Fanfic James and Sirius

(Not saying this applies to every and all fanfics I’ve read just enough that it annoys me and I am not attacking people who do write like this - I am just stating a personal opinion)

(I also love Lily and Remus as characters this is just a comparison as to how they are treated)

James and Sirius are often portrayed as dumb or stupid in almost every fanfic I’ve read. Whereas Lily and Remus are portrayed as really really smart.

Now the proof that Lily is smart is in half-blood prince regarding potions by Slughorn but not much is mentioned on her intellect other than a throwaway line about her wand being good for charms. Yet she is portrayed as another Hermione.

Remus is never mentioned to be intelligent in any specific way, as far as I can remember. I mean of course he is, this is shown repetitively through; getting the DADA job, him being a very good teacher and obviously his contribution to the MM. Yet he is also portrayed as another Hermione.

I’m not saying they are not smart, but their main trait shown in the books is a higher level of maturity compared to James and Sirius . I feel people have taken that maturity to mean high intelligence and James and Sirius’ immaturity to mean high stupidity.

Now let’s discuss the proof in the books of James and Sirius’ high intelligence.

1. “Cleverest students in the school” - Remus Lupin PoA

While it can be that Remus had an idealised view of them because of his close friendship, he would not have made such a comment if James and Sirius had been getting consistently lower marks than him or Lily. So it can be implied that academically they were better of than he was.

2. Animagi and Werewolves

It is said in the book that it took James and Sirius the best part of 3 years to figure out how to become animagi, and that they succeeded in their 5th year. Which means that they;

A) could have figured out as early as 2nd year that Remus was a werewolf when they would have hardly covered them (seeing as Harry only learnt about them in 3rd year)

B) Become animagi from the ages of 12-15. And in PoA it is described as an extremely difficult and dangerous thing to do and the ministry keeps an eye on people attempting it. Adults struggle with this and yet they managed it while underage.

3. “[both] Exceptionally bright” - Professor McGonagall PoA

Professor McGonagall is often identified as very honest and often speaks her mind. It is highly doubtful that she would exaggerate the intelligence of her past students.

An argument could be made if it was just James, seeing how people often do exaggerate the achievement of dead loved ones. However, considering at this point in the book she believed Sirius be a treacherous death eater I have no doubt that this was not an exaggeration.

4. Marauder’s Map

As previously mentioned Remus did contribute and I am not saying this is the brainchild of only James and Sirius, however every time the map is mentioned by Remus in PoA, he uses terminology such as ‘we’ or ‘I helped write it’. This coupled with him calling James and Sirius the “cleverest” implies they had a large role in its development as well.

(And Peter to some extent, but to be fair it is mentioned specifically that he is not smart - “Peter needed all the help he could get from James and Sirius” and the HBP in Snape’s pensive memory when the Marauders are discussing their OWLs)

I suppose what annoys me is a lot of fanfics/fanon depictions show the MM as a majorly Remus Lupin invention, when not even he does.

5. Sirius escaping Azkaban/getting into Hogwarts

I mean it’s mentioned he was one of the highest security prisoners. Sirius himself identifies that he was “weak” at the time. And while they didn’t know he was an animagi it is still mentioned that dementors could sense him and believed when he was an animal that he was just losing his mind.

Hogwarts is described as the “safest place in the wizarding world” (paraphrased) and yet a “mass murderer” was able to sneak in. Again they didn’t know he was an animagi but still a feat.

There is probably more but that all I can think of off the top of my head.

I’m not saying that the opposite should happen in fanfic/fanon but I’m saying their should be less of an imbalance in the way intelligence is shown in Lily and Remus in comparison to James and Sirius especially when there is more canon evidence of James and Sirius’ intelligence.

I know tumblr is a land of shippers, but something I desperately want from Ted Lasso is to see Rebecca happy on her own. Right now she is *still* wrapped up in conquering Rupert and defining herself in terms of him, and I want to see her move past that without having to replace him with another man in her life. It’s tropey that a woman is not complete without a man (and similarly tropey that a relationship with a woman improves a man, which some Rebecca pairings may lead to), and I want so badly to see her complete on her own. I want her to find self satisfaction. Can we have that please?

