We hate hood girls but we love hood boys...
I’ve discussed this before, and I never get tired of talking about it because it’s so prominent.
There’s a blatant difference in our (our meaning the black community/culture) culture’s reception of black women and girls from the hood, vs. black men and boys from the hood.
I see this in the way we celebrate vines and videos of black men doing things we tag “carefree black boys”. We love it so much that we end the enjoyment of these videos with “I love my people”. I see in our consumption of hip-hop music and entertainers. We love the dope boys, the trap Kings, and hood dudes.
But it’s entirely different when it comes to black women and girls. When we view videos of black women and girls from the hood singing, dancing and being themselves the immediate reaction is to turn our noses up and spin off a sea of respectability politics. God forbid they look the part then it’s really a jury of judgment. We can’t stand the hoodrats, the ratchets or the ghetto girls.
It’s a double standard that I see every single day, and I’m still trying to understand why?
