The lost girl had spent a few days wandering on foot. She had no car– never really learned how to drive, anyway– and her phone battery was staggering low despite hardly using it. She only picked it up to ignore her older brother’s calls, and maybe used it as a source of light if she was trekking through a dark area. But this wasn’t an unusual situation for Kaya. No matter what she was doing or who she was with, she never felt like she belonged. Instead, she fit better as an outcast, or a true vagabond, hitching rides on the backs of freight trains until she was in a different state.
This was so different from the lives of her peers. She’d gone to school at the best academy for supernatural arts possible, and even her brother, who was a far worse slacker than her, ended up doing better. She even accumulated some money from an old family inheritance. But none of that would ever change the fact that she felt like she didn’t belong anywhere. And that, she accepted, was just the curse of being half-vampire and half-human in a werewolf clan. Well, she was no longer in that clan… but she was outcast when she was in it anyway.
She saw a grand mansion in the distance, furrowing her brows. It was so far away from civilization… She couldn’t help but wonder who owned it. For a second, she wracked her brain about who from school might have lived in this area… Any names? Nothing came up. She approached the house carefully, only as a means to explore whether or not she could stay there for the night. But when she saw light, she knew she had to retreat. Except, it was too late– someone had noticed her there, and demanded her presence.
Hesitantly, she came slightly forth from the large tree she hid behind, her face half-hidden by the shadow and half-illuminated by the bright white moon. She said nothing, and only furrowed her brows when she saw the man.
After a few moments went by and he didn’t hear some sort of snarky reply from his little brother, Sirius sat up with an annoyed sigh, for a split-second he thought he had just imagined the presence. Then, as he looked over and saw that there was a girl facing him, he stood up quickly from the bench, completely alert. “Who are you?” Was his first question. At first, he thought it may have been one of his parents clients, but the somewhat guilty look on her face told him that she was in a place that she shouldn’t be.
There was something about her that was peculiar. Sirius knew she had to be something supernatural, his parents protective charms didn’t let any human cross into their land unless authorized. He would have heard about it if there was supposed to be a human roaming around the manor, as it wasn’t a common occurrence. Sirius wasn’t frightened of the girl at all, but he couldn’t be certain that she wasn’t a complete threat.
Yet, the more he took in her features, the more he let his guard down. She looked as though she had been travelling for a long time, the exhaustion in her body language was apparent. To Sirius’s best guess, she came here looking for a place to sleep in shelter. Either that, or she wanted to speak with his parents for some manner of protection if she was truly running from something. This seemed less likely, as she would have gone through the front doors and if they had decided to help her, Sirius wouldn’t have seen her at all in the back garden.
The flames from his fingertips slowly extinguished, leaving only a fume of smoke. He was well aware she must have already seen him playing with magic. To a non-human, it wouldn’t come as much of a shock. Still, Sirius didn’t see much reason in attempting to threaten the girl, if she wanted to have hurt him, she would have done it already.