It’s for openly saying Dean’s death is a success story while owning a mental health campaign.

It’s for openly comparing a deaf character to a demon.

It’s for openly hurting and replacing your fandom by saying, among other things, the new project is the “passion project” that “has your entire heart” and “hopefully lasts longer than Supernatural.”

It’s for reading about children who got ripped away from their parents and were forced into cages at international borders - and deciding to produce a copaganda show from the POV of the law enforcement agents out of empathy, because “let’s be honest, the issues are not in law enforcement.”

I don’t support Jared because of Jared and nothing else!

That doesn’t mean I attack him or fans. It simply means I unfollowed and I don’t want to have anything to do with him or future projects anymore.

Why You Shouldn’t Exclude Peter Pettigrew from the Marauders:

First of all, he was a beloved member of the Marauders

He wasn’t secretly hated by James, Remus, or Sirius

Or even Lily

And he loved them too

That’s what makes his betrayal so powerful and impactful

Good people can become bad

Good people, brave people, can be ruled by fear

He became an illegal animagus for Remus

NOT for ulterior motives

He was trusted enough by Dumbledore (i hate dumbledore but that’s a different story) 

He ALSO became a death eater because he was AFRAID

And fear can make even the brave and loyal betray 

By excluding him

And making him this unloveable, unlikeable character

You’re taking away the power of his actions

So STOP

Wormtail does not deserve slander during Marauder era fics UNTIL after his betrayal. Hot take, I know.

Sirius’ “Prank” on Snape

Here are my thoughts on the so-called “prank”

(I am not saying Sirius was not wrong for telling Snape how to get into the Shrieking Shack. He was, it betrayed Lupins’ trust, but this is my view on the whole issue.)

My analysis focussing on these issues

1) Snape already had a theory that Lupin was most definitely a werewolf. He was probably as sure as Hermione was in her 3rd year.

2) Sirius only told Snape how to get past the WW. Not that he should.

In bold is my evidence

““Severus was very interested in where I went every month.” Lupin told Harry, Ron, and Hermione” - Remus Lupin PoA

Implies that Snape already had a suspicion that Lupin was a werewolf, BEFORE Sirius told him how to get past the WW.

This is further backed up by

““They sneak out at night. There’s something wrong with that Lupin. Where does he keep going?”

“He’s ill,”said Lily. “They say he’s ill —”

“Every month at the full moon?” Said Snape.

“I know your theory,” said Lily and she sounded cold.” - Lily and Snape DH.

While this conversation happened AFTER the prank, it is clear that Snape has presented his theory of Lupin being a werewolf countless times, enough that Lily is sick of it, and knows it. Therefore Snape definitely already had a theory based on the Luna cycle that Lupin was a werewolf BEFORE the prank.

“Snape had seen me crossing the grounds with madame Pomfrey one evening as she led me towards the WW to transform.

Sirius thought it would be - er - amusing, to tell Snape all he had to do was prod the knot in the tree trunk and he’d be able to get in after me.” - Remus Lupin PoA

How? Just how did Sirius manage to get to Snape the moment after he saw Lupin crossing the grounds. Because the two events happen on the same night.

My theory (and this is not backed up by facts) is that Snape told Sirius he knew Lupin was a werewolf and that he goes to the WW to transform every full moon and Snape had just seen him. And Sirius just told him how to get into the WW if he was so sure. Because how else would that conversation arrive naturally. But this has nothing to do with explicit canon so it is not part of my analysis.

What is canon is that Sirius only told Snape how to get past the WW and into the SS. He never, at least mentioned in canon, told Snape to go and do it.

This is not a prank, it is merely one student telling another student how to get into a place where they BOTH know a dangerous werewolf is.

Snape knew that Lupin was a werewolf, Snape knew that it was a full moon, and Snape knew that if he entered the SS he would most likely be attacked.

“Sirius Black showed he was capable of murder at the age of sixteen.” - Severus Snape PoA

They learn about werewolves in 3rd year, this is someone who had already passed his OWLs. Snape almost certainly knows how dangerous werewolves are when fully transformed.

