Dear American friends,

There is so many posts about Donald J. Trump and the election going on right now that I’m sure this post will be lost in the noise. Or, because social media is basically an echo chamber, you’ll only see this if you agree with me already.

A lot of Americans are envious of Canada right now. We have Justin Trudeau as Prime Minister and, especially compared to what’s going on south of the border, it seems pretty great. But, just a few months ago, we were in the same place as you.

We had a leader who wanted people to vote for him by leveraging our bigotry and fear. He wanted to ban Muslim refugees (and only accept Christians). He wanted to setup a “tip-line” so that you could report on your neighbours and their foreign “barbaric cultural practices”. He even passed a law that gave him the power to strip (mostly non-white) children of their citizenship.

We avoided that divisive future because we elected a leader who had this message: A Canadian is a Canadian is a Canadian is a Canadian. It doesn’t matter if you’re black or white, gay or straight, trans or CIS, Christian or Muslim, or left leaning or right leaning. We are all Canadian and we are all in this together.

That message is one Americans need to hear right now. An American is an American is an American is an American. It doesn’t matter if you’re a Black American or White American, a gay American or straight American, trans or cis American, Christian American or Muslim American, or an American who voted for Clinton or an American who voted for Trump.

You’re all in this together.

That doesn’t mean stop fighting for what you believe in or not to speak out to wrongs that you see. But just because someone isn’t the same race, religion, gender, sexuality, or voted the same as you - doesn’t make them your enemy. You may be feeling scared, afraid, or furious right now. But, believe it or not, there are scared, afraid, and furious people on both sides.

And, let’s be honest, no matter who you voted for you probably voted by picking who you felt was the lesser of two evils instead of the best of all possible choices. When you have a system that makes it easy for Americans to despise fellow Americans, that’s what you end up with. Maybe this is your moment to make something better.

They only “love”, “respect” and “protect” these groups as long as they’re compliant, as long as they’re in agreement with the tenants of social justice, if they ever deviate from the group, they become a target.

You people don’t care about women. You don’t care about black people. You don’t care about Muslims, trans or gay people. You care about your political allies and your ideology, that’s all.
