Advice on Endings

I hate ending my stories. I will drag a story on long after it should have ended even though I know it should be done with. If anyone else struggles as well, here is a list of the different types of endings that are common.

Full Circle – Mirror the beginning of the story, show how the tone has shifted from start to end

Bittersweet – Character wins at the cost of something else, creates emotional depth

Emotional resolution – Focuses more on the growth of the characters than the events of the story

Twist – reveal something that changes the readers perspective or understanding

Open – doesn’t answer all the questions or solve all the conflicts of the story, leaving room for interpretation

Quiet – Subtle, reflective ending rather than a dramatic event

Sacrifice – The character has to give something up to achieve a greater goal

Hopeful – Despite the events of the story, there is a distinct sense that everything will be okay

Consequence – Shows how the characters choices throughout the story impact the world or their relationship

Character choice – centers on a decision that defines who the character has become through the story

One of my favourite GO moments is when Nina calls Crowley weird bc she really breaks the glittery 4th wall of the story and makes you realise how deeply strange they must look.

To everyone on the street there is just this extremely gay, pushy bookseller bookhoarder who probably sells something illicit or runs a backroom operation in his shop to stay in business in the middle of Soho. Then there’s his off putting emo rottweiler husband/body guard/possibly a sugar baby because his only job seems to be mogging during their thinly veiled public dom/sub play while he drives at a gazillion miles an hour in Draculas favourite hot wheel.

My next door neighbors are this younger MAGA couple. We don’t talk, of course, but we don’t exactly hurl dog poop over the fence either. In their back yard was this enormous and beautiful tree - I envied it because it was the perfect climbing tree, offered tons of shade, just gorgeous.

One day they invited their more yard-work-friendly family members over with ladders and chainsaws and (with kids climbing on or playing right under the branches they were sawing) chopped that whole huge beautiful tree down to a stump. No idea why - it was healthy and strong and not a hurricane hazard. The branches were thrown in the wooded area behind both our properties, which is a major hazard in the hot dry summer when there are fire advisories, and they dried up and died out there.

The stump, valiantly, kept trying to bounce back. Little shoots and leaves would spring up only to be hacked back down. It grew little white flowers and those were cut off and the stump shaved down even smaller. More leaves burst out in defiance - they made a hole in the center of the stump and lit a fire inside it.

Every time the tree tried to rise up and grow again in spite of what had been done to it, I looked outside and hoped - maybe this time they would leave it alone. Maybe this time they would decide they can’t kill something beautiful. Every time they hacked, yanked, chopped, and burned it back down. Finally the stump is just sitting there dead, offering no leaves and no shade and no beauty, while its limbs sit dead and crispy in the 93 degree heat behind our home.

For a while, I thought there couldn’t be a more apt metaphor for what this administration is doing to our country, its people, our hope and our beauty.

Then that friggin reflecting pool turned puke green.
