That psychic space of observed existence is electrifying for audience and for performer.
Seeing this fellow on the subway last night brought the magic of performance back to the fore.

"Begin by coloring the first title in the list of titles to be colored. The title will be followed by a small letter label (A). Locate and color the part of the illustration to which the title refers. *It is important that you color the titles in the order that they are presented*; they are usually listed that way for specific reasons." “Every author and every editor wants to think of what they’ve published as a gauntlet being thrown down. That’s what I hope this book will be for readers—a gauntlet and perhaps in some ways a series of alternative blueprints. There is much to be done.” (p xi)

"You may be surprised, or perhaps chagrined, to find that this book about art begins with a chapter on physics. This book is actually about the science of vision—the process of receiving and interpreting light from reflected objects—and what it can tell us about how artists achieve various effects." (p12)

“What event in human history could have been so pervasive and immense that it literally changed the sex of God?
“I was familiar with the current, most commonly accepted explanation: just before recorded history began, invading horsemen sweeping down from the north imposed their skygods and virile ethics on the peaceful goddess cultures they vanquished. Somehow, this answer seemed to me inadequate to explain a worldwide social phenomenon that occurred everywhere civilizations emerged and which took a millennium to unfold.
…
“I am aware that numerous other respected explanations have been given for the dramatic events I recount. I could not in this book present accounts of all other historical theories, and chose to focus on the relationship between literacy and patriarchy.
“…I could not restrain myself from trying to rescue a few of my favorite words from what I fear may be their impending extinction due to neglect. Therefore, in the following pages the reader may occasionally sight an unfamiliar member of an endangered species of the English language. I ask the reader’s indulgence.” (pp vii-ix)

“Meanwhile, hundreds of thousands of performances have come and gone, witnessed only by the people in the room, or on the street. And though we can argue about the advantages of ephemerality, this does make for a rather unique situation: performance art has become a field whose practices are largely invisible to itself.
“To respond to this situation, we began with a simple idea: to create an annual periodical allowing the people who made performances in that year to document their work in print. We would not curate these entries based on their genre, their popularity, their location, or their success. All performances were eligible, as long as they identified themselves as performances and were performed in 2011” (p vii)

"The virtual machine idea is itself one of the most elegant in technological history, and is a crucial step in the evolution of ideas about software. To come up with it, scientists and technologists had to recognize that a computer running a program isn't merely a washer doing laundry. A washer is a washer whatever clothes you put inside, but when you put a new program in a computer, it becomes a new machine." (p24)
