around this time of year, the malfoy manor would go up in lights. draco’s mother has a penchant for CHRISTMAS & decorations are her sole domain. each year, there is another layer to the maze of baubles and tinsel & the old house stirs from its antiquated slumber & comes to life in sparkling splendor. it’s really no wonder that some of draco’s memories are here. 

but this year, the manor is barren of color or light. the presence of a giant man-eating snake takes the damper out of any ounce of holiday CHEER.  but the snake is easier to get used to than the dozen or so hostages that currently make their home in the bowels of the manor. draco escapes to his room whenever he starts to hear screams.

today, he’s been asked to go fetch luna lovegood. everyone in the house knows draco doesn’t really NEED to be assigned the task of bringing his old classmates to the other death eaters for interrogation ( TORTURE. this is TORTURE ! ), but everyone also knows that the DARK LORD doesn’t forgive easily. 

it’s eerily quiet when he unlocks the door with his wand.

          the  quill  scratches  endlessly  across  the  notepad,  COPYING  his  words  exactly  as  he  speaks  it.  pansy  is  as  ferocious  as  rita  skeeter  when  it  comes  to  DIGGING  for  dirt  but  the  similarities  stop  there  :  rita  doesn’t  allow  truth  to  get  in  the  way  for  a  good  story  while  pansy  delivers  nothing  BUT  truth  in  its  ugly  glory.

          her  brows  furrow  at  his  last  demand  and  she  BECKONS  her  quill  and  notepad  back  to  her  lap.   ❝   what  I  want  to  know  and  what  the  prophet  wants  to  know  are  two  different  things,  draco.   ❞   she  shuts  the  notepad  and  places  it  into  her  purse.  she’ll  just  incorporate  OTHER  ministry - related  topics  to  fill  in  the  left  over  space  on  the  article.

          ❝   i  want  to  know  how  you  are.  how  you’re  coping.   ❞   i  want  to  know  if  you  missed  me.  but  she  doesn’t  DARE  speak  her  thoughts.  she  is  no  longer  that  lovesick,  smitten  teenager  anymore  and  she’d  rather  die  before  letting  him  think  she  still  is.  ❝   off  the  record,  just  between  you  and  me.   ❞

draco wouldn’t have made it THIS far without having adopted a general air of suspicion.  foe unless proven otherwise is the best policy -- & even then, he knows that it doesn’t take much for most people to TURN against him. some might call it paranoia.  he calls it SURVIVAL.  

( --- besides, he’s not convinced the ministry has really let him entirely off the hook for. . . well, everything. as a precautionary matter, he NEVER wears short sleeve shirts.  & he never talks to anyone about anything except work. )

draco hasn’t a clue what pansy has been up to for the past few years. they’ve all made DEALS they aren’t proud of to stay alive ( & out of prison ) and he’s can’t be sure pansy is any exception. he can’t trust her. it aches - but he can’t trust anyone.

              Hermione offers a particularly withering look. Busy indeed, busy slowly DYING inside, if the pack of forms on his desk says anything at all. She can’t possibly imagine anything more tiresome ––– except perhaps watching paint dry ( a conundrum she supposes not many Wizards would be acquainted with, in lieu of magic spells ), or, for her, a Quidditch match in which no one she gives half a damn about is playing. 

The truth of the matter is, even her own job can be a headache –– a boring, frustrating, terrible headache. And Hermione, for one, LIKES her job. Or, she thinks she does. Lately, she has to wonder if anyone likes theirs. Course’ she avoids thinking about her mother and father’s love for dentistry then –– they’re an exception. 

Her arms fold, more defensively than she’d care to admit. It lasts for a half-second before her hands relocate to her hips. Better. 

The words that follow taste and feel like wet cement sludging off her lis. 

“ As you know, or might know, I have a non-profit organization which I’ve been trying… for some time… to get off the ground. The ministry has finally agreed to back me up on it… so long as I maintain the proper forms from all departments. ” She has a tendency to ramble, to say more than she needs to, and she notes this with a tinge of HORROR as she’s unable to keep more and more from slipping out. This was supposed to be short and to the point. So much for that. “ Asides from that, I… need your help. More to the point, I need the department’s help. You’re simply an accessory. ” 

draco really hasn’t got time for THIS. he’s not in the business of doling out charity to one of granger’s pet projects -- no, he’s got thousands of old regulations to sift through & not nearly enough time to do it. but he’s quite sure whatever cause granger is peddling is insufferable, & perhaps this peaks his interest a bit more than it should ---

‘ lucky me. i’ve always wanted to be an accessory . . . ’ he drawls, wondering if this is granger’s best attempt at schmoozing.  ‘   granger -- if you want people to do what you want, you should try being a bit more flattering. ’

‘ what exactly is this non-profit about ? and what do you need my help for ? isn’t there someone else you can bother with this ? ’
