You Ever Felt This Creative?
Have you ever felt so creative that you have no idea what to create? No? You sure? Ok I’m alone. But for those of you out there that have ever felt like this just know that you aren’t alone. For anyone wondering what in the heck I’m talking about; well here it is. There are times that I feel inspired and creative. I feel like there something inside me that needs to get out. Something that is begging to be said in any way possible. It can be anything. It can be everything. It’s that feeling that you know there is something that everyone needs to see, hear, feel, and know. The question is how do you share it? If you’re like me then at the height of this chaos in your mind you lose track of what it is that you want to say. You can’t pin down the right thoughts. Your mind races in circles with the futility of a dog chasing its tail. Still with me? Good… It’s those moments that hold the greatest potential. Somewhere in you there is greatness. So how do you let it out? Simple, you start moving with it. You ever watch a fan spin? I have. I’m odd, I know…I’m working on it. Anyway, if you’ve ever watched a fan spin then you know that it moves so fast that the blades melt together and you lose sight of their individuality, much like the thoughts spinning through your head. But, if you start moving your eyes just right, in time with the blades they begin to break off and be individuals again. The same thing goes with your thoughts. If you begin to flow with them, get yourself in sync, the individual thoughts will become clear. Find what works for you. Find your flow. Don’t just sit here and try to be creative. Move. Get out of your element. Grab a sketch pad and let the pencil move without forcing it. Grab your MacBook Pro, open up Photoshop and just begin to throw stuff in there. Start writing something, anything. Start doing whatever it is you do without being concerned with the outcome. What you come up with may be terrible but that’s not the point. The point is to do it and start moving in sync with your racing thoughts. Then you’ll find what it is you’ve been dying to say. And then, you’ll say it.

Exhibition Tuesday!
Thinking about taking a summer trip? If you visit Storm King Art Center, you’ll see some familiar Arts & Design artists. For example, Alyson Shotz created Nautical Charts; Fathom Points + Compass Bearings for the Smith-9th Street station and Mirror Fence, which is on view at Storm King. In addition, Roy Lichtenstein’s Times Square Mural at the Times Square-42nd Street station carries the same pop art imagery as Storm King’s Mermaid. Artist Dennis Oppenheim created the low relief sculpture, Rising and Setting at the MNR Riverdale station as well as the similarly colored, Architectural Cactus #6. Finally, Sol LeWitt’s Whirls and twirls (MTA), at the 59th Street-Columbus Circle station shows LeWitt’s later introduction of color when compared to his earlier sculpture of Five Modular Units, part of the Storm King permanent collection.
In his series called ‘Combo Photos’, photographer and creative director at BBDO Atlanta Stephen McMennamy takes unrelated photos and fuses them together to produce an unexpected situations.
