there’s a luxury train in japan that not only costs $7,000 at minimum per 24 hours, but due to its 10-room capacity, is purely lottery-based with a winning percentage of roughly 1%. this is the kinda shit that miles would take his friends out to do on a whim, after pulling a few strings to tweak the odds in his favor.

helen trails off, realizing belatedly that she isn't really sure WHAT miles is to her sister. if she's honest, her first impression is mostly that he's a little weird, but she could say that about any of the shitheads. andi has peculiar taste in company.
‘ ... business partners? ’
a family gathering had been the latest thing andi had persuaded him to attend, a congratulatory dinner thrown together by her parents to celebrate alpha's successful launch. years of broad smiles and firm handshakes had served him well as he was practically rotated through the house's rooms, meeting person after person until they all started to blend together.
eventually, he manages to slip out to the back deck for a spot of fresh air, a minute to recharge his seemingly endless social battery, and finds that he's not alone. andi's sister is perched on one of the chairs, identical to his partner in every way, save for personality. where andi never backed down from a fight, helen looked as though she'd never been in one.
' uh... yeah. ' he gives an almost sheepish smile, unwilling to divulge the more private side of their working relationship. ' you're a... teacher, right? ' fingers snap several times as he thinks, forefinger then pointing at her once his memory kicks in. ' andi talks about you all the time, you know. yeah. had no idea you were twins, though ; she's always going on about her little sister. '

the silence that follows her words is filled, to his relief, by the muted hustle and bustle of the coffee shop's interior. customers stumbling over orders, the rattle and hiss of espresso machines, names being called into the crowd and falling upon deaf ears. it isn't the first time he's seen her quite so morose, and that's why he knows it's serious ; jordan riley might be a great number of things, but emotionally honest is not one of them.
he's vaguely aware of what she's been through. what he didn't learn from the news ( and several personal connections ) she'd eventually recounted to him over several months, once they were sprawled out across a couch or rug, a stiff drink in one hand and a copy of her current script in the other, running lines long forgotten.
lean shoulders bristle anxiously as he shifts in his chair, tapping one forefinger against the cup housing his soy latte. he's never been particularly good at dealing with emotional duress, but as with all things, it doesn't mean he won't give it his all.
' does it have to? ' he replies, in a tone unusually somber for one so carefree. ' sometimes... there is no good reason for something. y'know? sometimes shit just... happens. we can't help how we feel about it. ' several seconds pass before his lips part in a trademark grin, an attempt to lighten her mood. ' be nice, though, wouldn't it? like a light switch for your emotions. '

it isn't like her to be so open. well, no — that's not quite true. on most things, whiskey's an open book, a proverbial fount of opinions she never gets to state until they're alone. it's just not like her to talk, especially disparagingly, about duke. until now, there'd been an unspoken agreement that his name wasn't to be uttered in this apartment, a sacred space for whatever debased desires and frustrations the two needed to work through.
she isn't facing him. the satin sheet is draped lazily over one bronzed shoulder, golden tresses catching the earliest rays of sunlight permeating the gaps in the curtains. brow furrowing, he inches closer until he's pressed up behind her, eyes drawn to the light glinting off the necklace he'd bought her the day before. there might have been a time long ago when he felt guilty for going behind his friend's back, for greeting him with bold - faced lies and an award - winning smile, knowing the small woman beside him had been straddling him the week before.
but that was then and this is now, and he's come too far to ever embrace any remnants of the man he used to be.
' cursed? ' he parrots, lips hovering near her ear. the faint scent of his cologne still lingers, a musky sandalwood and birch. ' here's what i think. i think duke just can't appreciate what you have to offer. i mean, i love the guy, but he's a little tripped out on testosterone. so you're not cursed. you're just stuck with a brick wall for a boyfriend. '

all pretentiousness aside, the two things miles is genuinely passionate and knowledgeable about are music and film, in that order. to have chosen philip glass out of a wide myriad of arguably more (modernly) relevant, prominent composers, especially when his choices for things outside of his areas of expertise are admittedly quite “mainstream” ( i.e., serena williams for fitness, gillian flynn for murder mysteries, etc. ), in my opinion shows a deeper level of appreciation and understanding for the subject.
that being said, his fame and fortune have absolutely twisted his priorities when it comes to said subjects. he played guitar for years before becoming involved with the disruptors, and despite falling wildly out of practice afterwards ( save for the times he’d play for andi ), still recognizes the significance of owning paul mccartney’s guitar — which he promptly and rather unceremoniously drops into the sand, the corruption of endless wealth now a more prominent trait than his love for the music itself.
