So I finished the CGI He-Man and the Masters of the Universe not that long ago and I wanted to share my thoughts on it. To go on the record, this is my own personal opinion on the show. If anyone else liked it, that’s just fine.
For starters, I don’t think this is the worst show ever. It’s got decent animation and visuals, the voice acting is okay, it had interesting ideas, and some nice fight scenes. It’s something you can have fun watching if you don’t think too hard about some stuff.
Unfortunately, I tend to do that.
While it’s not a bad show, it’s not that very good either. My main issues with it were the pacing and the writing. Like I said, it’s got some nice concepts, but the execution of them wasn’t the best. It feels like the plot was rushed in a lot of areas and didn’t really give the audience, or the characters for that matter, time to really digest everything before moving onto the next conflict. And some things didn’t really have a whole lot of build up to them.
Also, the dialogue was pretty bad. I understand it’s a kids show, but it feels like they dumbed things down too much. Characters stated the obvious a lot, or said things that were downright ridiculous. While there were some funny moments, the humor was often hit or miss.
And that brings me to how they handled the characters. I don’t really mind the direction the show took with most of them, but the execution wasn’t great. The relationship between the Masters of the Universe and others characters honestly were not fleshed out, and a lot of dynamics weren’t established or developed well. Plus, their character arcs and storylines weren’t that well-written. I think Krass had the most interesting one out of the cast, but I also think it could have been handled better. Again, I like some of the ideas they had for them, but their development, depth, and execution weren’t handled well.
The show does have some enjoyable moments, but I personally don’t consider this the best thing Mattel has done for the franchise. I think it could have been great if it had better writing and more episodes to flesh things out properly. There was quite a lot of potential, I just feel like it was wasted, especially since the show ended on a cliffhanger.
Though, I will say this, I think Skeletor was the best part of the show. I enjoyed how evil and funny he was whenever he was on screen.
