@unfortunate-songbird
surely this is a sign that there’s nothing in particular wrong with the atmosphere right now
extremely funny to me that Kermit the Frog is the only main overlap character between Sesame Street and The Muppets. imagine your day job is hanging out in a community of lovely people that genuinely just want to help kids learn and care about everyone so so much and then your night job is the reason that you have to stay up to date on your rabies AND tetanus vaccine
at noon the giant you're hanging out with is Big Bird! a wonderful fellow who likes reading stories and singing and telling fun facts! at midnight there's a giant named Sweetums who makes you feel like you're being hunted for sport
Ernie, trying to maybe come out to Kermit: well you know Kermit, me and Bert-
Bert: Bert and I
Ernie: Bert and I, we've been best friends forever, but we're also something else too!
Kermit, who every goddamn night has to tell Beaker and Bunsen to keep it professional, deal with Statler and Waldorf's bullshit, AND update his organizational chart on Dr. Teeth and the Electric Polycule: that's really great to hear fellas, happy for you two! :)
I know this would be a massive overhaul of, like, the entire site, so it's pretty unfeasible, but it really would be nice if ao3 had an easy way to filter for, for lack of a better term, secret third thing relationships. obviously this would have a lot of utility for aspec characters in weird relationships where the honest answer to "are they dating and/or having sex?" is "we shrimply don't know," or for characters who are straight up explicitly in qprs, but I think fandom as a whole often enjoys digging into blurred, indefinable, and dramatically over-intense relationships. examples: characters who don't want to kiss or sleep together but are in a committed bond and functionally act as spouses, friends with benefits who are decidedly not romantic with each other, and characters who are romantically and sexually involved but mostly as a side effect of the Weird Intense Thing they already had going on.
it wouldn't be a defined Third Type of relationship filter, it would be a grab bag for anything outside of "romantic and sexual" and "nonromantic and nonsexual," but as it stands I think it's mostly the "&" tag being used as the grab bag for "???" relationships currently. what if I want to write about that classic "two queer woman characters have been best friends since elementary school and functioned as an inseparable unit until young adulthood and have had moments of attraction towards each other since high school that they've never acted upon but they absolutely never would have had this kind of bond with straight female friends" experience? is that a / or an & ?
Martin TheMagnusArchives Blackwood can teach you the beautiful lesson that you can spend your entire life arduously molding yourself to be the most pleasant and tolerable person possible in order to evade the cruelty of others and someone will still decide to hate you for no reason. This sounds demoralizing but it’s actually just a great reason to stop letting the people who like you the least shape your actions and instead start being a bitch unapologetically. I mean living for yourself. Because the people who are meant for you will like you the most when you’re the most authentically you, not when you’re the least difficult. Ideally your personal journey in this area does not involve man eating worms but we take what life gives us I guess.
may be a hot take but i think the fact minors can access 18+ content by just clicking a button that says 'yes im totally over 18 trust me' is like. totally fine tbh. its a non-issue. i dont care if curious teenagers are looking at porn. they've been doing that for as long as porn has existed. id rather teens explore their sexuality through images on the internet than rush into real life experiences when they're not ready for it yknow. the UK is trying to put stricter age verification in place (which in turn is becoming an online privacy nightmare) and like. for what. who is it helping. why is this a problem.
People panic about "But what if kids pick up bad ideas from it???"
When I was a kid, Power Rangers got banned at school because we all thought it was incredibly cool and kept trying to kick each other in the head. No-one bothered explaining "Those are trained actors and it's all practiced, they don't *actually* hurt each other, and you're not good at that yet", they just banned it.
So we went to the park after school and read Kim's smuggled copy of the Power Rangers magazine and kicked each other in the head there instead.
(This is a metaphor, but it's also literally true. So much kicking in the head.)
