He barked out a short laugh, the sound rich with amusement as he watched her fake sincerity. He picked up his glass and mirrored her sip, slower, smoother, letting the liquor settle before speaking again.

“Oh, absolutely.” Damon deadpanned, eyes flicking toward the plaque with a theatrical sort of reverence. “The wolves.” He clicked his tongue. “God, I lie awake at night thinking about them. Their tiny, furry faces.” 

Leaning back against the bar again, he tilted his head as he clearly settled in now that he wasn’t footing the bill. “But hey, don’t knock the buffet. Sometimes it's the only upside. Even when they make us play nice and pretend the humans are here for more than just ambience.” His tone dipped a little darker on that last part, a quiet honesty bleeding through the sarcasm. There was something predatory flickering beneath the surface, but it was muted for now.

He brought his drink back up and gestured to her with it. “So what’s your angle? You’ve got the wit, the charm, the fake philanthropy down. But you strike me as more than Klaus’ little errand girl.”

"It's just so sad, the way this town persecutes wolves. They're just so cute, it's undeserved really."

She gives a solemn nod, a very obviously fake look of sadness across her face. Her eyes scanned across the room, picking out the few humans of importance that Klaus actually wanted something from and the ones that were just there as 'place-holders'—so to speak. "Mm, true. But only when one can actually sample the buffet. And as far as I'm aware, I can't do that until the parties actually over."

Honestly, she'd hoped the party would be winding down by now—most donations had been collected and even the silent auction was done. Yet still, people were insistent on mingling around with each other.

"My angle?" Her eyes slide over towards him, tipping her head as she watched him. "Whose to say I'm really not here for the charity?"

She gives a small shake of her head, a soft laugh falling from her lips. "You might be surprised to hear I enjoy being 'an errand girl'. But if you want honesty? Then you're bound to be disappointed. Tonight, I really am just here because Klaus asked."

"If I had it my way? I would quite literally be anywhere else. Out of all the errands I'm asked to do, this is my least favourite kind."

“Well, I didn’t exactly plan on getting invited.” He said, eyes scanning the room with visible boredom. “But Klaus and I… we share a few common interests. Feeding on humans being one of them.” He glanced sideways at her, a flicker of something sharper in his gaze. “Though judging by this guest list, tonight’s buffet is more stale than satisfying.”

He shifted his weight, leaning one elbow casually on the bar. “Truth is, I only showed up because I was bored. And because ignoring Klaus’s invite usually comes with an impressive string of death threats and dramatic speeches I don’t have the energy for.”

His gaze drifted back to her, lingering now with a renewed spark of interest. “But now you’re buying my drinks.” He added with a smug little grin, raising his glass in a mock toast. “Which means you’ve got my attention.”

He tipped his head toward her, curiosity flickering just behind the sarcasm. “So what about you, sweetheart? You working the room for Klaus, or just pretending to care about some fake charity like the rest of these blood bags?”

"Hm—I suppose that might be reason enough to invite you. It's a whole buffet in here."

Abigail flagged down the bartender for herself, turning fully towards Damon while she waited for him to come back. "You're not entirely wrong there, though I suppose this is just as boring as anything else. Not exactly my type of event. It's almost a testament as to how boring this town can be, that a party is this bland."

She gave him a shrug, turning towards the bartender for a moment to order her own drink and telling him that Damon's drinks were on her from here on out. "What an honor. The attention of Damon Salvatore."

A wide grin slid onto her face, and she tipped her head in the direction of the large plaque sitting up on the newly made stage that'd been prepared just for this event.

"Oh, the charity, obviously. I mean—I just care so deeply about..." Her eyes slid towards the plaque, skimming over it. "The endangered wolves of Mystic Falls. It's a cause that just really—" She lifts a hand to wipe a fake tear from her eye. "Means so much to me."

She turned her eyes back towards him, picking up her drink that was placed down in front of her and taking a large sip. "And I'm sure it means so much to you too. Otherwise you wouldn't be here, right?"

"You certainly wouldn't come just for the chance at a large scale buffet."
