I don’t think your still answering asks about 2017/18 newsies fandom but what’s the deal with the aphobia? Did it come from something specific? I’m ace and my biggest thing is headcanoning Davey as ace and i just completely didn’t know about this

I mean, I don't have much more to say about the fandom from back then, but I'll answer an ask or two about it here and there if people are really interested!

Basically, from what I personally saw most of the aphobia in the fandom back then stemmed from misplaced accusations of ableism. Sometimes (but not always) if people said they headcanoned Crutchie as being ace or wrote something where he was ace, a small but vocal group of people in the fandom would say that you shouldn't headcanon Crutchie as ace because it was infantilizing and ableist to disabled people. And then actual a-spec people in the fandom (some of whom were also disabled!) had to step in and be like "um, no, that's not how that works, you're just being aphobic."

Also on a kind of related note, there was also a lot of NSFW blogs run by minors writing stuff about the underage Newsies characters, which is a whole can of worms that I am not interested in getting into, but certain portions of the fandom were a little... hypersexualized, if that makes sense? And I'm not trying to say that the people who ran those blogs were explicitly aphobic or anything, it just felt to me at the time (and I think there were some others who agreed with me) that ace people were being pushed out of the fandom a little bit if we tried to talk or write about our experiences.

I do want to make a point to say, though, that I personally only saw this stuff happen from when I first came on Tumblr in late 2017 to around late 2018/early 2019, and then most of the people who were involved either left or became less vocal. I'm not sure how long it was going on for before I joined, but it died out fairly quickly after I got more involved in the fandom thankfully. I also want to say that those people weren't the majority of people in the fandom at all, they just happened to be annoyingly vocal in the particular corner of the fandom that I was in. I actually was only able to figure out that I was ace because of some amazing, super supportive a-spec people in the fandom at the time, so I really have only good things to say about my experience here so far.

So yeah. Like I said, they all seem to have left from what I can tell, so you go right ahead and headcanon Davey as ace all you want!! I think that's super awesome, and if anyone gives you trouble just send them over here to your resident asexual newsies fandom grandma and I'll soak 'em for ya!

As someone who was here from the very beginning of Newsies 2018 Tumblr and witnessed... pretty much everything that went on (Holocaust AU, 9/11 AU, Beaver Man, etc.), I offer my services for the next few days. If you have a question about some weird shit that went on in 2018, ask away! I will spill the tea, as the youths say (god I hate myself).

Please keep in mind that I didn't bring up old drama for the sake of starting shit or "cancelling" anyone (I hate cancel culture with a burning passion), so please don't take the stuff I've posted out of context or use it to fuel current fandom drama. And please, please don't bug other people who were in or are still in the fandom about this stuff unless they've explicitly said they want to talk about it.

Also! I don't mean to suggest with these posts that I hate the Newsies fandom or regret my time here. I love the fandom! I've met some great friends through it, and overall it's been one of the most positive experiences of my life. Hell, I wouldn't have figured out my sexuality if it weren't for the Newsies fandom and the people in it being open about themselves. There are just a few bits of drama that stick out to me, and I wanted to take a bit of a trip down memory lane (with a side of snark and a dash of nihilism).

Okay then. Back into the void I go, to lurk. If you want to talk to me my DMs are always open, but idk when I'll next post on here. I'm not super into posting these days (not for any bad reason, I just don't really feel like it).

Oh man, you're gonna have to be more specific.

I mean on a serious note there was a lot of blatant aphobia, which was really fun for me to deal with as a closeted ace 15 year old.

On a less serious note, there was that time someone made a whole blog to vague post about someone who they had gotten into an argument with over ships. And then there was the time someone did that at least 13 more times.

There was Juck, who had a blog for a while where he did nothing but respond in gobbles because he was apparently part turkey in addition to having eyes all over his body? Idk man, like I said I think we were all going through something around that time (for the record I have no issue with the person who made Juck, they were super nice and just trying to mess around and people took it too far). If you want to know more I'm happy to tell you, but you can also visit the blog yourself @juckkelly. (The blog is inactive though, so please be kind and don't spam it with asks. Be responsible, people, and treat these things like a museum! A museum of Juck. Huh. That's weird. Anyway. Moving on.)

So I was here for the 2017/2018 Fansie period, but I never interacted with anyone. Please explain the Holocaust AU and/or the 911 AU. (Like, what??)

Ah, yes. The seminal classics (please note the sarcasm).

TW for discussion of the Holocaust and 9/11.

The Holocaust AU was a oneshot someone (who shall remain nameless because I am absolutely not trying to start shit up again and I think they might still be on Tumblr) wrote after seeing a photo of a display at a concentration camp of the mobility aids which were taken from people by the Nazis during the Holocaust.