God forbid parents actually talk to their teenagers.
i cant stop saying "grisp it"
hey did you know that uhh
i. the monster's body is a cultural body
ii. the monster always escapes
iii. the monster is the harbinger of category crisis
iv. the monster dwells at the gates of difference
v. the monster polices the borders of the possible
vi. fear of the monster is really a kind of desire
vii. the monster stands at the threshold… of becoming
oh shit i didn't expect this to actually get notes lmao
these are all direct quotes from jeffrey jerome cohen's "monster culture (seven theses)" (full pdf linked) i highly encourage you to read it yourself!
that said, while i think cohen's writing is evocative, it can be a little dense, so while i'm here, here's my capsule summary (you can also hear me talk about this in the first episode of my podcast) (listen to @ghostswerepeopletoo)
i. the monster's body is a cultural body - The monster is a work of fiction to be analyzed through tools of literary and sociological theory.
ii. the monster always escapes - As long as the cultural fear from which the monster stems persists, the monster will reappear in retellings, reimaginings, and sequels.
iii. the monster is the harbinger of category crisis - Monsters defy binaries and challenge easy comprehension or categorization.
iv. the monster dwells at the gates of difference - The monster represents the Other.
v. the monster polices the borders of the possible - Tales of the monster exist to discourage unacceptable or taboo behaviors.
vi. fear of the monster is really a kind of desire - Subjects can vicariously participate in the disruption of the social order through the monster.
vii. the monster stands at the threshold… of becoming - Within the monster we find information about the self.
big fan of when jmart goes from

to
jon: what a prick <3 (affectionate) martin: what a moron <333 (affectionate)
theres a lot of jobs i think would be cool to automate but the people being automated out of a job are given no alternatives because this is being done for the employers benefit not the employee. so we're in a weird situation where im lookin at jobs that i really dont think any person should be forced to endure and still having to go "well i guess id rather a human do it than a robot" which kind of sucks major ass actually. why am i on the side of employment. god damn it.
when people point out that "90% of fanfiction is garbage" as though this is something that reflects on fanfiction in particular and not something that is true of literally any kind of content in any medium and genre
its funny to me how warmups for instruments generally sound nice and pretty. like just basic scales or chords. the exercises i do on my guitar could be mistaken for actual music at times.
and then vocal warmups are shit like. bark like a seal. grunt like a thwomp from mario 64. now sing the melody but instead of the lyrics youre saying 'moo moo mee mee mah mah' even the scales you gotta moo mee mah through that shit and its just so goofy every time. and this is why im not a singer
see this is exactly what i mean. i thought someone was having a mental break of some kind in my notes until i remembered what i had posted last night
english major brain: words can evolve and develop as a society goes on. the way a word is used is its definition. it's pointless to hold onto the idea of right vs wrong words human brain: THAT IS NOT WHAT LARP MEANS!!!!!

Hello there. Guess how much money I made last year? $28. I’m an investment banking analyst at a boutique firm, in M&A. I have my undergrad from the University of Chicago, one of the top schools in the country. With bonuses, sometimes I make even more. Are you jealous of that? Most people on Tumblr are usually jobless or they decided to major in the humanities and are poor.
$28?
@the-grand-bamboozler
I want everyone to see this section of a mostly unredacted judgement I’ve been reading. Mostly it’s fine, but occasionally they have to X out a word or a profit margin or something. But then I encountered paragraph of the year.
“word hashtag my word #myword” has done irreversible damage to my vocabulary
I think that you need to have a certain amount of rule breaking attitude to be the first to do something.
I think that my grandmother didn’t become the first woman race car driver because she’s the sort of person who thinks that every time you eat at a dining table you need a full table placement. You can’t just bring a plate and fork to the table you’ve gotta have like tablecloth, placemats, two kinds of knives, the works. Her mind cannot comprehend a universe where you could just eat a sandwich off of a napkin at the table.
So in the same vein she couldn’t conceive of a woman race car driver because there weren’t women race car drivers when she was a kid. She was like “oh it just wasn’t done back then” so she didn’t even try even though that was her dream job.
Anyways I do often wonder how much talent and passion has been lost over the years because there’s a lot of people out there like my grandmother who can’t conceive of things outside of the established norms. If there had been even one person who pushed her to follow her dreams, she probably would’ve been a damn good race car driver but nobody did and she wasn’t.
The thing is, I’m also naturally a rule follower. I can conceive of breaking the rules, but actually breaking them makes me think I’m gonna get in trouble. Or at least that’s how I used to be.
There were people in my life who taught me how to question the rules and assert myself and I had parents who encouraged me to follow my dreams first and think about money second.
I got lucky though. Not everybody has people to teach them how to be bold and not everybody is naturally a rule breaker.
So somebody that wanted to be a race car driver became a housewife because she didn’t know that there were already women race car drivers. And she had a fun and interesting life as a housewife but she didn’t do what she really wanted.