Let me ask a question here:

If there is a room that has a password protected lock on it. And inside the room there is a dangerous, aggravated bear that will kill. Person A and B both know that to walk into that room would almost certainly cause death.

Person A has the code, and Person B, keeps badgering them about the bear. Person A gives person B the code. Person B, knowing that there is almost definitely a bear that will try to kill them behind that door attempts to enter anyway, but only gets far enough to put in the code, before they are stopped by Person A’s friend who decided to check and see if Person B was actually stupid enough to try and get through the door.

Would you call this a prank? Malicious? No. It is certainly irresponsible of Person A, but it is ultimately Person B’s choice to put themselves in that position that they know is dangerous. And Person A had no control over the fact Person B tried to enter the room.

Hopefully this makes sense I wrote it in 5 minutes

Fanfic Lily Evans Annoys Me

(I am not saying this applies to everything I've read and I am not attacking people who do write/like her - this is just my personal opinion)

1 ) In A LOT of fanfics Lily is presented as a prime example of the "I'm not like other girls," meme. It's gotten to the point where I cannot stand reading stories from her point of view.

She has a right to her own opinion on James' actions and to show that she wasn't interested,  BUT they make it seem like Lily is a special snowflake and that she's the only girl with a separate opinion over every single other girl.

I have read many fainting and squealing lines - that Lily is the only one who isn't a 'dumb blonde type' which promotes a really annoying image about girls in general. That woman who form their own opinion and are different are the exception not the rule.

YOU CAN MAKE AN UNIQUE, STRONG, FEMALE CHARACTER WITHOUT PUTTING EVERY OTHER GIRL IN THE STORY DOWN TO A DUMB SHEEP. 

Example - while the other girls would be fainting over James Potter - It just annoyed me.

Alternative - "James Potter's consistent badgering was frustrating, I had told him many times that I was not interested. I'm sure he could find someone who was actually interested in him if just he tried."

2 ) There is a certain air of superiority and entitlement surrounding her characterisation. MANY fanfics make her super super smart and James and Sirius very very dumb.

In the books they were immature and pranksters, but in fanfics James and Sirius are portrayed as dumb. IMMATURE DOES NOT EQUAL STUPID!!! Lily is made out as this all-knowing character when in canon she's not.  In PoA, there are many examples of the intelligence of the Marauders, in particular James and Sirius.

- Remus saying that James and Sirius were the cleverest students in the school.

- Becoming animagi in 5th year, supposedly it took them the best part of three years - so that means they could have started as early as 2nd year, if they transformed in early 5th year.

- Figuring out Remus was a werewolf - again possibility of 2nd/3rd year, which they'd only have covered basics (or not even)

- THE MARAUDER'S MAP!!!

- Sirius escaping Azkaban and evading capture.

Despite all this they are presented as rather stupid in most fanfics. I'm not saying the opposite should happen, I'm saying that there should be less of a superiority element to conversations.

Example - James and Sirius not understanding something Lily or Remus say - constantly.

Alternative - James, Sirius, Lily and Remus all contributing to the conversation and showing off unique areas of knowledge expertise in different discussions.

3 ) In many fanfics there is also a concerning element to Lily's behaviour, she's very controlling and 'powerful'.  She is constantly shown to be putting James and Sirius down out loud or in her thoughts.

And while yes, In canon she does call James an 'arrogant toe-rag' that is to her best friend when discussing James' unwanted advances and the only other time she's shown insulting him is when he is publicly humiliating said best friend. She seems to only do it when it is realistic to do so and as a defence mechanism, in order to vent her feelings or try and get James to stop.

While I believe that occasionally they would warrant a hex or jinx thrown in their direction as retaliation to the pranks they pull, many of the situations Lily threatens this they are not doing anything wrong, or merely joking around with each other.

Example - screaming at the Marauder's, threatening to hex them if they aren't respectful, disagree with or if the come near her. *cough abusive behaviour cough*

Alternative - not having Lily win every altercation by threatening violence in the form of a hex or jinx and let them have a more balanced relationship.

*Ginny Weasley is another example of this.
