

What I'm saying is - if you go about your days on the internet comfortable believing that you don't have to put care and time into depicting POC, if you're happy to do that because all your OCs are white and why would you need to learn? First and lesser, you're gonna get fooled by AI. Secondly and more dire, you're gonna perpetuate this very pervasive attitude I've seen where "the art is there, the Black character is there, who cares if they don't look accurate, at least they're there" which is harmful. It's lazy. It's saying: "white characters are the only characters who deserve to be depicted accurately."

Look inward, look outward. Look at what you're supporting with your reblogs. Care more. Respect more.
