“I’m called little Undergrad”
The marvelous Kat Feller sings about life as a junior researcher. From “An Evening of Hilbert and Sullivan”
More PhD Pinafore ;)
“A physics grad has a cunning mind”
Another video from my May 6, 2016 concert “An Evening with Hilbert and Sullivan.” A brief treatise on the qualities of an ideal graduate student, “A physics grad has a cunning mind” is based off “A British Tar is a souring soul” from Gilbert and Sullivan’s “HMS Pinafore.” More videos will be forthcoming as they are processed and I have time. Do read the lyrics as there are one or two flubs.
PhD Pinafore?

(…I’m so, so sorry. Once I got going, I couldn’t stop.)
Thinking about this some more, Ruddigourd totally sounds like it would be a version of Ruddigore where the Murgatroyd ancestors are represented by a collection of jack-o’-lanterns that suddenly flare up and start singing in the ghost scene.
Go radish, get you hence, to your cabin with celery. This is the consequence of ill-advised asparagus!
#THIS IS THE CORNSEQUENCE OF DILL-ENDIVED ASPARAGUS Ahaha!
#is there an underground G&S tumblr community? Yes, there is! We’re small but enthusiastic. (See @fuckyeahgilbertandsullivan)
Hello, yes, you rang?

dick deadeye: you probably like deadpool
cousin hebe: you saw a version of the show that didnt cut her dialogue.
sir joseph: you’re sir joseph

Obscure nerd problems: when it’s February 29th and you wait all day for an opportunity to make a Pirates of Penzance joke but the perfect setup never arrives and now you won’t have the opportunity again for four more years. (At least, not for that particular class of Pirates of Penzance jokes.)
But I guess it could be worse; I could be apprenticed to the Pirate King until I’m eighty-four.
if G & S operettas were episodes in a TV series, Princess Ida would be the one everyone pretends doesn’t exist.
okay but by this logic
trial by jury is the short, weird pilot where none of the characters are quite right but it’s amazing anyway
the sorcerer is the first episode after they got funding and it’s charming but there are plot holes big enough to drive a bus through, and nobody has really settled into their characters. once again, great.
by pinafore, everybody has settled in.
pirates is by far the silliest episode, and it’s one that people are fairly divided on, but more people like it than don’t
patience is the one that feels like it’s trying to be silly-serious but people take it as serious
by iolanthe it begins to get serious. same-gender pairings begin to develop in the fandom.
everybody pretends ida doesn’t exist, but it’s not actually an episode: it’s a weirdly-long, out-of-character straight-to-dvd film. it has some charm but really it’s just outdated, strange and sexist. (coughFLORIANcough.) either way, it isn’t really canon because of how unpopular and downright wordy it is.
the mikado is the episode that everybody has seen. literally everybody. it parodies animé tropes.
by ruddigore, the serious undertones are beginning to become more strong, but it still ends in a silly way because that’s the formula.
yeomen is generally regarded as the strongest episode. it’s got the best plot, the characters are so great, and the ending is miserable. unfortunate, the network don’t like it so much.
by gondoliers, they’re back to formula but they aren’t happy about it. it feels strained, and everybody knows it’s strained.
utopia is the beach episode, basically. people tend to pretend it didn’t happen because it’s weird and has no bearing on the plot, and it introduces some new characters.
you know they’ve been introducing one-episode characters on top of the main cast? well, they all make a reappearance for the grand duke, which is the season (and, indeed, whole-show) finale. it’s obviously over, but it goes out with a bang. everybody is sad, and it’s actually one of the best episodes because the writers were really trying.
It occurs to me that, if the Major-General’s daughters had not approached the seaside when they did, the Pirates would have become much more effective at piracy.
Because without the maidens, Frederick would have married his nursemaid, and the Pirates would have been… Ruthless.

A pair of socks, a pair of socks, a most ingenious pair of socks! AHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! A pair. Of. Socks.
