This line in 6x11 made me wonder… does Emma still have all the memories from all the things she has been through in six seasons?
Because when you look at them all…
When we first meet her in the pilot, she has the memories of the 28 years that far. She is an orphan - a bail bondsperson.
In the season 1 finale, thanks to the book, she gets the memories of being Snow White and Prince Charming’s daughter. Of having been put into a wardrobe and shipped to Maine.
In 3x11, Regina gives her (and Henry) a new life, new memories.
And in all 3B, we see her struggling with that. Wanting to go back to New York, to that life. Because, although it has been only a year, she has the memories of having raised Henry. Those are 10 years of memories + the actual year.
In the Season 3 finale, she goes back to the past to play Princess Leia for a bit. (funny how whenever Emma isn’t herself, she is a princess, right?) And while her memories haven’t been changed, going back in time and changing stuff isn’t usually a good thing. Especially if you consider that she has been included in the book at that point. Which, thanks to Regina’s words, we know “It’s powerful. It’s more than just a book. What happens inside it appears immutable.”
In 4A, she realizes she knew the Snow Queen, and at the end of the arc the Snow Queen gives her back memories of the time they have spent together. More stuff for Emma to add to her memories… more stuff to add to the life she thought she knew.
In the AU in the Season 4 finale, she is considered a “mad hag who calls herself the savior”. While, here, Emma knows who she is, having other people look at you as crazy, doesn’t help. Especially if you have been locked up in a tower. And who knows, according to those memories, how long she has been locked up there.
Then, turning into the Dark One: there is no memory change here, but sharing your mind with all the previous Dark Ones must not be easy. Do you retain some of their memories? How does that really work? Didn’t really work well for Rumple and Neal for sure.
After Camelot, we are supposed to think that Emma knows everything that happened there. But are we sure? If we consider that what brought them back to Storybrooke was Dark!H00k curse, then I wouldn’t be so sure.
Surely enough, H00k takes away her memories, because he wants to hurt her like she hurt him. I don’t trust H00k in general, let alone Dark!H00k, so did she (and the others) really get all the memories back, all that happened in Camelot? Did we get to see *everything* that happened? There is time missing. One way or another, there is more messing around with Emma’s mind/memories.
Then we are back to the wish realm, to what made me start this whole post. If she still has all the memories from Princess Emma in that realm, why not all those memories as well?
Finally, in the Season 6 finale, Emma has a whole new set of memories. Because all of that this far wasn’t enough. She has a different life in her head of what happened after Henry brought her to Storybrooke.
So, it makes you wonder, what are the actual memories she gets back at the end? Does she remember everything? is it all twisted up and mashed together?
If the people in Storybrooke after the first curse, as Charming says in Season 2, are both… what does that make Emma? all of them? none?
And if you add the fact that she doesn’t always know everything… like, let’s say, her own boyfriend constantly keeping secrets from her… what does she actually know? what is actually going on in Emma’s mind?