The basic plot was that Jack was a Romani person (but they didn't use that word, they used the word g***y, which I have censored because it is my understanding that that word is considered a slur by Romani people) and Crutchie was a disabled person who used to have a crutch which had been taken from him (yes I still remember all of this, yes I did read the story back in the day before it was deleted, yes that was a mistake, yes I have seen too much). Jack and Crutchie then fall in love at the camp, but then Jack dies, and that's how it ends.

People understandably got very upset after it was posted, and the person originally was very defensive and refused to take it down (which I really don't understand, I mean dude you posted this incredibly insensitive and awful story to a fandom with a large number of Jewish, queer, and disabled people, what did you think was going to happen?) They did take it down after about a day, though, and posted an apology wherein they claimed that because they're not American they have a different perspective on using the word g***y and so they didn't realize it was offensive until it was too late. They didn't really address the Holocaust aspect of the story in their apology from what I can remember. Then they either deleted their blog or renamed it, I can't remember which.

Now for the 9/11 AU.

Someone (again, they shall remain nameless) went on a school trip to the 9/11 museum and memorial and learned about a man (I don't remember his name off the top of my head but you can probably Google it) who wore a red bandanna everywhere as a lucky charm for most of his life, who then died in one of the Twin Towers. Afterwards, his bandanna was found completely intact amidst the rubble, and he and his story became symbols of hope in the dark times of 9/11.

I think people can probably tell where this is going.

They wrote an AU where Jack was that person, and died in the Twin Towers trying to save one of the other newsies (maybe Crutchie? Or Race? I don't remember who). Unlike the Holocaust AU I never read this story, so I can't give many specifics about the story itself, but I do remember that the person defended themselves by saying that they asked their mom to read it before they posted it and that she thought it was fine. I also don't remember them ever taking it down, so it might actually still be up on the site? You can go looking for it if you want to suffer, I guess, but please don't attack them if it is still up.

On that note, I'm sharing this stuff for posterity, commiseration, and so that people can hear a firsthand account of what happened, not so that people can go looking for the people who wrote these stories and attack them for it almost 3 years later. From what I remember both of the people who wrote these were young teenagers, and while they definitely should have known better, they've also probably (hopefully) matured in the years since and they don't deserve to have their online lives ruined over it yet again. Let's talk about all of this in good faith, and let the past be.

So I already talked about the 9/11 AU in the previous ask, but I will happily talk about Beaver Man (Christ).

Beaver Man was a post (which I will not bring back, @hotcocoanddrawing has already offered to be chaotic and unearth it) where someone jokingly said that 1992 Race looked like a specific photo of a beaver, and posted them side by side to prove it. People thought it was funny and began to post other photos of Newsies who looked like different photos of animals and weird animated characters.

I remember the post got really, really long after a while, so it annoyed the crap out of me having to scroll past it, but that was all. It was perfectly innocent. Then I logged on one afternoon and somehow, things had escalated. I don't know exactly what happened, but people had taken it way too far and were saying it was problematic, ableist (?), homophobic, etc. A lot of the people who first posted about it got sent really nasty anon hate. People began to get legitimately (and understandably) upset when the post crossed their dash because of all the discourse now attached to it, so they asked it to be tagged because it was triggering them (again, understandable, triggers are weird and I'm not hating on anyone for feelings that were out of their control). This, unfortunately, only heightened things, and people began hating on everyone who said they were uncomfortable with or triggered by the post.

Things sort of fizzled out on their own after a week or so of people yelling at each other about this. Beaver Man was one of those weird things (like Juck) which started off as a complete joke and turned into something else so fast that people couldn't even really remember what they were angry about in the first place (again, like Juck. Also Juck and Beaver Man happened right around the same time so clearly the fandom was going through some shit lmao.)

So yeah. That's all I remember. I will say Beaver Man was a lot more confusing to me than Juck and some of the other stuff? I don't know why I just don't remember it as well.

I watched Hamilton a few days ago, and it just... felt different watching it now.

Don't get me wrong, I thought it was great, but it didn't make me feel the same sparks of joy, energy, and excitement that it used to.

I'm sure some of this probably has to do with my age- I was in middle school when it first came out and I fell in love with it and now I'm about to be a Senior in high school so of course I've changed as a person but. Idk. Something about it just fell flat. I would've committed murder to see Hamilton with the original Broadway cast back in 2015/2016, but when I watched it now I just nonchalantly thought "oh, that was nice" and moved on.

Did anyone else feel like that?
