              ” sorry—! So sorry! I didn’t mean to— I was only just— Here: Let me just—” 

                        It takes some effort  to detach the poor little cloche hat away from his hands and set it right on its perch. It stares back at him and the shop girl sadly. The satin at the brim is beginning to fray, it’s bow sits tilted, and one of the silk roses is still stuck to his palm. 

                ” I—”                                                                          ” —sorry. “ 

           dismay flickers briefly across her expression, and Sophie comes closer to                examine the damage done. Careful fingertips slide gently along the brim of the                hat, the other adjusting the book under her arm before pushing the bow back                into place. ❝ If I'd've known this was what was to become of you, I'd've talked                more life into you, ❞ she murmurs, mostly to herself. 

           Finally, she turns back to him. ❝ If you're not here to destroy the remainder of my                hats, what is it you want, exactly? ❞

           ❝ believe me, I’m rarely rude to strangers, especially customers, but that                    changes when you come in my shop and — and mess everything up! ❞

           ❝ -- are... are you all right? ❞

           it must have been raining, because Calcifer wouldn't be in the grate               otherwise. It was his voice that piped up, lazily informing her that he'd stopped               the castle. ❝ What ever for? ❞ she inquired, eyebrows raising in mild surprise as               she turned to look at him over her shoulder, from where she was reorganizing               books on the shelf above the table. But he didn't have to answer her; a firm knock               pounded at the door, and Calcifer informed her it was the castle door from his               place hidden under the logs.

           Head tilting, Sophie set down the stack of books on the table and made her way               to the door, twisting the knob beside the door so the indicator pointed purple-               side down, and pulled it open. She blinked a few times at the young man               standing at the bottom of the stoop, though she did her best to smile through               her surprise. ❝ Hello. You must be looking for Howl...? ❞

#no but like #you don’t understand how important and meaningful sophie’s arc in this movie is #she starts out hating herself because she believes herself to be ugly and dumb#then she’s turned into an old hag and promptly loses most of her insecurities because she no longer has to care about being beautiful #then we find out the curse weakens whenever she is being strong and it shows her real self underneath #which means the curse is mostly self-inflicted and not done by the witch of the waste #sophie curses herself because it is easier for her #but because she starts to see that she is important to people and others love her #she grows out of it and finally is able to stand up for others #and break her own curse #and get some fucking shit done #sophie is my hero and my gpoy always

In the book, Sophie possess a certain kind of magical power - she makes things real by saying them. She can lay spells just by saying them. When she made hats, and she told a hat that it would make a rich young man fall in love with it, a rich young man fell in love with the woman who bought it. When she told a hat it would make some woman look beautiful, everyone knew the mayor’s wife looked positively radiant in it. It’s what drew the Witch to her hat shop in the first place.  When she cursed out a bucket of plant food, it turned to potent weed killer. When she told herself she might as well be an old woman, when she told herself she was doomed to fail, when she told herself she was plain and boring and no one would ever notice her, no one did.

When Howl tried to break the spell on Sophie, and he tried many times, he always failed. Not because his magic was less powerful than the Witch’s, but because it was less powerful than Sophie’s.
