The willful ignorance surrounding what “Sympathy is a Knife” is about is genuinely heart breaking because it’s SO clearly not about Taylor personally. Charli is expressing her insecurity, her self-loathing, and her feelings of inadequacy next to a star with as much power, privilege, and influence as Taylor.
Charli is EXTREMELY clear in the song that these are deeply personal issues she is struggling with and the song never once puts blame on Taylor—it’s about Charli trying to cope with these complicated and deeply upsetting feelings. She’s not saying “I hope your boyfriend breaks up with you so I don’t have to see you anymore lol” she’s saying “I am so uncomfortable with myself in comparison to you that I wish you would break up with this mutual connection so I don’t have to confront these feelings. I hate that I feel this way at all and all this pressure and self loathing I have sometimes makes me feel like offing myself”
Charli is not blaming Taylor (it seems obvious that Sympathy is a Knife is HIGHLY LIKELY to be about Swift, but the way the song is written you can honestly fill in any woman or person you compare yourself to negatively). She’s being incredibly vulnerable about her feelings while also being honest about the ways the industry compares and hurts women.
And I know this to be true because Charli wrote “Girl, So confusing” which examines VERY similar feelings of anxiety and awkwardness surrounding her music industry relationship with Lorde.
Nothing mean was said to Taylor. She was not attacked in any way shape or form.
To which Taylor turned around and said to Charli “you’re a yappy little dog who’s also a coke-head haha”
There is a huge amount of cruelty in Taylor’s song that is honestly extremely concerning and upsetting, and it’s frustrating that people don’t seem to be getting that.
anon, i don’t even have to add anything, you said it all🖤
